There's no denying gambling is a fantastic way to have fun and create a little bit of excitement after a busy day entertaining the kids at home, or putting up with endless demands from your boss at work. Whatever your daily schedule, kicking back and playing a game or two is always a great way to unwind. Yet, for such a common hobby, did you know there are still some really pervasive myths that surround gambling that many people still believe?

Let's take a look at five gambling myths you should never believe.

Myth 1: You Can Outsmart the House

One of the most persistent gambling myths is that you can develop some sort of crazy system or strategy to consistently beat the casino. While some games like poker involve skill, we have news for you: the house edge is always in favor of the casino in a vast amount of games at both regular and high limit casinos where you can play with and for a lot of money. No matter how much you stake on a game, the odds remain the same. Slot machines, roulette, and blackjack, for example, are based on random chance, and no system can reliably predict the outcome.

Myth 2: Lucky Charms and Rituals Can Increase Your Chances of Winning

You might have heard grandpa going off (again) about how his lucky rabbit's foot got him the prized ham at the village meat raffle back in the day, but the truth of the matter is, lucky charms, rituals, or superstitions will not improve your chances of winning anything. Okay, so these beliefs may provide comfort or a sense of control, that's all well and good, but they have no impact on the outcome of a game. It is random chance that determines the results, not lucky objects or actions. Nothing wrong with having them, just don't expect them to work for you. Sorry.

Myth 3: Past Results Predict Future Outcomes

Many gamblers believe that if a coin has landed on heads several times in a row, it's more likely to land on tails next. This is known as the gambler's fallacy. Each spin of a slot machine, roll of the dice, or flip of a coin is an independent event. The outcome of previous events has no influence on future results.

Myth 4: Chasing Losses Will Lead to a Win

No, no, no, no, no. This is one myth that no one has any excuse to believe. Yet, when experiencing a losing streak, some gamblers are tempted to bet more money to recoup their losses. This is a very dangerous approach that can lead to you losing more than you can afford to. So, stick to your limits and don't chase any of your losses.

Myth 5: Gambling is a Quick Way to Get Rich

While, admittedly, it's very possible to win big in gambling, it's also very important to remember that it's primarily a game of chance. The odds in favor of the house, and most people end up losing money in the long run. So just don't go treating it as a source of income.

There's still a lot of prevailing myths to get into, so we've broken it down into traditional, aka bricks-and-mortar casinos and online casinos.

Traditional Casino Myths

The traditional casino model comes with its fair share of mystery and superstition, and it's where many of the continuous myths we still have today were formed. One of the most persistent myths is that casinos are rigged. While it's true that casinos have a mathematical advantage (that's what's known as the house edge, which we were talking about earlier) this doesn't mean players can't win. Random Number Generators (RNGs) ensure fair play for all.

Another common belief is that a slot machine is due for a payout after a bit of a slump or dry spell. Nope, you see, each spin is independent, and past results really don't influence future outcomes. Similarly, myths about casinos pumping oxygen or using pheromones to influence players are totally unfounded. And roulette wheels, for example, are complex mechanisms, making it impossible for dealers to manipulate outcomes.

Finally, there's this idea that remains in which a busy casino offers better chances of winning. It is, of course, false. While more people playing might lead to more payouts overall, individual chances remain unchanged. Again, remember, casino games are primarily games of chance, though some strategies can be applied in certain games.

And What About Online Casinos?

Online casinos have their own set of myths and misconceptions. One common belief is that online slots are rigged. This is false. Just like their brick-and-mortar counterparts, online slots use Random Number Generators (RNGs) to ensure fair play. Another myth is that certain betting systems can guarantee wins. Again, this is false: no strategy can overcome the house edge.

Many players believe that past results can predict future outcomes. However, each spin or hand is independent, meaning previous wins or losses have no impact on the next. It's also a common misconception that online casinos don't pay out real money, that's yet another falsehood. Reputable, licensed online casinos are committed to fair payouts.
