The Mox/Danielson plastic bag spot was followed immediately by the Hangman/Swerve needle/chair shot angle. Don’t each of those somehow lesson the impact of the other?
To fans like me, absolutely. It’s too much and when you almost kill someone on a show, that should be the end of the evening to me. But to Tony Khan, it’s like he has no attention span and constantly needs things to go 100 miles an hour, all the time. That is one of the main reasons AEW is so bad to me.
What’s the payoff here? We have two instances of attempted murder, one set up by textbook arson. A simple 1-2-3 doesn’t seem to cut it in terms of a blowoff to these feuds. It would be like if Predator ended with Arnold tweaking the Predator’s nose Karate Kid II style after he’s killed all of the other heroes.
Yep. And it was made worse by the fact that Bryan didn’t even go for revenge against Moxley on last week’s Dynamite. Bryan should want to kill Mox. Instead, he will fight Nigel? WTF sense does that make? None!
The WB Discovery deal is still not inked. If you’re them, do you reconsider finalizing that agreement knowing that content would stream on your mass market consumer service?
To me, it comes down to what the cost of the deal is. If AEW wants double what they are getting now? I let them walk. If they will accept a modest increase then I sign them to a new deal. Dynamite is not what it was but it’s still dependable programming on Wednesdays and decent on Saturdays.
I understand you don't have any specific insight into the mind of Tony Khan, but something has been bothering me. Do you think that Tony has any concept of the optics of recent storylines? He has a southern white man whose gimmick used to include a noose, coming to a black man's "house" and burning it down in the middle of the night. Does he understand the historical aspects of that scenario? Even if we ignore the snuff film those 2 created on Sunday, that's a bad look. Then he has one of his biggest stars emulating and quoting a skinhead movie character. Granted the movie is over 30 years old, but enough people got the reference within hours.
No, I don’t think he has any idea about the optics. I don’t think he cares either. I think he is still booking the E Fed that he sent out to his friends for all of the years that he did before he started AEW. I don’t know him but I do know enough of his booking to know that he is really, really bad at it.
Where do you take it from there? Has TK given up on considering sponsor's opinions about wrestling in general and his little clown show in particular?
The more I see his booking, the more I don’t think that he cares about that. I think he loves booking pro wrestling and owning the company and that is his top priority. I have seen him do a lot of things that make the company less appealing to people outside of his bubble. It doesn’t see that he has the same priorities that TKO does with WWE.
