Memphis Wrestling broadcast their "Championship Saturday" episode yesterday 6/8 from The WrestleCenter in Memphis, Tennessee.
MacKenzie Morgan pinned Cassandra Golden with a belly to belly suplex to retain the Memphis Wrestling Women's Championship. Niki XS was at ringside scouting. Action was fine but short match.
Memphis Internet Champion Aaron Roberts defeated Tom Bosby. The story was that Bosby was trying to become the first person to win the title for the third time. Bosby has a great amateur pedigree and you can see it with his footwork and placement in the ring. The announcers pushed that fans want to chant Egg Sucking Dog as Roberts. Roberts, who is billed at over 400 pounds, hit a pretty impressive dropkick. The story was power vs. finesse with Bosby trying to set up for suplexes. Roberts cheated to win to keep the story going.
GCW Champion Blake Christian pinned Zay Washington. Christian was full blown snarky heel here. He nailed several dives and was very aggressive. Washington kept scoring two counts, surprising Christian. Christian caught him with a superkick as he was coming off the top and drilled him with a curbstomp for the pin.
Sir Matthew & Lord Gaston defeated Big John Dalton and mystery partner Scotty Riggs for the Memphis Wrestling Tag Team Championship. The back story was that Gaston and Matthew had bullied John Dalton for his fandom of Buff Bagwell, so Buff came to Memphis to team with Dalton and win the belts. Bagwell wasn't cleared to keep competing, so the belts were vacated. Bagwell promised to get Dalton a new partner and it was Scotty Riggs, his former partner in WCW as The American Males. Riggs tossed a few dropkicks and built up to tagging Dalton. Dalton ended up double-teamed and Riggs complained, which only allowed the heels to keep the cheating going. Riggs was tagged in and they built to a hot tag with Dalton hitting the right with clotheslines and side slam. He went to the top but Nyx, billed as Goddess of the Night, showed up and nailed him with a steel chair, setting up the new champs.
Memphis Wrestling Heritage Champion K-Toomer defeated Herzog. Herzog, dressed like a caveman, is part of The Circus heel stable managed by Barnabus the Ring Master, full of all sorts of freaky characters. It was all Herzog early on, including a chokeslam on Toomer, who is billed at 380 lbs. Toomer nailed a nice German suplex. Toomer nailed his finisher, the Seismic Toss for the pin. Real short. The Circus attacked Toomer and swarmed over him. Gunshow Brett Michaels hit the ring with a chair to make the save, showing respect for Toomer, even though he's chasing the title as well.
The show is exactly what you'd think. A lot of young talents very early on in their careers trying to make it work. But, as a one hour show that is produced really tightly, I always find myself enjoying it. They work hard to give everything a much credibility as they can, right down to the commentary and ring announcer treating everything as if it was transported from the 1980s. There's lot of little touches to keep it local like a "fan of the week" segment, lots of local ads and an intimate building where you can literally see how into everything the audience, many of whom are leaping up and down standing instead of sitting, truly are. These are their local heroes and villains, no different from the fans in fictional Duffy, GA from Heels. A special shout out to the guy wearing the "I'm A Sam Bass Guy" shirt!
Upcoming events for the promotion: They will hold a "Wrestling Night" with the Memphis Redbirds on 6/22 with Enzo Amore at Autozone Park...AJ Francis and Enzo Amore will be on their 6/23 taping at the WrestleCenter....They will be hosting a Forbidden Door Watch Party on 6/30 Dave & Busters Memphis at 2751 Wolf Creek Parkway....Parker Bordeaux is booked for their 7/14 taping, which has been dubbed MemphisXL....They are running a benefit event for St. Jude's on 8/10 at the Pontotoc County Agri-Center in Pontotoc, MS...The Sandman is booked for their 8/25 taping.
