Former Championship Wrestling from Florida star Bobby Wales, real name Robert Smellie, passed away on 12/26 in his native Jamaica, PWInsider.com is sad to report.
Wales was born in Jamaica, but moved to Florida when he was a child. He was broken into the business by Tyree Pride and was a regular on Championship Wrestling in Florida TV, teaming with Pride as The Carribean Connection and working with names like Lex Luger, Kevin Sullivan, Chris Champion, The Cuban Assassin and The Great Muta. Later, Wales teamed with Norman Smiley early on in Smiley's career for a number of promotions.
Billed as "The Jamaican Jammer", Wales also promoted pro wrestling in Florida and later in Jamaica under the Caribbean Wrestling Entertainment (CWE) banner, which Wales stated he was running to give back to his local community in Scott’s Hall, St Mary, where he lived. Wales had a hand in training a number of talents and in recent years, we are told Wales was involved in running a gym in Jamaica. He was been working on booking a big show in Jamaica for Easter 2025 with a Jamaica vs. U.S. theme.
Bob Cook remembered Wales, writing, "I'm sad to hear the passing of Robert Smellie, who wrestled as Bobby Wales back when I knew him best. Had the honor of sharing the ring with Bobby several times for Championship Wrestling from Florida as well as part of the Global Wrestling Alliance TV tapings in Miami in 1987. Thank you for being part of the best times of my life, always treating me with respect then and our many interactions on Facebook since those days. I send my sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace Bobby."
PWInsider.com sends our deepest sympathies the family, friends and fans of Bobby Wales.
