ROH Episode 64 Review: “Three Cheers for Three Champs”

After weeks of begging for more champions on the show, we got graced with three of them this week! Now that these were all Proving Grounds Matches against enhancement talent, the matches were going to be quick and to the point, but still, I appreciate the effort. That said, let’s review this week’s episode of ROH TV!

Proving Grounds Match for the ROH Television Championship: Kyle Fletcher vs Mentallo:

Usually, I would complain about the Proving Grounds Matches, but since this was the first time the Television Champion has been on ROH defending his title I will take it. Mentallo has a good showing in his home country, but since this was a Proving Grounds Match we all know this was short and to the point.

Winner: “And Still” Kyle Fletcher

Jay Lethal and Satnam Singh vs Dark Order (Evil Uno and Jon Silver):

I loved seeing Lethal back in ROH and I would not mind seeing this tag team more regularly on ROH. Singh was very impressive and while Silver was trying to choke him out still had the strength to chokeslam Uno. Lethal hit the Lethal injection for the win while Sonjay Dutt

Says this is light work and the ROH roster has not seen anything yet.

Winners: Jay Lethal and Satnam Singh

Iron Savages Promo:

They said that they are going to start taking spots from other teams and they are done with getting passed by. They do not care about what the fans think anymore and they are going to start doing things for themselves and become champions.

Anna Jay vs Tara Zep:

Commentary did a great job talking about how Jay is getting the reps that she needs and she is becoming better week after week. Jay moves to four straight wins as she made Zep tap out.

Winner: Anna Jay

Rachael Ellering vs Skye Blue:

Given the harassment that a fan was giving Blue throughout this match, I was personally shocked they aired it, but it looks like they had muted the crowd so we were not able to hear it. With Julia Hart’s injury and Blue being without her friend for a couple of months, I hope we see Blue in ROH more often. She can always put on entertaining matches and is always there when the company needs her. Despite what had happened this match was awesome and these two delivered. Blue got the win as she moves on to whatever is next for her.

Winner: Skye Blue

Angelico and Serpentico Promo:

Angelico says they have been living a nightmare that they can not wake up from. With Karter and Garrison going after previous injuries and still holding Serpentico’s mask hostage they want revenge. He says this is going to get ugly and this is far from over, I feel like this will lead to a stipulation match in the next couple of weeks.

Action Andretti and Darius Martin vs Jon Silver and Levi Night:

Personally do not know why Dante was not in this match and Andretti was replacing him, but nonetheless. This was one of the longer matches on the episode, which I was surprised by since Night is an enhancement talent, but the crowd was into this one. Andretti and Marin are always entertaining and hopefully will get a tag team title shot or trios championship shot down the line. That’s if the Bang Bang Gang decides to show up on ROH.

Winners: Action Andretti and Darius Martin

Proving Grounds Match for the ROH Tag Team Championship: Undisputed Kingdom (Matt Taven and Mike Bennett) vs London Lightning and Jason Geiger:

We have seen a lot of London Lightning over the last couple of weeks, so I am starting to wonder if he may be signed within the next couple of months. This was a quick one, the champs get it done as they continue to prove why they are one of the best tag teams ROH has to offer.

Winner: “And Still” Undisputed Kingdom (Matt Taven and Mike Bennett)

Proving Grounds Match for the ROH Women’s Championship: Athena vs Nicole Matthews:

The crowd was very behind Matthews as she got a standing ovation when Arkady Unterleidner announced her for this match. This was one of the longer Proving Grounds Matches that Athena has had in her entire title reign which was nice to see especially in the main event for tonight's episode. Athena wins as she goes 52-0 in singles competition, the longest winning streak for any woman in ROH. After the match Athena kept beating Matthews down and Queen Aminata came in to make the save. Although she did not hold up Athen’s title she eyed it as it was in the middle of the ring, almost as if she was foreshadowing what is to come.

Winner: “And Still” Athena

Overall:

I was very excited to see three defending champions on the show, even if all of their matches were around five minutes long. However, a lot of the problems remain. Most of the matches that happened on tonight's episode didn’t mean anything and 95% of the contracted talent faced enhancement talent, which is not growing the ROH brand. There have been no challengers that have been built up to face any of the current champions either, which is disappointing. Oh well, until next week.
