Hi guys, I was just watching SmackDown and I have a few conclusions/questions that I'd love your thoughts on.
1) WWE has SO MANY OVER STARS!! In 2021/early 2022 there was virtually no star power left, now everybody feels huge. Am I crazy?
No, you are not crazy at all. WWE does have a plethora of over talent and it’s not by accident. The creative team has worked diligently to get talents over. They have showed us who the characters are and what their motivations are. Then, they put them in storylines that play off of who the talent is. They have done an amazing job of creative since Paul Levesque took over and the bad booker that was Vince McMahon was sent out to pasture.
2) The crowd reaction to Owens, Andrade vs. Melo, and DIY vs. The Street Profits was insane. For a long time, Jim Cornette has said WWE fans only care about the promos and the matches mean nothing. There was a time I agreed. Now? The fans are with the matches more than they have been in maybe decades. Wow!
I have said for decades now that to a good chunk of the wrestling fan base that the actual matches are the least important part of the show to them. They care more about the characters, stories and promos. That doesn’t mean that they don’t like the actual matches, they just want to have a reason to be invested in them. With as good as creative is now in WWE, that is what we are seeing during bouts. Marketing to them will make you wealthy. Marketing to the people who only care about watch the fake fight will make you AEW.
3) Should Tegan Nox join The Way to feud with other trios in the company?
I honestly can’t say either way. It depends on what Creative sees in her. I don’t know that answer.
Two part question.
1) Did Tony Khan make the right call taking a year off from running Wembley Stadium next year?
I think he did. Right now he’s at a little more than half of the crowd that he did there last year. If we look at what happened with Arthur Ashe in New York and apply it to Wembley, if he doesn’t fix his awful creative process he would probably be looking at 25,000 there next year and that would be an epic fail in a building that big. It’s sad that Tony calls himself a student of the business and even with WWE doing everything right creatively, as stated above, he can’t see that his horrible booking is the number one thing that’s holding his company back.
2) Did he make the right call in running a large baseball stadium instead?
That is to be determined. If he draws 10,000? It’s an epic fail. If he draws 20,000? It’s a wash. If he sells it out, he made a great call. Again, fixing the putrid creative could go a long way to getting the larger crowd. The question is will he look in the mirror and see his main problem looking back at him. I don’t expect that he will.
