WWE RAW MAY 27, 2024
STEEL CAGE
While the cage match itself wasn’t particularly good as a match, it was very newsworthy, and had a brilliantly creative finish, playing off the show-long Braun Strowman chase of JD McDonagh. Are we leading towards a second ever Summerslam ladder match for custody of Dominik between Rhea Ripley & Liv Morgan? If you like soap opera in your wrestling, this is the story for you. There is a lot to keep you guessing, with the main question being, is Dom helping Liv on purpose?
That’s it for now for Becky Lynch. She did a nice job in handing things over to Liv Morgan with her short title run, and will presumably take an extended break away from WWE. I don’t believe for a second she will end up in AEW. Becky has had a hall of fame career already in WWE, and at this point, has very little left to do, so a break away means she can come back as a fresh character with fresh goals, whenever that may be.
VOICE OF REASON
It looks like Sami Zayn is trying to be for Otis, what he was for Jey Uso, and talk him out of a bad situation. This was a really good angle, as we presumably move one step closer to Otis splitting away from Chad Gable and getting the babyface run he lost during the pandemic. Maxine standing up for herself was a welcome surprise, because weeks of her standing there with a gormless look on her face, taking abuse from Gable, was starting to make her look stupid. Thankfully, Sami Zayn is still involved here, because he vs Gable should be the end goal of all this, and I was worried Zayn was going to move onto something else to leave The Academy meltdown as the main focus for Gable. My hope is we get a big Intercontinental Championship match between Gable & Zayn at Summerslam.
JUDGMENT DAY
The story of Damien Priest having to step up, and fix things for the imploding Judgment Day continued here, and in the process, made the world champion look like a major badass. Carlito had his best in ring showing since his return against Rey Mysterio, even adding some new moves to his repertoire, which was good to see, as Carlito can often come across as a guy going through the motions. Rey Mysterio vs Damien Priest is set for next week, and I am really looking forward to that one as Rey always works extremely well with athletic big men.
POST SAUDI BLUES
This was a very post Saudi edition of Raw. Whether it was a tired crew, or whatever else, this episode of Raw felt very much like a placeholder show. There was very little of note or importance on the show. Bron continued to wreak havoc during the excellent Ricochet vs Dragunov match. Lyra Valkyria got a win back after losing the Queen of the Ring final. There was a nice brawl to set up Ludwig Kaiser vs Sheamus next week, and an opening segment between the three heels in the world title picture, that accomplished its goal of setting things up for the coming weeks and months, even if it was quite awkward at times. Raw definitely feels like it is lacking in some star power at the moment. Outside of the main event, and Alpha Academy angle, this was a very skippable show.
