ROH Episode 70 Review: “Welcome Back Champ”

For the first time in two months, the ROH World Heavyweight Champion is back on TV. Although he will be facing another ROH Champion in this episode's main event (sigh) this at least means we are inching towards the next pay-per-view Death Before Dishonor! With all of that being said, let’s review this week's ROH episode!

Emergency MEM:

Athena says that she does not feel safe at work anymore and now she is out for longer. She has hired private security to protect herself. Billie Starkz says she is tired of the disrespect and she wants everyone to respect Athea. Lexy Nair says that they need to prove that the true people who run ROH are MIT. Athena and Starkz then say that they need to get Nair a title as they are motivated and ready for what’s next.

Alex Reynolds vs Lee Johnson:

This was a more technical type of match which I did not expect out of these too. I’ve said for a while now that if AEW was not going to use The Dark Order on AEW every week, they should be featured on ROH. I also still have a feeling with how prominently they are pushing Johnson that he will win the TV Title by the end of the year. This match also got a ton of time as Reynolds was leaning more into the heel persona, Johnson gets the win!

Winner: Lee Johnson

Marina Shafir vs Erica Leigh:

Only took 15 minutes into the episode to get out first squash. Sigh.

Winner: Marina Shafir

Undisputed Kingdom Promo:

After Bennett and Taven made fun of Arkiddy’s name Taven said that everyone in ROH was wasting their time. They want more competition within ROH as Bennett then prayed to Tony Khan for a team that is on their level. Bennett said they want more competition because every time you step in the ring with them, they are getting the best tag team in the world. They want a challenge and tell a team to talk to them to set up a match.

Lance Archer and The Righteous (Dutch and Vincent) vs Duke Davis, Victor Benjamin, and Ganon Jones Jr.:

Well, we all knew how this one ended.

Winners: Lance Archer and The Righteous (Dutch and Vincent)

Taya Valkyrie vs Trish Adora:

I hope this leads to Adore being used more frequently on ROH. Valkyrie continues to show as a veteran how much she is and how she can elevate the ROH Women’s Division. Compared to most of the matches in this episode, this match got time which was nice to see. Valkyrie gets the win as she looks to set her eyes on Queen Aminata.

Winner: Taya Valkyrie

Leyla Hirsch Promo:

Hirsch says that after her impressive win last week, she was not surprised that Diamante attacked her last week. Diamante says that no one remembers Hirsch beating her four times, but all people remember is Diamante leaving Hirsch laid out. Diamante challenges her to a No Holds Barred match in the future.

ROH Women’s World Television Championship Proving Grounds Match: Billie Starkz vs Angelica Risk:

I would love it if we put Starkz in an actual match instead of Proving Grounds Matches that mean nothing every week.

Winner: “And Still” Billie Starkz

ROH World Heavyweight Championship: Mark Briscoe vs Kyle Fletcher:

This is the first time we have seen Briscoe on HonorClub since April… I also personally did not like that we did champion vs champion. Even though Fletcher pinned Briscoe a couple of weeks ago on Dynamite we are lucky if we get two champions on the show at all we do not need two of the champions facing off against each other. As far as the match was concerned it was fine. Both of these men are good at what they do and they continue to prove that whether on AEW TV or HonorClub. Fletcher goes off to Mexico this weekend to defend the ROH TV Championship against Atlantis Jr, hopefully in a big win for Fletcher.

Winner: “And Still” Mark Briscoe

Overall:

Another episode that meant nothing. Out of the six matches we had in this episode, only three of them were not squash matches, which is sad. Although we were able to have three champions in action, I need ROH to get some storylines together as we are heading into the pay-per-view next month. There has been nothing announced for the show and it is four weeks away. Oh well, until next week.
