AEW DYNAMITE BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2024-07-03 22:23:00

It is Wednesday and AEW Dynamite is coming to us from the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, IL. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Taz, and Tony Schiavone. This is the annual Beach Break episode, so of course when you think summer beaches, you think…

…Chicago?

We start with Renee Paquette with Daniel Garcia and Matt Menard, and Daniel is going for the International Championship against Will Ospreay. He says he respects Will, but he is not losing the match tonight. MJF shows up to tell him he wants to be in his corner, and Daniel agrees.

Bryan Danielson vs Pac in an Owen Hart Tournament match

The stories going into this is that Bryan’s neck is not at 100%, and Pac is fighting back after a short losing streak. Crowd starts with a “Holy S#!t” chant as these two have not met in the ring in over 15 years.

These guys work a stiff, hard hitting style.  Pac is so good at holding off on the big moves until it makes sense to use them to press an advantage. As we go into the first commercial break, Pac has the upper hand and Bryan is fighting off his constant attacks. They are both so good at making it look like a fight.

We come back to Daneilson pressing an advantage with kicks and strikes. As they fight on the floor, Pac takes control again, and his moves are so sharp, so precise, he works well with Bryan’s current style of trying to fight back from underneath because of his injuries. Pac hits a sheer drop brainbuster from the top that looked amazing. Pac then misses a Black Arrow and Bryan follows with a psycho knee. They trade submissions with rollups until Bryan is able to get a crucifix pin for the pin and the win.

Winner and moving on: Bryan Danielson

Just a fantastic match to start the show.  They should get a match later, where they can get more time.

Renee interviews Willow Nightingale and she explains why she always looks on the bright side. She then says that while Stokely Hathaway and Kris Statlander don’t understand it, she will give it the fight of her life and be the first person to be a Two Time Owen Hart tournament winner.

Mark Briscoe is in the ring with a mic. He says last week he lost the ladder match to Jack Perry, but he’s thinking about this week and this week is shark week. He says that when he thinks of blood, he is a part of the Blood and Guts match in three weeks. Jack Perry attacks Bricoe from behind and Kyle O’Reilly attacks him. Kazuchika Okada hits the ring and takes him out. This brings out the Young Bucks.

The Bucks hit the ring and hit the EVP trigger on him. The Elite stand tall, holding their titles and The Acclaimed hit the ring and The Elite scatter through the crowd.

In the back, Toni Storm gives Mariah May a pep talk for her upcoming match with Saraya.

Willow Nightingale vs Kris Statlander w/Stokely Hathaway

Kris charges up the ramp to attack Willow, but she is ready. They brawl and Willow hits a pounce, knocking Kris down the tramp into the ringside area. Willow has turned it into a fight and when they get into the ring, Willow is taking out her anger on Kris. The match is laid out as Willow getting revenge and we get very little offense from Kris.

We do see Stokely put a chain in the corner for Kris. He gets on the apron to distract Willow, but it does no good as Willow avoids the attack and is able to get the surprise rollup.

Winner and moving on in the tournament: Willow Nightingale

In the back, Jeff Jarrett and his crew are with Renee and she asks about the emotional impact of the match tonight and he walks away, unable to speak.

Tony Schiavone is in the ring and he brings out Britt Baker. Tony leaves the ring and hands her the mic. She talks about how she was banged up and mentally she was running on empty. she goes into her injury and how she kept telling herself she was fine. She said she had what doctors told her she had a mini-stroke. She says that now she is cleared and healthy. She said she was nervous about coming back, but the crowd cheering her at Forbidden Door made it all go away. She tells the crowd to go through it to get better and to be elite.

She then brings up Mercedes Mone. She then gets incredibly sarcastic about Mone, and says the only three letters that matter in this company are DMD.

We then see Mone has arrived and she chats with the Young Bucks who say her victory celebration is ready. We see all of the balloons and such brought out as Baker is still in the ring and Mone comes out of the Heel tunnel.

Britt refuses to move as Mone gets into the ring. They have words and the crowd is all over Mone and Britt says All In.

She explains how she was at the first All In. Mone shoves Baker away and says there is a long list of women to face her and Baker is at the back of the line. Baker says she doesn’t see a line. Mone holds up her belts in Baker’s face.

In the back, Renee with Will Ospreay and Klye Fletcher, and Don Callis shows before he can say anything. Renee leaves. Will says he couldn’t bring himself to hit the Tiger Driver and he is not that guy any more. He says that Callis gave him so much over the years, but he wants out.

Callus says he usually doesn’t let people out of signed agreements, but he is so proud of him and will do him the favor. Don tells Kyle to come with him, and Kyle hesitates before leaving.

Chris Jericho comes to the ring with Large William and Bryan Keith. Taz says there is security at the desk and Jericho says he will help with commentary because he needs his TV time. He then says that Hook broke the rule of wrestling by stealing his finisher and that doesn’t work for him, brother. He then says that Taz was cheering for Hook. He says that The Bucks have relieved Taz of his duties for the rest of the night and has to leave the arena.

Security walks Taz to the back.

Samoa Joe, Hook, and Katsuyori Shibata vs Cage of Agony (Brian Cage, Toa Leona and Bishop Kaun)

Joe and Leona start with a big ol’ hoss fight. Next we get Cage and Shibata. After they trade some moves, Hook tags in and Kaun is tagged in. They go to picture in picture and Shibata is the babyface in peril through the break. Hook gets the hot tag and he is cut off by Kaun and he becomes the babyface in peril.

Hook gets the hot tag to Joe and he takes everyone down with Big Man moves and then as he gets a pin, that sets off the tag team siren and all six men are in the ring. Joe’s team puts all of the Gates of Agony in sleepers for the win. This was a match to let Joe’s team get their win back from the PPV.

Winner: Samoa Joe, Katsuyori Shibata, and Hook

Chris Jericho says he is going to congratulate them, and Large William and Bryan Keith attack them from behind. Keith gets rid of his sling and Jericho’s team works over Joe’s team.

Hook is left laying in the ring, and Keith sets up a table in the ring. William choke slams Hook through the table.

Jeff Jarrett vs Hangman Adam Page in a Owen Hart Tournament match.

A reminder that The Elite suspended Page, but now he is their pick to face Jarrett. The announcers put over that we don't know why they ended his suspension. The crowd is mixed on his return, cheering, but not for long and not loudly.

Page has an angry expression on his face through the whole match, and the announcers put over that he is going out of his way to hurt Jarrett, not win the match. As with most of Jarrett’s matches over the last couple years, he takes the crowd on a roller coaster ride, this time working as a babyface. Page keeps working heel and making sure his facial expression never changes.

The crowd is chanting for Swerve Strickland.

Jarrett is able to catch Page from the buckshot lariat into a sharpshooter, but Page makes it to the ropes. Page gets the second one and then starts pummeling Jarrett. Page hits a deadeye for the pin and the win.

Winner and moving on: Adam Page

Jarrett is left in the middle of the ring and Page immediately goes to the back. Karen Jerrett hits the ring to check on him.

Backstage, we see Jericho throw a fireball at Hook as Hook is being checked by the medical professionals.

In the back, Renee is with Adam Page and the Young Bucks show up to congratulate him and send Renee away. The Bucks ask if Page will be the 5th man in Blood and Guts. Page grabs Matt and says he isn’t their puppet any more and he will win the Owen. He then storms out and the Bucks ask if the segment can be cut.

Will Ospreay (AEW INternational Champion) vs Daniel Garcia w/MJF

The announcers put over that Ospreay is banged up from his title match Sunday night. Garcia keeps going after the neck of Ospreay as he works the match. There is a sequence where MJF and Ospreay come face to face on the outside of the ring and MJF backs off without doing anything.

After the commercial break, Ospreay is taking chops, but he fires up and starts hitting neck breakers. Garcia keeps working on the neck and Ospreay tries to get big moves, but Garcia keeps cutting him off. When Osptreay is in control, he taunts Garcia. We then move to the Big Moves into two counts and the crowd bites on each one.

MJF leaves the Dynamite Diamond Ring on the mat for Garcia. Garcia struggles with what to do and eventually gives the ring back to MJF. Ospreay hits the hidden blade when Garcia turns around for the pin and the win.

Winner and still International Champion: Will Ospreay

Ospreay talks to Garcia to console him in the corner after the match. Ospreay leaves and MJF does the same and he says the loss was on him, not on him. After getting the crowd to cheer for Garcia, MJF gives him a low blow. Matt Manard comes to the ring and takes a shot from MJF with the Diamond. When Garcia gets up, MJF takes him out with the ring as well. Security hits the ring and he fights them away and then goes to beating down Garcia, who is busted open.

MJF hits a pile driver from the second rope as Christopher Daneils and referees tell him to stop. Ospreay hits the ring for the save and MJF bails and leaves through the crowd. Garcia is stretchered out and we’re out of time.
