ROH Episode 90 Review: Red Velvet Brings the Heat

Another Thursday means another ROH Review. Similar to last week, we had a lot of tag team matches, three champions appeared, and still no Final Battle announcement! Well, let’s review what ROH gave us in this week's episode.

Gates of Agony (Bishop Kaun and Toa Liona) vs Dark Order (Alex Reynolds and John Silver) vs Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake and Zack Gibson) vs Undisputed Kingdom (Mike Bennett and Matt Taven):

I feel like I went back in time, to the ROH, which did pointless four-corner survival matches for no reason. This was fine, a tad rushed, but a good showing from all four teams to kick off the show.

Winners: Undisputed Kingdom (Mike Bennett and Matt Taven)

Dustin Rhodes and Sammy Guevara vs Shot Through The Heart:

This match did not matter until the end. Guevara got the win and The Righteous came out and attacked Rhodes and Guevara. Dutch had a cowbell around his neck as he threatened to hit Rhodes with it, I think we can all see where this is going in the next couple of weeks.

Winners: Dustin Rhodes and Sammy Guevara

Griff Garrison and Preston Vance vs Waves and Curls:

So many tag team matches within the first 25 minutes of this episode.

Winners: Griff Garrison and Preston Vance

Aaron Solo vs Katsuyori Shibata:

I do love that they seem to want to push Solo by putting him in big matches, but since he always loses it never goes anywhere. Shibata has also racked up a couple of wins in ROH-sanctioned matches, and wonders if he gets some sort of championship match at Final Battle.

Winner: Katsuyori Shibata

Josh Woods vs Komander:

For all of the cool vignettes that ROH did to build up Varsity Athletes, I still do not understand why they lose every single match they are in. Mark Sterling and Alex Abrahentes got involved halfway through the match as they both took bumps for each other. Komander was able to take advantage and get the win, looks like someone is finally on a winning streak.

Winner: Komander

Viva Van vs Abadon:

I am convinced that somehow Van is on some type of AEW/ROH deal because of her being featured on ROH more frequently. This was a fun match, and Abadon got the big win!

Winner: Abadon

Emergency MEM:

Nair says she thinks Starkz is ready to apologize to Athena for everything that has happened the last couple of weeks. Athena makes fun of Starkz's outfit as she and Nair talk about different countries she can travel to. Leila Grey interrupts and challenges Athena to a match. Athena says this is the perfect opportunity to showcase her talents before her world tour. Athena accepts her challenge for a Proving Grounds Match next week.

This week's match from the ROH Vault was Hyan vs Athena in a Proving Grounds Match for the ROH Women’s Championship from March of 2023.

The Righteous (Vincent and Dutch) vs Matt Raymond Sammy Diaz:

Another tag team squash… After the match, Vincent says that you have to force the hand in ROH to get what you want in life and that is what he and Dutch are going to do. He says they should have been the ROH Tag Team Champions long ago, and everyone knows it. Dutch plays into the cowbell and says Dustin dreamed of it being handed down to him, except it wasn’t. He says Dusty Rhodes saw a lot more in Dutch than he ever did Dustin Rhodes.

Winners: The Righteous (Vincent and Dutch)

ROH Women’s Television Championship Street Fight: Red Velvet vs Diamante:

One of the things I love is that all of the bigger ROH matches always happen in front of the Dynamite crowd to make it seem like a bigger deal. Unfortunately, the crowd was quiet for the majority of this match but these two brought it. Lots of weapons were used from ladders, chairs, kendo sticks, and more. Velvet has become a lot more comfortable in the ring and this match proved it!

Winner: “And Still” Red Velvet

Overall:

I am still confused as to why there has been so much tag team wrestling as of late in ROH. Part of me wants to blame it on lazy booking, but that may not be the entire case here. I am also starting to worry since we are a month out from the projected Final Battle date and there is still no announcement. Oh well, in dues time I guess.
