Thoughts on the rumored AEW TV deal?
If Tony Khan actually gets $170M a year for three years, guaranteed, it’s a huge win for the company, especially given their ratings decline. I can’t confirm the number though. But to me, if they get a pay bump at all it’s a win given how much their audience has dropped over the last few years. Now, if the PPVs streaming on Max end up being part of the deal, then I really hope that they get the $170M number because that is a significant chunk of revenue to give up.
Both CM Punk and The Rock used to hate HHH with a passion. Now, Punk and HHH talk glowingly about each other, with Punk even desiring a creative and training role with NXT post in-ring career. Similarly, The Rock consistently praises HHH and suggests they are close friends even! Is this just typical “go along to get along” stuff because they are co-workers? Or, did HHH turn former enemies into real allies?
I think it’s fair to say that all three men have matured with age. Years ago, they were rivals in a cutthroat business. Now? They have much different roles and interactions but more than anything, I think it’s simply growth.
We see all the complaints about the cost of going to live WWE events such as the upcoming Survivor Series in Vancouver where ticket prices are literally the cost of a month's rent for many people. I know it's "supply and demand" but in a post-pandemic economy, I just don't understand the justification of it. It seems like we are inching closer to a time where pro wrestling and sports and entertainment in general will no longer be those events where people can easily bring their families to. Only the ultra-wealthy can easily afford to go to these big events. Am I being unreasonable here?
You make a valid point. Spending $1500 for a ticket to a wrestling show is stiff. I personally would never do it. It’s just not worth it to me, especially when I can watch the show on Peacock. Supply and demand works both ways. If there comes a time when there is less demand, they will have too much supply and will have to act accordingly.
Most fans assume when someone wins a title, they are not going to lose it in their 1st title defense. Moreover, outside of the WWE’s Women’s Tag Team Championships, most champions can expect at least a 3 to 4 month title reign in WWE. How do you keep new champions interesting early in their reigns if they are unlikely to lose the strap and predictably defend their belts?
It depends on the champion. If it’s someone new with a Title that they are trying to build, they can give them tough matches early (like Gunther getting a rub from Randy Orton). If it’s a former champion getting the Title back, they can go with placeholders at first. No matter what, it’s all in how the story is being told.
On the most recent Raw (Sept. 16), Damien Priest and Rhea Ripley were again outnumbered and beaten down by The Judgment Day. This has become a weekly event since Priest and Ripley were kicked out of the group. At what point do they become fools for falling prey to the same stunt week after week?
To me, they are at the part of the story where they want revenge so they will walk into the den of the dragon. I am OK with it for now.
