He began his career winning gold medals at the World Championships and the Olympics. Oleksandr Usyk turned professional in 2013 and swiftly became a force in the cruiserweight division. Three years later, he took the cruiserweight title after defeating Krzysztof Głowacki.
However, his defining moment happened during the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS). He participated intending to unify the cruiserweight division and defeated Marco Huck, Mairis Briedis, and Murat Gassiev to win the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring cruiserweight titles. After these matches, he became an undisputed cruiserweight champion. However, he moved up to the heavyweight division.
His debut was a major performance against Chazz Witherspoon, where he won through a seventh-day stoppage. His next fight was against Derek Chisora a year later, where he won unanimously. This match showcased his ability to handle the size and strength of heavyweight opponents. Later on, in 2021, his dual match with Anthony Joshua for the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles was a success. He won by split decision and took on the status of one of the top heavyweights in the world.

Tyson Fury was always deemed the favourite because of his reach, size, and undefeated record, especially in recent major performances. On the other hand, Oleksandr Usyk was perceived as a strong and respected underdog because of his speed, skill, and undefeated record, too. However, after the near-disaster match between Fury and Ngannou, the odds changed in favour of Usyk. Originally, Fury was -260, and Usyk was +200.
