ROH Episode 53 Review: For the Love of the Boys
In just five weeks ROH will have their first pay-per-view of the year. Unfortunately, they are still having a problem keeping any of the champions on the show. The only champion that shows up weekly seems to be Athena, who has carried the show on her back for a year. Since we are five weeks away I am hoping that the next five episodes will integrate some of the other champions that we have on the ROH brand.
Taya Valkyrie vs Queen Aminata:
This match should have been the finals since both women were undefeated going into the tournament. Regardless, this match was awesome. I feel like I am going to have to change my pick to Aminata after this match, it seems like ROH is heavily invested in her and she has a great shot to go all of the way.
Winner: Queen Aminata
Mike Sydal vs Lee Johnson:
For me, this match went a little too long, especially since Johnson has been on an undefeated streak in the last couple of weeks. I think Sydal would be a great addition to the ROH roster in the future and I would love to see more of him. Johnson gets the win and continues the momentum as he is currently on a five-match winning streak.
Winner: Lee Johnson
Blake Christian vs Komander:
This was a fun match. Komander seems to be getting a lot of shine in ROH, so maybe this can lead to a title shot down the line. Especially since he like Lee Johnson also is on a five-match winning streak. Seeing Blake Christian on ROH is always a treat as well and he continues to show out every time.
Winner: Komander
Emergency M.E.M.:
Unlike the previous M.E.M’s this one took place in front of the live crowd and not backstage. Athena says that she has read online that people think the family is drifting apart and she wants to address the problem. She yells at Nair for following everyone around backstage and says that her job is to be with Starkz and Athena at all times. Athena says that last week Rose took her to the limit, but she was able to win. Starkz interrupts and says that last week she won her first-round match against Robyn Renegade. Athena says that Robyn is not a real competition and she is not going to be able to beat Diamante without Athena. Starkz says she is going to win the whole thing, and Athena says if she does not win the tournament she is going to be in trouble. Athena says that 2024 is the year of the family, but most importantly the year of Athena. Athena says this is her show where she makes the rules and if no one likes that then they can step up and get out.
Taiji Ishimori vs Jacoby Watts:
This was my first time seeing Ishimori in a match and I was impressed. This match was quick and Ishimori was able to get the job done and beat Watts.
Winner: Taiji Ishimori
Queen Aminata Promo:
Aminata said she told us she was going to beat Valkryie and she did it. She says that she does not feel great and she is sore, but this tournament started with 16 women and there must be a winner and she will be the one to become the new ROH Women’s Television Champion.
The Winner Gets Custody of The Boys: Johnny TV vs Dalton Castle:
During Castle’s entrance, the Iron Savages came out and said they had a surprise for him. They handed over the special sauce as Castle chugged it and became the happy Castle that we all know and love. He said that he never wanted anything more in his life as he got ready for his match against Johnny TV. Aubrey Edwards raised the Boy's hands before the match started and said this is a custody battle showing them off like any referee would before a title match. Halfway through the match Valkryie and Johnny TV took a selfie with the Boys to show off what their new family photos could look like if Johnny can win this match. With multiple interferences from Valkryie Johnny TV was able to take advantage and get the win. Castle was beside himself and had a mental breakdown in the ring. Johnny and Valkryie grabbed the Boys by the ankle and dragged them to the back. Depressing day for all the original ROH fans out there.
Winner: Johnny TV
Overall:
This was the most nothing episode of ROH in the 53 episodes that they have aired on Honorclub. A lot of these matches were put together at random besides the main event and the opener and the crowd was quiet. In Athena’s promo segment, she tried to get the crowd invested, but sadly they were not. Hopefully, next week is better.
