Lucha legend Rey Misterio Sr., the uncle of WWE's Rey Mysterio and great-Uncle of Dominik Mysterio, passed away this morning, it was has been announced.

Born Miguel Ángel López Díaz, Misterio originally planned to train as a boxer but shifted over to professional wrestling,  He debuted in 1976 and worked for every lucha group you can think of, but when Lucha Libre AAA was formed, he shifted there in 1992.  As a trainer, Misterio helped break Psicosis, Konnan, Halloween, Damien 666, Cassandro, Extreme Tiger, Venum Black and scores of other stars, including obviously his nephew, who originally wrestling as Colibri, but was soon bestowed the name Rey Mysterio Jr. and took it to worldwide acclaim.

While obviously his nephew would become far better known Stateside, Misterio did make some appearances beyond Mexico.  He worked for WCW at their Pat O'Connor Memorial Cup tournament, teaming with Konnan to represent Mexico.  The team advanced to the second round, defeating UK reps Norman Smiley and Chris Adams before losing to Rick and Scott Steiner.  He worked for FMW in Japan.

In 2006, Misterio starred in the horror film Wrestlemaniac, where he played a crazed former wrestler who was now a murderer.

Misterio last wrestled full-time in 2009 but still made appearances.  His last bout is believed to have been 2023 on an independent event in California.
