AEW Collision
5/25/24 - Las Vegas
“Double or Nothing” is only a day away so what last minute takeaways will we get tonight before the PPV? It’s the five year anniversary of AEW on TBS! Tony Schiavone and Nigel McGuinness are on commentary.
We kick it off with Jon Moxley. He comes through the crowd as they talk about this being the day and the building where Moxley debuted in AEW five year ago. He doesn’t even get a word in as he hits the ring before Don Callis is out here. Crowd just goes from fire to flat as Don’s “music” drones on. And they boo him to death as he tries to talk. About their history. He makes a point to immediately remind Mox how he cost him the AEW World Championship. THAT seems like a smart thing to do. Crowd is louuuuud. But of course, Callis also reminds him how Mox got his revenge and how Callis later helped Mox regain that belt. They aren’t that different. They are both “high functioning sociopaths”. Crowd reallllly doesn’t like that. Don doesn’t want the match with Takeshita to happen…he offers Mox a spot in the Callis family? Feels like a trap. Is it a trap? Jon has a question. He wants more of a commitment…he wants to put 24 more stitches in his head. Yeah….here it is….It’s a trap. Takeshita comes in from behind. He smashes Mox’s arm inside a chair ahead of tomorrow’s IWGP Title Eliminator match. Blackpool Combat Club runs them off but it’s clear Mox is in trouble for the PPV.
We see video of The Undisputed Era bloodying up Will Ospreay. Backstage promo with Will with a crimson match. Massively fired up. He said it looks bad but this is nothing but a weekend bender. Now he’s bloody bonded with that championship…and he’s taking that belt tomorrow.
Match 1: Claudio Castagnoli & Daniel Garcia & ??? vs Lance Archer & The Righteous (Vincet & Dutch)
This match is advertised as Garcia & Claudio getting a mystery partner (Claudio reallllly seems “thrilled” about teaming with Garcia)…and Hiroshi Tanahashi is the secret partner!!! Crowd LOVES this. Claudio and Dutch kick it of and the big Swiss shows off his power with a big slam! Vincent starts to swarm on Garcia but Daniel is all fire. Tanahashi and Garcia with a stereo neck breake. Claudio wants that giant swing but they take too much time preening and the tide shifts to the Righteous. Garcia getting all the heat here. Tanahasi with the hot tag….he cuts down Archer with a running forearm! Everyone hitting the floor. No one left to stop Claudio from swinging Dutch….Archer cuts it off but Claudio powers him up for a vertical suplex! Tanahashi heads up top but Archer starches him with a knee. Step up cutter from the swamp cult almost puts the Ace down. Sling Blade to Vincent! Tanahasi gets to the top and hits a splash for the win! Good opener.
Winner: Tanahashi, Claudio & Garcia
Over to a documentary style promotion of the EVP Elite. It’s a beautiful one-sided political style promo that shows the Bucks in the greatest possible light and portray Danielson & friends as pure scum who want to spit in the face of the great company they have built. It was great. I want to see more promo videos like this....in wrestling. Not in politics. lol.
Match 2: Lucha Bros (Penta & Fenix w/ Alex Aberhantes, Pentacito & Fenixito) vs The Gunns (Austin & Colten)
BABY LUCHAS!!!! Tonight we determine if Lucha Bros trios match with the Bang Bang Gang tomorrow night will be for the titles. Of course, the Gunns are all about softening LB up for tomorrow, regardless of the stipulation. Austin ties Penta’s mask to the bottom rope and stomps him out. Penta eats the post and gets bounced off the apron. It’s not QUITE classic tag wrestling here. Fenix trying to fire Penta back into it but the Gunns are just pummeling and double teaming him to death. Finally a superkick gets Fenix into the contest! The Lucha Bros trying to close it out quick but the Gunns are displaying better tag chemistry to stay on top. LB cuts off the 3:10 to Yuma. Austin eats a double stomp fear factor!
Winners: Lucha Bros
PAC joins them for the celebration as Death Triangle is reunited as Trios Challengers! Jay White is out here on the ramp with the trios belts and a golden bat? He doesn’t look happy but both teams have a bit of a ramp to ring stare down.
Backstage with Chris Jericho and Big Bill. His mocking of being the “longest reigning For the World” champion is gold. Bryan Keith pops in to say that he’s coming for Jericho as well. “THANKS BRIAN”! Lol. The tone here was great.
Match 3: Kyle O’Reilly vs KM
KM is huge compared to Kyle. He tries to swarm him early but Kyle wraps up a guillotine to slow him down. KM powering up after a couple of kicks but O’Reilly quickly bring shim down with a cross arm breaker for the QUICK submission.
Winner: Kyle O’Reilly
Willow Nightingale is out her to talk about Mercedes Moné putting hands on the TBS Championship last night at Rampage. I love Willow embracing this reign as being the “face of TBS”. Willow has respect for Mercedes but she won’t be beat. Willow is going to WRECK HER and make her pine for the days she was on the injury list. Waaaaaaaow. She knows championship reigns come and go but it’s not ending tomorrow night.
Backstage with Trent Berretta. He already ending Chuck Taylor’s career. He’s coming for the “con man” Orange Cassidy tomorrow. Rocky Romero out here to say that they are family and whatever happens tomorrow, they are still more than just friends. Trent says that ain’t happening and walks off.
Match 4: House of Black (Buddy Matthews & Brody King) vs Gates of Agony (Kaun & Liona w/ Brian Cage) vs The Infantry (Shawn Dean & Carli Bravo w/ Trish Adora) vs The Acclaimed (Max Caster & Anthony Bowens w/ Daddy Ass)
No Malakai Black tonight. He must still be in the shower. It’s wild that I saw Max Caster in Worcester the other night and here he is in Las Vegas. This is fast paced to start but the crowd just wants to see King fight Liona, wipe everyone out and chant “meat” at them. This is great. Liona to the floor to fight everyone but King with a high velocity suicide dive takes everyone out. Wild. Great chaos between all four teams, I’m not gonna try to call it all. Infantry gets King alone in the ring while Daddy Ass and Cage join the fray and battle to the back. Matthews makes to save and House of Black puts Bravo away with a cannonball/dropkick combo for the win!
Winners: House of Black
Promo from Adam Copeland. He’s talking about the return of his mindset where there is ONLY a devil on his shoulder. This isn’t going to be Black’s dream of Copeland losing and join the HOB. What if Copeland wins and Matthews/King decide to join HIM? “When you see evil in a man’s eyes….it’s already too late”
Backstage with Timeless Toni Storm. She’s gonna take out Serena Deeb tomorrow night “Don’t worry, in your obituary, they will mention that you lost to the champ” - fantastic line.
Match 5: Mariah May vs Leyla Hirsch
Leyla gets an entrance but this is more about Mariah May, who dominates much of this. Leyla shows a little fire but May dodges a moonsault. Backdrop driver from May. Shotgun dropkick from the top doesn’t put Hirsch away. Leyla dropped with a running knee for the win. Good long form squash.
Winner: Mariah May
Backstage with Serena Deeb. This title’s match is a long time coming for her. “Time’s Up, Toni Storm”. Some good closing lines tonight.
Main Event: Bryan Danielson & FTR (Wheeler & Harwood) vs Jay Lethal, Satnum Signh & Jeff Jarrett (w/ Sonjay Dutt & Karen Jarrett)
Good start for FTR and Danielson against Jarrett and Lethal but one good THWACK from Singh swings the needle back the other way. Sonjay Dutt has really be come a great loudmouth at ringside. Jarrett stomping out the ankles of Wheeler. He’s taking his time setting up for the figure four but Wheeler is able to shove him off. Tag to Harwood! Quick packet to Lethal for two but another shot from Singh on the outside sets up a lethal combination. The big man finally tags in. He just starts doing short chokeslams from his knee to Dax as Team Jarrett grabs some chairs and sits back to watch the carnage. FTR has NOTHING for this and can only dodge the giant when he comes running. Danielson finally tagged in and unloads on Jarrett. Singh left to a three on one and there’s kicks coming at him from all sides…..but he doesn’t go down! FTR Trigger doesn’t do it. Danielson with the big knee….The giant is just down to a knee! Lethal Injection! Karen tosses the guitar in but the ref is distracted...Jarrett grabs a chair but accidentally wipes out Singh! Danielson hits the knee on Jarrett. Lethal eats a Shatter Machine. Danielson pins Jeff Jarrett for the win!
Winners: Danielson & FTR
Danielson and FTR own the ring. Wheeler talks about AEW’s debut five years ago and how they would fight and die for this company. He says the entire wrestling world is better off because of AEW. He says they might limp into the PPV tomorrow and Anarchy in the Arena with Darby Allin…..but they are the only ones who will be walking out. Harwood is fighting for all the people who view them as heroes and if they fight AND die tomorrow…..then TOP GUYS OUT.
