MAJOR MATCH ANNOUNCED FOR AEW GRAND SLAM IN NYC

By Mike Johnson on 2024-09-11 21:40:00

AEW Champion Bryan Danielson vs. Nigel McGuinness has been announced for the 9/25 AEW Grand Slam event in NYC.

This will be the first time the former Ring of Honor Champions and long-time rivals will wrestle since The September 26, 2009 ROH Final Countdown event at New York City's Manhattan Center, a bout that was designed to be each of their ROH exits as they were slated to go to WWE.

Danielson was hired.  McGuinness was not.

Danielson went on to headline Wrestlemania 30, become one of the most popular talents in the company and across several runs there, won the WWE title before migrating to AEW in 2022..

McGuinness wasn't hired by WWE after he was honest about past injuries and they, at the time, refused to hire him without McGuinness getting a surgery he couldn't afford to get at the time.  He instead signed with TNA as Desmond Wolfe and paused his career after a bout with Hepatitus B.  McGuinness chose to pull himself from performing and returned to ROH, performing the role of Commisioner and color commentator.  He was finally hired by WWE, as an announcer but was released in 2022 after a five year run.  He signed with AEW in 2023 and returned to the ring for the first time in many years at AEW All In: London.

Now, McGuinness gets his dream match, one more bout against Danielson, the 38th time they will have shared a ring with each other and their 12th singles match total - a day short of the 15th anniversary of their last battle.
