AEW DYNAMITE BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2024-05-15 22:18:00

It is Wednesday and AEW Dynamite is coming to us from the Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett, WA. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Taz, Don Callis, and Tony Schiavone.

Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson vs Kyle Fletcher and Jeff Cobb

The show starts with Mox coming to the ring, and when he gets to ringside, he’s attacked by Fletcher and Cobb. This brings out Bryan sprinting to the ring. Everyone is brawling at ringside. Mox and Bryan get the upper hand and the bell rings as Bryan and Cobb roll into the ring. Mox and Bryan dominate with hard hitting work up until we get to the commercial break.

When we come back we have a countdown clock in the upper right hand corner of the screen letting us know Swerve Strickaldn is facing Brian Cage. Fletcher and Mox and trading blows when we come back, and when Cobb tags in, Mox is able to suplex him and Bryan tags in to lay into him. Fletcher and Cobb are able to get a brief flurry, but in the end, Fletcher takes a psycho knee from Bryan and a Death Rider from Mox. Mox gets the pin and the win.

Winners: Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson

Konosuke Takeshita comes to the ring for a post match beat down, and Claudio Castagnoli hits the ring with a pry bar to drive them off.

For the most part, it was a glorified squash match to build up Mox and Bryan. A shame they brought in Cobb from New Japan and he got to do so little. He’s a great worker, and I would have liked to see him get some US TV time showing what he can do.

Adam Copeland (TNT Champion) vs ????

Brody King and Buddy Matthews attack Adam right after he comes out of the tunnel, and Malakai Black follows them as they drag Adam down to the ring and toss him in. The House of Black gets into the ring with chairs.

Black says he doesn’t understand why Adam keeps up the facade of what he thinks he is. The crowd tells him to shut the $#@* up. Black then tells Buddy to take Adam's wedding ring. Buddy hands it to Black, who puts it in his pocket. Adam is completely knocked out. Kyle O’Reilly comes to the ring and gets shut down by King, and is tossed from the ring. Black hits the spin kick.

The House fo Black then runs into Adam in the corner who had chairs set up around him.

They then show the injury of Eddie Kingston at New Japan on Saturday.

We then see The Elite in the back who put over all the people they have taken out over the last three weeks.

Renee Paquette is with FTR and they say that while they are down one person, they don’t care. They will fight only if one of them is left, but they have a fourth man if need be.

Young Bucks (Matthew and Nicholas Jackson) AEW Tag Team Champions vs Christopher Daniels and Matt Sydal in an Eliminator match.

Jack Perry joins commentary to run everyone down.

I like Sydal and Danielson, but they have no chance in this one. They dominate until Nicholas is able to get the blind tag right before the commercial.  The ref says they got the tag, but the announcers saw what we saw, that they missed the tag with Taz saying “I don’t think they got the tag.”  Sydal is the babyface in peril through the break, and Daneils gets the hot tag and runs wild.

The Bucks win with the TK Driver on Daniels for the pin and the win.

Winners: The Young Bucks.

After the match, Nicholas cuts a promo on how Daniels shouldn't have spoke up to them, and they fire Daniels. They then have security escort him from the building. At the announcer’s desk, Perry pours his drink on Schiavone’s head as he leaves.

In the back, Renee is with Toni Storm, Mariah May, and Luther and she tells Toni everyone is banned from ringside for her match. She says she is feeling motherly, and will defend May. She then explains how she will beat Serena Deeb.  Another great promo from Storm.

We then get Malakai Black in the dark talking about how Adam Copeland’s wedding ring is a symbol of everything holding him back. He then says that the barbed wire cage match shows there is still a part of Adam that he knows. He accepts the match and says if he wins, Adam has to bend the knee to the House of Black.

Hook vs the already in the ring Sebastion Wolfe

Well.  That was fast.

Winner: Hook

Hook grabs a mic and says he isn’t here for this. He’s here to see Chris Jericho and his FTW Championship.

Jericho obliges him and brings along Big Bill.

Jericho comes to the ring and does his clueless smarmy gimmick, and Hook says he wants the spotlight on Jericho getting his ass beat for the FTW title.  Jericho says he’d love to see it too, but this is not a fighting moment. He says it’s a teaching moment and he wants to teach Hook that the world doesn’t revolve around him. He then tells Hook that you have to climb up the ladder, and on Saturday Hook will be in a qualification match.

Hook says it sounds great. He then asks Jericho what else sounds great and pops him with the mic. Jericho and Bill attack Hook, and this brings Shibata from the back and he chases them off.

We then get a promo from Swerve Strickland in the back who says that he closed the door on the Mogul Embassy and tonight he beats Brian Cage.

Swerve Strickland (AEW World Champion) vs Brian Cage in a Eliminator match

Much like the other matches tonight, this is a spotlight for Swerve, and Cage plays a supporting role, getting some offense here and there. The match is well worked, with Swerve focusing on Cage’s arm every chance he gets. Swerve gets some flashy moves toward the end of the match to fire up the crowd, and the crowd is totally in Swerve’s hand the whole time. He also gets some moves showing his strength with Cage, like a stalling brain buster.

Swerve is able to get the arm pop on the arm he’d been working on through the match and follows with the House Call for the pin and the win.

Winner: Swerve Strickland.

Has anyone ever won an Eliminator match?

Swerve pulls chairs out from under the ring and goes after Cage with one.

This draws out Christian Cage and Momma Wayne. This allows Nick Wayne to give Swerve a low blow from behind. Killswitch then shows and holds Swerve as Nick nails Swerve with a picture of Swerve’s family. Swerve is busted open, and Killswitch holds him on on the second rope.  Cage then says that Swerve embarrassed Nick by attacking him in his gym. He then says tonight he takes his blood, and next week, he takes his title.

In the back, Renee is with Hook and Shibata. Hook says he will do anything to get his title back. Shibata says he wants a chance at Jericho as well.  Samoa Joe shows up and says Hook is falling into Jericho’s trap, and Hook says he’ll fight him again, no problem.

After Joe leaves, Shibata says Joe is too big to wear a flower pattern.

Toni Storm (AEW Women’s Champion) vs Harley Cameron

The title isn’t on the line for this match, but this is yet another mismatch.

Storm dominates the opening of the match until Deeb comes out onto the stage with her flag, and this distracts Storm so that Cameron is able to get the upper hand going into the commercial. When we come back from break, Storm starts hitting suplexes. Cameron gets a pair of big kicks for a near fall, and then they move to a series of near falls. Storm is able to get Storm Zero for the pin and the win.

Winner: Toni Storm

Arkady Aura is with The Undisputed Kingdom and Will Ospreay. Ospreay says it’s pathetic letting Shane Taylor do their dirty work. He then accuses Roderick Strong of playing mind games trying to get him to break his ban on the Tiger Driver.

Strong says he has no respect for Ospreay because has so much talent, but he’s a little child. He then says he worked for hsi title and overcame a traumatic neck injury.

Ospreay says he will take his title and get revenge for all the years Strong talked him down.

We then have the thing I hate more than anything other than the Paradise Lock.  A Contract Signing.

This one is between Mercedes Mone and Willow Nightingale.

Willow gives a promo about how she is the face of TBS and her smile is how she shows she can make it through the gloom and doom. So, she will not let Mone just walk into AEW and take that away from her.

Mone then puts herself over saying she was breaking down doors when Willow was still training.

Willow says the last time they met, she walked out champion and Mone didn’t walk out at all.  Mone slaps her and Willow puts her through the table.

Kazuchika Okada (AEW Continental Champion) vs Dax Harwood

We get Renee talking about the match right before Dax is introduced.  Cool idea, taken from things like NFL coverage.

No one is allowed at ringside as the match is under Continental rules. We are also told to expect a significant overrun, and the match starts at 8:55 CT

They start out with a hard hitting match where both men work stiff and tight. Dax works an old school southern style and Okada’s New Japan style matches with that well.  This is one of those matches where, if they had 45 minutes, they could pull out a classic.  When they come back from the first commercial break, they have moved to Big Moves and then the recovery from those big moves.

Okada, through the match, not only has great facial expressions to make the match seem more dramatic, but he knows how to make sure the camera captures it. He really shines when they get a tight shot on him, smirking when he is on top, and worried when Dax is getting offense in.

When they move to near falls, everything is crisp and draws the crowd in.  They work hard on the little things, such as Okada on his shoulder when Dax gets the sharpshooter so as to get the ropes easily.  In the end, Okada gets a low blow and follows with a rainmaker.

Winner and still AEW Continental Champion: Kazuchika Okada

The Elite hit the ring as does Cash Wheeler and Bryan Danielson. All of the men are fighting and we hear Darby Allin’s music and he hits the ring with a chair and turns the time for Dax’s team.  We are told that Darby is taking Kingstons’ place and they take the ring and start tall as we are out of time!
