Dennis Brent, who had a long run working behind the scenes of many professional wrestling companies, including WCW and the WWF passed away earlier this week following a long battle with MS, PWInsider.com is sad to report.
Brent entered the pro wrestling world in a pretty unique way. He was the President of Breeze/QSD (known as PowerSoft) and wrote and published software for the Tandy Corporation, which in turn sold the content through Radio Shack stores. He struck up a friendship with the late Percy Pringle (Paul Bearer), who was in charge of getting the World Class Championship Wrestling program produced. Brent had learned the early version of Desktop Publishing via the early Macintosh computers got involved. This led to those programs as well as a physical mail newsletter covering the business around the country being sold, keeping kayfabe but covering the business.
In 1989, Brent was hired by Turner Broadcasting and worked for WCW until 1994, where he handled press request, oversaw the WCW 900 Hotline and was the ringside photographer for the promotion, regularly getting mentioned on their programming.
From 1998 to 2004, Brent worked for the WWF, carrying a number of different hats. Most famously, he co-wrote the Steve Austin memoir The Stone Cold Truth as well a Jim Ross' cookbooks, while also editing and assisting with other WWF books in that time period. Brent oversaw WWF publications at the time, including Raw magazine. From 2002 -2004, Brent was WWF's Director of Talent Relations, traveling to the WWF developmental territories and would scout, hire (and if needed) fire developmental talents, working closesly with Jim Ross. Even after his diagnosis of MS, Brent remained a consultant to WWE for some time.
Ross paid tribute to Brent on Twitter, writing:
So sad that my 40 year friend Dennis Brent has passed away. We worked together at WCW and WWE.
