It is Wednesday and AEW Dynamite is in the Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, CT. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Nigel McGuinness, and Tony Schiavone.
Christian Cage and Adam Page vs Jay White and Juice Robinson
Any time they use Christina and don’t have him cut a promo is a waste. The dude is GOLD on the mic anymore.
White and Page start with grappling in the ring, nice basic stuff. Cage tags himself in once Page is able to take down White. They also have Page tag out as soon as Juice tags in. After Juice had been taken down, then Page tags in to work him over. When Juice is knocked to the floor, Nick Wayne goes to attack Juice, but Hook attacks him out of the crowd, allowing Juice to take out Cage on the floor.
When we gate White and Page again in the match, they move to more striking than grappling White gets a big flurry and then we go to Page and Juice, which, given their characters, should be a lot more insane with craziness and big moves. White gets to hit a big series of finishing moves and then as Juice rolls up Page, Mother Wayne distracts the ref so we see Juice hold the pin for over a five count. Kip Sabian then nails Juice with the contract case so that Page can get the deadeye for the pin and the win.
Winners: Christian Cage and Adam Page
A decent TV match to get more heat on the heels going into the PPV.
Renee Paquette, rocking the Canadian Tuxedo, meets Mercedes Mone and Kamille, and Mone denies that they tried to hit Kris Statlander, instead it’s that Kamille can’t drive. Mone then berates Kamille for dropping her jacket. When Mone sees Statlander, she bails and leaves Kamille to get beat up and speared through a wall.
Tony Schiavone welcomes Will Ospreay to the ring and Will calls out Kyle Fletcher, who obliges him. Kyle says that if anything happens to him, the Don Callis Family will not be far behind. Will says he has been in Callis Family meetings. And tells Kyle to empty his pockets. Kyle gives him a screwdriver. Will talks about how he helped Kyle during the pandemic and he brought him into AEW.
Kyle says it’s not a surprise that Will wants to take credit for someone else’s success, and he asks why Will did everything for him? He did it for himself and wanted to mold Kyle into a Will Ospreay clone. He says Will is a selfish hypocrite. Will admits he stabbed Okada and Omega in the back, but he was a multi time champion and multi time tournament winner, and asks Kyle what he has done. Not Aussie Open, but Kyle himself.
Will says he’s done sod all. Kyle says he will outdo everything Will has ever done and he will prove it at Full Gear. Will says Kyle wants his five minutes of fame, so Will takes that match. Will talked about how the Tiger Driver Kyle hit him with, he has taken feeling in his hand from him, and he will take Kyle’s future from him.
Kyle says he’s not coming for a piece, he’s coming for everything. Brian Cage and Lance Archer show to stand beside Kyle, so Will calls for his friends, Powerhouse Hobbs and Mark Davis and all six men brawl into the back. As Archer is heading to the back, Roderick Strong attacks him and they brawl to the back.
Roderick Strong vs Lance Archer in a fall count anywhere match.
They start with picture in picture and then when we come back to full screen, they are brawling in the crowd to the ringside area. Brian Cage joins in the fight and this brings out Matt Taven and Mike Bennett. Cage, Taven and Bennett brawl to the back and it’s back to Archer and Roddy. Roddy gets a leaping knee for the pin and the win.
Winner and winning his three matches in a row for a match with MJF: Roderick Strong
Roddy says at Full Gear, he will finish MJF. Roddy is then attacked by Konosuke Takeshita, but Adam Cole saunters to the ring for the save. The ref calls for the bell:
Adam Page vs Konosuke Takeshita.
Page knocks Takeshita from the ring so he can do his entrance. Because that’s what the crowd wants. After the commercial break, these guys are just throwing bombs at each other. Cole starts to close the deal and Takeshita puts on the Dynamite Ring from MJF and nails Cole.
Cole is pinned and has to start all over to get three wins in a row.
Winner: Konosuke Takeshita
We see MJF in his undisclosed location laughing.
Roderick attacks Takeshita, but Takeshita takes him out. Kyle O’Reilly runs to the ring to save Roddy. Takeshita starts to celebrate on the stage and Ricochet attacks HIM. In the ring, Cole goes to shake Kyle’s hand, but Kyle leaves the ring instead.
Before the commercial break, the Jon Moxley truck shows up for his TBS Takeover.
Renee is with MVP, Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin. MVP says Bobby is the biggest force in pro wrestling and in two weeks, he may end Swerve Strickland’s career. Bobby says he will hurt Swerve.
In the arena, the Death Riders beat down JD Drake with a chair. Mox hits the ring with a mic and says he has been thinking about Orange Cassidy. He says Chuck Taylor is eating through a straw because Cassidy couldn’t save him. Yuta is with Mox because Cassidy couldn’t save him. Now, Mox has to make an example of Cassidy at Full Gear.
Mox talks about the pain he will mete out at Full Gear, and Orange Cassidy comes to the stage. Mark Briscoe and Rocky Romero join him. Cassidy says he believes Mox will do what he says he will do because he holds the world title. He says that they could fight everyone, but he can only win the title by wrestling, and when they wrestled, Cassidy won. He will beat Mox at Full Gear and take the power back.
Cassidy then says he needs to take out a couple of Mox’s pawns, so next week, he will wrestle Wheeler Yuta. Mox says he will see if Cassidy has the guts to pull the trigger on someone he thought was a friend, and Mox’s message is Abandon all hope.
Mox then leaves, not much of a takeover. I was hoping he’d do some big stuff for TBS like bringing back Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, The Chimp Channel, and Starcade. NOT THAT ONE, the one that was a game show for people playing video games from 1983.
Darby Allin leaps from the crowd and attacks Mox. They fight to the back as the Death Riders load up in the truck and take off.
Renee asks Chris Jericho if he accepts Tomohiro Ishii’s challenge. Large William gives a zen statement and Jericho mocks Ishii. Jericho accepts the match.
Britt Baker vs Penelope Ford
Ford dominates before the commercial break and the announcers put over that Baker may not be completely recovered from her illness. I did like that Ford attacks Baker when she was doing the “DMD” hand signs, as I always find those things silly. As I watch this match, it really feels like they want to move Ford up the card, and Baker isn’t getting a lot.
Baker puts on the lockjaw glove, but Ford attacks from behind and gets a Muta lock. Baker reverses it and gets the lockjaw for the win.
Winner: Britt Baker
An odd match with Baker being the underdog the whole match and pulling out a surprise win. After the match, Serena Deeb comes to the stage to jack jaws at Baker.
Renee is with Mina Shirakawa, and Mina says she is here for a champagne celebration. Harley Cameron shows up, drinks the champagne and says Mira is the Harley Cameron of Japan. Harley then challenges Mina, makes a comment about her chest and they have a chest shake off as we go to the ring.
Swerve Strickland w/Prince Nana vs Lio Rush
OK, Lio Rush’s jacket is….something. A puffy coat with puffy spikes or horns or…holy cats, where would you even find a thing like that?
They start with a LOT of high-flying moves and big leaps. Lio starts working as a heel by going after Swerve’s eyes when they fight on the floor. Rush slams into the ropes to knock Swerve off the top to the floor as we go to commercial. The announcers say Rush is trying to capture the attention of MVP by going hard after Swerve.
When we come back from picture in picture, Swerve starts to take over and gets in a lot of his big moves. They then go back to Rush working over Swerve using heel tactics, including a hand on the ropes when rolling up Swerve for two. Swerve is finally able to get Big Pressure for the pin and the win.
Winner: Swerve Strickland
Swerve grabs a mic and says a lot of people are trying to make their careers off of his name. He then says he can’t wait to fight with Bobby Lashley and he needs to come to the ring tonight.
MVP and Bobby show up in suits. MVP says he wants to fight with a member of the Syndicate, just ask and they’ll set it up. He says they want him as a member because he has so much untapped potential, but he needs to be taught lessons. Bobby takes off his jacket and as MVP talks, Shelton Benjamin attacks Swerve from behind.
Shelton feeds Swerve to Lashley who beats him down at ringside. Shelton traps Nana in the corner and Bobby puts Swerve in the ring. Lashley takes out Swerve with the full nelson. Bobby then takes out Nana.
Renee is with Jaime Hayter. Hayter says she will continue to do what she said she was going to do. For right now, she wants one thing.
The screen goes dark and we get another vignette with Julia Hart and she hears Brody say it’s time to come home on the phone. Things get surreal and she says it’s time to wake up.
Private Party show to watch the match from the stage.
Kings of the Black Throne (Malakai Black and Brody King) vs FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler)
This is gonna be a hard hitting match and they take no time in starting the throw hands. Black and Dax have a great sequence as they go back and forth in the ring. These two work so well together, I love it every time I see it. After the commercial break, Black gets taken down by FTR and King hits the ring and cleans house.
FTR are finally able to wear down King for a two count, but King and Black are able to double-team Dax to take control again. I like that instead of just King getting beat down because it needed to happen for the match, FTR breaks him down by attacking over and over to get him down in a way that doesn’t make King seem any less of a monster.
FTR blocks Dante’s Inferno and hits the Shatter Machine. King lands on his stomach so they have to turn him over and he gets time to recover enough to kick out. FTR hits Black with a spike piledriver on the apron, but King dives onto FTR. We even hear Private Party say “They got me on that one.” King is able to grab a sleeper on Dax in the middle of the ring and Dax goes out.
Winners and moving on to the Four Way: Kings of the Black Throne.
Everyone shakes hands and we are out of time!
