ROH Episode 84 Review: “Welcome Back Home Champ”

After nearly two months, the ROH Champion returned to the show he was champion on. Why did it take this long you may ask? Who knows, but what I do know is two ROH Champions are wrestling on the AEW pay-per-view next week. So, let’s celebrate our champion's return with this week’s ROH Review.

ROH Six-Man Championship Proving Grounds Match: Dustin Rhodes and The Von Erichs (Marshall and Ron Von Erich) vs Mark Sterling, Ari Davari, and Tony Nese:

Before the match started, Sterling said that Mark had to be in it to get a proving grounds match. Davari and Nese promised that Sterling wouldn’t get touched. They did an Athletes' Rule handshake before the match started. This match was fine. Sterling tried to pay off Rhodes so he would not hit him, but sadly, that did not work. The Texas boys won in a fun opening match.

Winners: “And Still” Dustin Rhodes and The Von Erichs (Marshall and Ron Von Erich)

Nyla Rose vs Katie Arquette:

First squash in 10 minutes typical ROH…

Winner: Nyla Rose

Emergency MEM:

Lexy Nair says that she and Starkz are trying to plan a celebration for Athena being the longest reigning ROH Champion. Nair says that everyone has to be in attendance including the entire women’s division and the board of directors. As Starkz is moping around, Athena yells at her and tells her she should be happy, but she understands that Starkz is jealous. Starkz says that Athena is the problem and she is never there for her. Athena says that there have been times that Starkz has not been there and she does not want to fight today. She said you can be there for the celebration or she can stay home. Starkz says fine and walks away as Nair runs after her. Abandon was lurking behind as she says that the children are always causing problems.

Beef and Anthony Henry vs Anthony Catena and Wes Barkley:

Well, at least they admit they are finally related…

Winners: Beef and Anthony Henry

The Infantry (Carlie Bravo and Shawn Dean) vs The Outrunners (Turbo Floyd and Truth Magnum):

Storyline wise this match does not make any sense. The last time we saw both of these teams they were friends and on the same side, and now they are just having a match for friendly competition? Sadly I am not surprised we have seen weirder things on this programming. After seeing these teams feud forever their matches are all the same. Outrunners won this one as they shook hands and The Infantry walked out. Maybe Infantry is turning towards the other way?

Winners: The Outrunners (Turbo Floyd and Truth Magnum)

Beef and Anthony Henry Promo:

Beef wants to film a tag team promo with Henry since they are now 3-0. Henry says they are not a tag team and his tag team is with JD Drake with the Workhorsemen. Beef annoys Henry by asking for Drake’s number and he refuses to give it to him and storms off.

They aired Samoa Joe vs Kenta Kobashi with Riccaboni and Coleman doing the commentary voice-over. I was four years old when this match aired (sorry for making you feel old again Mike Johnson), so this was cool to see.

ROH Championship: Mark Briscoe vs Matt Taven:

That’s right folks the ROH Champion has come back to ROH! It’s a miracle. This match was more of a safety net to give Briscoe momentum heading into next week and since Taven has been a staple to ROH, why not? You can tell by this point the crowd was dead as I am assuming this was the last thing they filmed after Dynamite last night, but they tried. Mark won with the Jay Driller to send the Pittsburgh crowd home happy. Taven, Bennett, and Briscoe all celebrated to close out the show.

Winner: “And Still” Mark Briscoe

Overall:

If not for the Kobashi vs Joe match, this whole episode would have probably been 45 minutes. Sadly next week Jericho is going to win the ROH Title and we will never see our ROH Champion on Honor Club again, so sad days for ROH ahead. Other than that we have the same problems we do every week. Barely any champs, short matches, and only one storyline developing. Sad days for ROH fans, until next week.
