ROH Episode 71 Review: “An Honorable Fourth of July”
Happy Fourth of July! Even though this episode was on the shorter side, we still had a very patriotic episode of ROH TV! There’s not much more to say, so let’s go on with the show!
The Infantry Welcome Us:
The Infantry welcomed us to the Fourth of July episode by telling us they will host tonight’s episode. After fighting over why we are celebrating today, they say that tonight’s episode will be great and that we are in for a wonderful show.
Proving Grounds Match for the Trio’s Championships: The Dark Order: Alex Reynolds, John Silver, and Evil Uno vs Bang Bang Gang (Juice Robinson, Austin, and Colton Gunn):
I'm glad our trio’s champions made an appearance on the show for the first time since winning these titles… Since they are dual champions they should be appearing on both ROH and AEW more frequently, but at least we got them on this episode. This one was quick as Robinson got the win for his team, who knows when we are going to see this team again in ROH?
Winners: “And Still” Bang Bang Gang (Juice Robinson, Austin, and Colton Gunn)
The Infantry at the Liberty Bell:
The Infantry teaches the fans about the Liberty Bell and compares it to the bell that rings before the matches. They run down the card and they get upset when they talk about the Tag Team Titles Proving Grounds Match. They say they want another match against the Kingdom soon.
Atlantis Jr.
They showed a video package from last weekend's CMLL event, where Kyle Fletcher lost the ROH TV Championship to Atlantis Jr. Fletcher has challenged Atlantis Jr. to a rematch on American soil, so I am going to assume this match is going to happen at DBD
Emergency MEM:
Athena says that now that they have their locker room and security this is what safety feels like. Until Red Velvet and Queen Aminata interrupt. Red Velvet says that at DBD it will be her vs Billie Starkz for the ROH TV Championship, and Queen Aminata is going to challenge Athena. As Athena laughs off the challenge they say they got an email that Lexy Nair was on the email. When Athena yells at Nair for not telling her, she says she thought it was a scam, but it came directly from Tony Khan. While Athena continues to mutter she is not cleared she screams Tony Khans name and marches to his office.
The Infantry at the White House:
The Infantry teaches us about the White House and they talk about all of the great things that happen in the White House. They then talk about how many hours of wrestling are on Honor Club and that you can watch it at any time and anywhere.
Proving Grounds Match for the ROH Tag Team Championships: The Kingdom (Matt Taven and Mike Bennett) vs Metalik and Komander:
This was the best match in the episode. The crowd was heavily invested and the commentary team did a great job hinting at the fact The Kingdom might be taking the Proving Ground Matches too lightly. Metalik and Komander latest seven out of the ten minutes as The Kingdom retain. After the match was over Taven and Bennett continued to beat down Komander and Metalik as they showed off their ROH Tag Team Championships.
Winners: “And Still” The Kingdom (Matt Taven and Mike Bennett)
MXM Promo Video:
They showed a promo video for Mansor and Mace calling them the MXM Collective. They did not say when the team is coming, but I can assume they will be wrestling the Kingdom at DBD. These two will be a fun addition to the ROH brand and I would not mind them winning the ROH Tag Team titles either.
The Infantry and Mount Rushmore:
The Infantry shows us Mount Rushmore and replaces two of the historical figures with their heads on the statue instead. They talk about how they are hungry for gold and they want to win gold soon. They promote DBD which will be in a couple of weeks and tell us to enjoy the main event!
Proving Grounds Match for the ROH Pure Championships: Wheeler Yuta vs Lee Moriarty:
Look what other champion has returned to ROH! Also, grounds were finally proven. The crowd was not into this one until the final minutes, but I also blame that on the fact they may not have known all the Pure Rules, since our champion has not been on since last year. Moriarty becomes the first person this year to make a Proving Grounds match go to a tie and earn a future title shot!
Overall:
Now, I fully understand that today was a holiday, but I would have rather them not run an episode. The Infantry hosting was dumb as they were in front of a green screen just teaching us about the Fourth of July, this was very WWE. The matches could have been held off till next week instead of this feeling like a filler episode. Until next week…
