ROH Episode 87 Review: A Forever Championship Celebration
We now live in a world where Chris Jericho is our ROH World Champion once again. Now I do not believe we will be seeing him on Honor Club any time soon, we still had an episode of ROH with minimal champs, but a huge Minion Celebration! Let’s review.
Gates of Agony (Bishop Kaun and Toa Liona) vs The Infantry (Carlie Bravo and Shawn Dean):
Infantry can’t seem to get back on the winning train, which makes me believe that they will be turning heel sooner rather than later. This was fun, Gates of Agony can put on good matches when they are not in there with local enhancement talent and Infantry is always a fun team to watch.
Winners: Gates of Agony (Bishop Kaun and Toa Liona)
Reyna Isis vs Viva Van:
Interestingly, both women got entrance trons and theme songs, which makes me believe we will see them more often on ROH programming. I was shocked Van did not get the win here since it seemed they were building her up for a while. This match however got a lot of time and was a good showcase of women's wrestling.
Winner: Reyna Isis
Leyla Hirsch Promo:
Hirsch says the last two months have been rough because of the separated shoulder she suffered in her Death Before Dishonor match. She says that she is going to regain all the momentum she once had and become a champion within ROH.
Rocky Romero vs Brandon Cutler:
Cutler says that he sees Romero everywhere and he thinks he may know Lucha Libre, but he knows more than Romero from learning about Lucha Libre in California. Cutler says that since they are in his ring he has to shake his hand and adhere to the Code of Honor, which Romero does and then kicks him in the face. Romero was also accompanied to the ring by the Stockton Kings mascot Dunkson, who has previous problems with Cutler. Romero got the win quickly as he and Dunkson celebrated.
Winner: Rocky Romero
Lee Johnson and EJ Nduka vs Bret Hankins and Jiah Jewell:
30 minutes to get to our first squash match…
Winners: Lee Johnson and EJ Nduka
Athena’s Celebration:
Before the celebration started they showed the full match between Athena and Mercedes Martinez from two years ago when Athena won the title. Athena and Lexy Nair had matching shirts saying Forever ROH Champ and Minion Besie as Starkz introduced them to the party. The confetti cannons scared Athena and the dance team was not to Athena’s liking so she kicked them out of the ring. Athena says this was supposed to be her day and her mom thought her major surgery was more important than her celebration. She calls out the Women’s Division for not showing up and says they are not grateful for Athena. She says without her there would be no ROH as she says she is not content and she wants more. She says she is not overrated and she is underappreciated and asks for her flowers for not being pinned or submitted for over two years. Athena blames Starkz for the party being bad and says she is jealous of all of Athena’s success. She said on her best day Starkz could not accomplish a tenth of what Athena had accomplished, Starkz pushed her screamed she was done, and walked out of the ring. Nair reassured her and surprised her with a custom spinner belt with Athena’s face on it. Abandon’s music plays as Nair runs for cover Abadon makes Nair disappear and she is now chained to Athena. Abadon takes Athena out and shoves the cake in her face.
ROH TV Championship: Brian Cage vs Komander:
Very happy that Cage made his way to ROH only a week and a half after winning the TV title, small victories here. After the excitement with the Minion Celebration, I would have rather seen that end the episode, especially since there was some storyline stuff going on there than this match, but who am I? This match was fine, a tad long at times but it did what it had to do.
Winner: “And Still” Brian Cage
Overall:
Besides the Minion Celebration, this was your average episode of ROH. Only two of our champions showed up and we had minimal storyline movement with anything besides the ROH Women’s Title scene. At least we only had one squash match this week.
