It is Wednesday and AEW Dynamite’s 250th episode is coming to us from the Simmons Bank Arena in Little Rock AK. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Taz and Tony Schiavone.
Will Ospreay (AEW International Champion) vs MJF
We start right off with this match and after they take time to start, MJF goes into the crowd, throws a drink on a fan, rips up another’s sign and then gets back in the ring. MJF keeps on with classic heel techniques of saying Ospreay is grabbing his hair, and stalling techniques like dropping to the mat and getting in the ropes. In doing this, Ospreay can’t get anything started. The crowd is fully into this, louder than the announcers at times.
Ospreay, once he is able to take control, is just amazing in his moves. He had a leap front he top, MJF dodges it, Ospreay lands on his feet, leaps a second time, and MJF dodges that, and OIpsrreay hits on the third leap. They start trading Big Moves, with MJF striking like lightning via sneaky tactics and Ospreay just working to try to get past MJF’s attacks and dodging. Both of these guys are just milking the crowd reactions and getting the most out of everything they do.
For example, they work a figure four leg lock, fight going back and forth and then wrenching every second of drama until Ospreay gets to the rope, and then Ospreay sells the leg as MJF goes after him on the apron as Ospreay is trying to get feeling back in the leg. MJF keeps going after the leg with a chop block, stomps, and more as Ospreay is trying to lay in blows.
They don’t go to the first commercial for picture in picture until around the 25 minute mark. We come back to big moves and near falls. They fight through the crowd, “The referee is using his discretion, doesn’t want to count either man out” as they keep brawling. MJF takes the beating as they brawl, and when they get back in the ringside area, Ospreay rolls into the ring quickly to break the count, as if that mattered. They tease a table spot, and MJF rolls into the ring instead.
They hit a few moves in the ring and then go back to brawling around the ring. After MJF works over Ospreay, Ospreay is able to get a big move and move the match back into the ring where we go back to big movies and near falls. Ospreay is able to get a Styles Clash on the apron for two. They fight through another commercial break and we come back and it’s fifteen minutes to the hour. It looks like we’re going to get a time limit draw.
They do a great bit where MJF pulls Ospreay off the apron, turns to the camera and says he’s the smartest wrestler in the entire world as Ospreray comes behind him with a huddle blade off the apron. They go back to fighting in the ring and Opreay is able to get a Styles Clash from the second turnbuckle. Holy crap that looked brutal.
We finally get the table spot when MJF comes off the top through Ospreay on the table on the floor leading to another picture in picture break. When we come back, MJF has the abdominal stretch where he grabs the rope when the ref can’t see. He gets caught and Ospreay gets a big hip toss. This leads to a quick series of near falls. They are almost an hour into this match and going full bore with big moves and counters. The fact that they are working with such speed and precision this deep in the match is just insane.
We get the one minute warning and Ospreay puts MJF in the Tiger Driver and then releases the hold because he vowed not to use it again. MJF shoves Ospreay into the ref and then nails Ospreay with the Dynamite Diamond. The ref counts MJF’s pin and the bell rings. We get a long pause…and then we are told:
Winner and NEW International Champion at 59 minutes and 57 seconds: MJF
We are shown the Dynamite Diamond on the floor where MJF tossed it after using it.
In the back, The Acclaimed and Mark Briscoe are with Arkady Aura, and The Acclaimed say they want in Blood and Guts, and Mark says he’s fine with it, but he’s not the only man in the fight. We see Swerve, who says no one better to go to war with than people you’ve been violent with.
Next is TV Time with Chris Jericho who says that if you don’t listen to him, bad things happen and he shows all of the people and the bad things that have happened to them. He talks about how people should listen to him in the most insincere way possible.
We then hear the music and see Minoru Suzuki. He comes to the ring with a piece of paper in his hand. He grabs Jericho’s mic and says “Next week”. Bryan Keith reads the paper which says next week, Large William and Bryan Keith are banned from ringside as Suzuki fights Jericho for the FTW Title.
We then get the Young Bucks with Okada and they say next week, they will win and will have all the titles if Swerve is unable to hold the AEW Title. Mercedes Mone shows and thanks the Bucks for banning Britt Baker from the building. MOne does her CEO dance and Okada starts sweating, saying her dance is super hot.
Mercedes Mone (TBS Champion) vs Nyla Rose
Mone does a decent job of looking concerned as Nyla comes to the ring. Nyla is cast as the massive monster in this match as she just flings Mone around with power moves. I loved it when Mone tried to take Nyla down and she just shouted “HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND!” Roise just dominates as the match goes on. As we get to the end of the match, Mone gets in the Statement Maker and Nyla has to tap out.
Winner and still TBS Champion: Mercedes Mone
I wish they would have had Mone do more to wear down Nyla with Nyla looking like she was just destroying her.
After the match, a fan in the crowd in a mask piefaces Money. The fan takes their mask off, and it’s Britt Baker, who is grabbed by security as we go to a video package about Mariah May turning on Toni Storm.
We see Jack Perry backstage and he tells Darby he didn’t need to attack Brandon Cutler because he doesn’t care about Brandon. Perry then attacks Brandon and says to come find him.
We then get Mariah May coming to the ring dressed as Toni Storm with Toni’s music and black and white aesthetic. May says everyone saw it coming but Toni, who is so desperate for the spotlight, she was giving it all away. She says the question isn’t why, it’s what took so long. She saw Wembley and said she could take Toni out in front of the most people possible. She says she still loves Toni and never loved her more than when she was on her knees, bleeding, and crying her name.
She says that All Elite Wrestling is all about Mariah.
We get a backstage video from Saturday, The Gunns and Juice Robinson say to get the titles, you’ll have to take them from their cold, dead hands. Christopher Daniels says he doesn’t like it either, but if they don’t give up the title, he’ll have to suspend them. They give them up and cut a promo that they will beat the Patriarchy to get them back.
As we go into the main event, there are only 10 minutes left before the house, so we are getting another overrun at the least.
Swerve Strickland (AEW World Champion) vs Kazuchika Okada
Would they do it again?
They start with hold/counterhold, and each going for a finishing move and dodging the other’s finisher. They fight through the commercial break and they continue to jockey for position. Swerve is able to get a big move (the first real one in the match) for a two count as we pass the top of the hour. Both men are working a slower, more wrestling based style than we are used to from them.
Neither is getting a big advantage as they counter each other’s kicks and strikes. The Young Bucks show in the ring and attack Swerve.
Winner by disqualification: Swerve Strickland
It’s time for everyone in the Blood and Guts match to hit the ring. Hangman Adam Page’s music hits and Okada attacks Swerve and they fight into the crowd. Darby’s music hits and he descends from the rafters and everyone is brawling again. Blood and Guts next week and we’re out of time!
