From the ring to the big screen: WWE stars who became Hollywood icons

The transition from professional wrestling to the world of Hollywood is a journey that only a few WWE stars have successfully navigated. Wrestlers are known for their athleticism, charisma, and ability to perform on a grand stage, but making the leap from the ring to the silver screen requires much more than just physical prowess. Just as entertainment platforms like Laimz online casino have captivated enthusiasts, WWE stars have transitioned from the ring to the big screen, proving that versatility in performance is key to long-term success. Throughout the years, figures such as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and John Cena have demonstrated that WWE superstars possess the ability to evolve into prominent actors, captivating global audiences and establishing themselves as household names across both realms. This article delves deeper into the journeys of some of the most successful wrestlers who have ascended to the status of Hollywood icons.

1. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson - the people's champion and Hollywood's leading man

Undoubtedly, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is the most successful WWE star who has made it big in Hollywood. From the squared circle to the silver screen, his transition has been nothing short of phenomenal. Born into a wrestling dynasty, Johnson made his WWE debut in 1996, and in no time at all, a boiler-maker with electrifying charisma made the audience cheer with his catchphrases and great wrestling inside the ring.

He was able to amass so much support during his wrestling days that he got the nickname "The People's Champion." His promos were always energetic, the great feuds with other WWE legends, like "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, were really something to behold.

But The Rock's ambitions extended beyond those ropes. In the early 2000s, he made his most significant push into acting to date with a role in The Mummy Returns, in which he played the Scorpion King. The box office success of the movie begat a prequel, entitled The Scorpion King, which was the first to star Johnson. Though his initial performances as an actor were somewhat mixed, it wasn't long before his charisma and hard work gained him acknowledgment in Hollywood.

By the 2010s, The Rock was among the highest-paid and sought-after actors in the business, headlining blockbuster franchises such as Fast & Furious, Jumanji, and Moana. He's pulled off a seamless transition from action to comedy and family films, making him quite versatile and bankable. Today, appeal for Johnson crosses borders, and his journey from WWE to Hollywood is an inspirational story for many aspiring athletes and actors.

2. John Cena - from WWE’s champ to comedy gold

While Dwayne Johnson was breaking into Hollywood, another WWE titan carved his niche silently in the acting world - John Cena. With his never-say-die spirit and his signature phrase, "You Can't See Me," Cena has become one of the biggest stars in WWE during the 2000s and 2010s. He was a huge role model to younger fans with his clean-cut image and strong performances inside the ring; he was the face of the company for much of his wrestling career.

Cena's crossover to the big screen was usually action-oriented, as in the films The Marine released in 2006 and 12 Rounds in 2009. But it wasn't until he started embracing comedy roles that he would find his true groove in Hollywood. Seriously, his performance in Trainwreck alongside Amy Schumer in 2015 opened up a whole new level of Cena-one wherein he proved that he had impeccable comedic timing and isn't above making fun of himself.

With the success of Trainwreck, Cena continued to land more prominent roles in comedies like the 2017 film Daddy's Home 2 and 2018's Blockers. He even showed he could take on more dramatic action roles in such films as 2018's Bumblebee and this year's latest entry in the Fast & Furious franchise, F9. In 2022, he played Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad-a role that further expanded his acting capabilities.

That he's able to use this transition from action to comedy has earned Cena a modicum of respect from Hollywood, but much like The Rock, Cena has built a rather successful second career outside the confines of the wrestling ring. With his natural charm, great work ethic, andyes-risk-taking ability, he has managed to show people that he is indeed more than just a wrestler-he's an actor with a significant following.

3. Dave Bautista - the unexpected star

While Dwayne Johnson and John Cena are indeed household names, the rise of Dave Bautista to Hollywood stardom is unique and equally impressive. Bautista, who competed under the ring name Batista, rose in the WWE world during the early 2000s. His towering size, strength, and intensity quickly gained him a fan base and many championships in his wrestling heyday.

After retiring from WWE, Bautista set his sights on acting, beginning with small roles in films such as The Man with the Iron Fists (2012) and Riddick (2013). But it was his role as Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) that really brought him into the spotlight. His depiction of the literal-minded, vengeance-driven warrior captivated both audiences and critics, leading him to reprise the role in several subsequent Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
Unlike Johnson and Cena, who embraced their charismatic and comedic personas, Bautista has revealed a more serious facet in his acting selections. He has appeared in highly praised films like Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and Dune (2021), earning recognition for his strong dramatic performances. Bautista's acting career is still going strong, and he has expressed a desire to take on more complex roles in the future, showing that his talent goes far beyond his wrestling days.
