8/7 NJPW G1 CLIMAX RESULTS

By James Kurokawa on 2024-08-08 00:20:00

From Korakuen Hall, Tokyo Japan:

It is a packed house in Korakuen Hall.

1 -  TAKA Michinoku and SANADA vs. Callum Newman and Great-O-Khan

Newman hits a Dreamcast and an Oscutter on TAKA and gets the pinfall win.

2 -  Tomoaki Honma and Shota Umino vs. Gabe Kidd and Jake Lee

Kidd pins Honma after a rebound lariat.

Jake Lee and Shota Umino fight after the match.  They will meet tomorrow in the Budokan Hall.

Gabe Kidd and Jake Lee look like a good team for Bullet Club War Dogs.  They should be perfect for World Tag League later this year.

3 -  Tetsuya Naito and Shingo Takagi vs. Dick Togo and EVIL

Naito traps Togo in a Pluma Blanca.  Togo taps out.

G1 Climax 34 Matches:

4 - Boltin Oleg vs. Jeff Cobb

Solid match.  Both men used their power, and they were exhausted within minutes.  Cobb went for the Aloha Maker, but Oleg reversed into a Kamikaze.  Cobb kicked out.   Cobb hit a lariat and a Tour of the Islands.

Cobb pins Oleg

Jeff Cobb has 10 points and takes the lead in B Block.

Boltin Oleg has 4 points.  Oleg is mathematically eliminated from the B Block.

5 - El Phantasmo vs. Konosuke Takeshita

Great match.  Takeshita hit a Blue Thunder Bomb.  ELP hit a Thunderkiss 86.  Takeshita goes for a Poisonrana but ELP counters and hits one of his own.  ELP hits a CR2.  Takeshita kicks out.   Crowd is popping for both men.  ELP goes for Sudden Death but Takeshita rolls to the floor.  ELP goes to the floor and hits a Sudden Death.  ELP pulls Takeshita to the apron and tries to powerbomb him through a table on the floor.   Takeshita reverses and hits a Bastard Driver on ELP through the table.   Takeshita immediately grasps at his knee and rolls in the ring.   ELP's back is bleeding after the table bump.   ELP beats the count back.

Takeshita hits a roaring elbow.  ELP hits Sudden Death.  Both men are exhausted.   They trade elbows.  Crowd chants for ELP.   They trade reversals.  ELP goes for a Victory Roll, but Takeshita hits  a Wheelbarrow German suplex.  Takeshita hits a Lariat.   Two count.  Takeshita hits a Power Drive Knee.   ELP kicks out.  Wow!

Takeshita hits Raging Fire.    Takeshita pins ELP.

Konosuke Takeshita has 8 points.

El Phantasmo has 4 points and is mathematically eliminated.

There is something about Korakuen Hall that forces wrestlers to give their best to the audience, even in an undercard match.

Massive chant for ELP after the match.

6 - Yota Tsuji vs. HENARE

Stiff match.  Tsuji with a lariat and a Falcon Arrow.  Tsuji with a curb stomp.   HENARE avoids a Malo Crash and hits a lariat.  Both men are exhausted.  They trade strikes and Tsuji hits a high knee.   HENARE hits a Rampage.   Two count.  They trade headbutts.  Tsuji hits a Gene Blaster.

Tsuji pins HENARE.

Yota Tsuji has 8 points.

HENARE has 6 points.

After the match, HENARE crawled to Chris Charlton at English Commentary to ask if he was eliminated.   Charlton told him that he has to win all his remaining G1 matches.

7 - Yuya Uemura vs. Ren Narita

Both men were competitive until the referee bumped.   Kanemaru comes into the ring with a Suntory Surprise but misses.   Uemura takes him out.  Narita grabs his push up bar.  Uemura kicks the bar to the floor and hits a Dragon Suplex.  Narita kicks out.  Uemura goes for a Deadbolt but Narita pushes the referee and low blows Uemura.  Narita hits the Double Cross.

Narita pins Uemura.

Ren Narita has 8 points.

Yuya Uemura has 6 points.

8 - Hirooki Goto vs. David Finlay

Finlay's left shoulder is taped up.   The G1 is starting to wear down the wrestlers.

Another good stiff match.  Finlay hit a powerbomb for a two count.   Goto hits a Shoten Kai for a near fall.   Finlay goes for his shillelagh, but he misses Goto.  Goto headbutts him in the face.  Goto tosses his weapon from the ring.  Goto hits a GTW.   Two count.  Finlay blocks a GTR.  Goto blocks an Overkill and headbutts Finlay in the jaw.   Goto hammerlocks Finlay's left shoulder and hits a GTR.

Goto pins Finlay.

Hirooki Goto has 8 points.

David Finlay has 8 points.

Hirooki Goto is a fun tournament wrestler.

Jeff Cobb remains at the top of B Block.

The top three in each block will get to the quarterfinals on August 15.

Hirooki Goto addresses the fans and notes that his kids were in attendance.   He jokes with them that Daddy did his best so they have to do better with their homework.   He tells the fans that G in G1 stands for Goto.   That got a massive pop.

Hirooki Goto has been the NEVER Openweight Champion and multi Tag Team Champion.  He once held the now defunct IWGP Intercontinental Championship.   He has never won the IWGP World Heavyweight Title nor the IWGP Global Championship.  With his win over David Finlay, perhaps this is a possibility.   Despite the commentators referring to him as one of the older wrestlers in the G1, Goto can still great matches, and a good tournament wrestler.   He made it to the Finals of the New Japan Cup in March before losing to Yota Tsuji.

The final week of the G1 Climax 34 will be fun to watch.
