SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL STATES NEW AEW-WBD DEAL COULD BE WORTH MORE THAN EXPECTED, WBD RETAINING PIECE OF COMPANY

By Mike Johnson on 2024-10-02 16:43:00

Sports Business Journal is reporting that as part of their new deal with AEW, Warner Bros. Discovery is retaining their stake in the company.  While it has never been publicly confirmed by either side that WBD owns a percentage, AEW owner Tony Khan has never outright denied it either, instead citing he would never let anyone have voting power over him in the company.

The SBJ report also notes, "Both AEW and WBD declined to share the financial details behind the deal.  However, sources say it is a three-year deal with an option for a fourth year. The deal is estimated to be valued at $170M annually including the rights fee and other elements"

Note: We are told a version of the SBJ story that cited the deal as "170M total" was an error.

Tony Khan commented, "“We're expanding the partnership in such an exciting way that means so much to me. We've always planned for this to happen this way, everything has come together so perfectly.”

Thanks to Oliver Taylor, as always.
