It is Wednesday and this week Dynamite is at the Propst Arena at Von Braun Center in Huntsville, AL. The commentary team is Tony Schiavone, Taz, and Excalibur.
And it’s Sting last Dynamite.
Adam Page comes to the ring on a crutch. He says that when AEW started, it was a goal for him, and winning the world title was the biggest opportunity of his life. That’s why it hurts so much to be dealing with…this. He says that he felt the title should be in a singles match, but he didn’t think it would be Joe and Swerve, and he will not be able to compete.
The commentary team don’t sound all that sorry.
Swerve comes to the ring with a mic. Swerve says the last 6 months they went to war, but he didn’t expect this to happen. He says he targeted Page because of all he accomplished and he respected him. He says that you can’t escape fate and his destiny is to win the title Sunday, and this brings out Samoa Joe.
Joe stays on the stage and says two of the most bitter enemies are trying to hug it out. He says a lot of lies are being told, and he will tell the truth. He says they hated each other because they were scared of him. He says they are hungry accomplished wrestlers, but the only reason they are hungry is because he is starving them. And no matter who he fights at Revolution, he will whip their asses.
Swerve says he is the same man who did the bad things he did over the last six months and he will take the title and Joe won’t know what to do with himself. Page then attacks Swerve from behind with his crutch, and he’s not injured at all. Page leaves Swerve laying and Joe goes to the back.
We then get video of the Young Bucks showing up earlier today. They stop to chat with Renee Paquette and she asks about the meeting with Ric Flair and they say the meeting went great and that’s all they will say. Matthew says they want to see Sting and conduct his exit interview and they show they have white baseball bats.
Bryan Danielson, Clauldiop Castagnoli, and Jon Moxley vs FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) and Eddie Kingston
Danielson and Kingston start off and take time to lock up, and instead, Daneilson tags in Claudio. It then turns into a series of tags to give us different pairings, and each pairing works differently. They’ve done a good job at having these two teams hate each other with different permutations. This match is effectively an appetizer for the matches these teams have on Sunday. They give them a LONG time (three segments) and ti’s well worth it, since they have been clashing in different configurations for the last few months and it always works.
The story they tell is that the Blackpool Combat Club is able to get the upper hand and FTR has to pull out all the stops to keep from being beaten. We get a lot of great faceoffs, and in the third segment, Kingston gets a huge spotlight when he’s the only member of his team able to fight. The BCC has to triple team him to get a near fall.
The referee eventually just gives up and no one tags in or out, just all six men in the ring fighting. In the end, Danielson is able to lock on a leg based sleeper hold and Kingston goes out.
Winners: Bryan Danielson, Claudio Castagnoli, and Jon Moxley
The match is an old school idea to build what for the PPV, and all six men put on a great match.
In the back, Renee is with Chris Jericho and she asks about his match with Atlantis Jr. He talks about his history in Mexico and he says he is repaying the favor his father taught him at the beginning of his career by teaching him about wrestling.
Tony Schiavone is in the ring to speak to Will Ospreay. He comes to the ring alone, high fiving fans. Ospreay gives Tony a side hug. He tal;ks about his flight and his lost bags and that he is in AEW for full time work. He goes over his victories in AEW in the past and he’s ready to roll with the Callis Family.
This invokes the Chord of Doom, and Don Callis, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Konosuke Takeshita come to the ring. Callus says there is nothing he likes more than a Don Callis Family Reunion as the crowd boos him out of the building. He puts over the Don Callis Family and then takes credit for Ospreay’s wins. He then puts over the match between Ospreay and Takeshita at Revolution and they shake hands, but Takeshita doesn’t let go and they go face to face with Callis saying how great it is.
In the back Renee is with Eddie Kingston and before he can say anything about his match with Danielson, the Bucks show up looking for Sting. The Bucks do their bit about Nick threatening and Matt saying his brother is a hothead. Matt then says Eddie is a champion, and he should dress better. They muse starting a dress code and keep looking for Sting.
Orange Cassidy (AEW International Champion) vs Nick Wayne w/Christian Cage, Killswitch, and Momma Wayne
Quick, someone check on Orange Cassidy’s father to see if he's alive!
They start with a series of takedowns and then move to Wayne about to counter a lot of what Cassidy does. The story of the match is that Cassidy has been beaten down by his feud with the Undisputed Kingdom, and he’s not working with his usual speed. Cage gets caught sweeping Cassidy’s leg, and the ref tells Cage and everyone else they are outta here!
After a commercial break, Cassidy is powering up, but selling his back. As Cassidy has taken over, Matt Taven and Mike Bennett show up at ringside, but we also get Rocky Romero and Trent Beretta. Attack them. We then get Daniel Garcia at ringside and Cassidy gets the Orange Punch for the pin and the win.
Winner and still AEW International Champion: Orange Cassidy
Roderick Strong hits the ring and attacks Cassidy, but Romero and Beretta drive him off and the heels head to the back. Kind of a by the numbers way to build heat for the PPV as well. Tonight’s show isn’t doing anything new, just leaning on fairly standard build ideas for a show. I don't think it will convince anyone who isn’t already predisposed to buy the show.
Renee is with the Bang Bang Scissor Gang Billy Gunn asks why Max Caster screwed up his rap. He asks if anyone noticed and they will be in action Saturday. This story is going nowhere, and moving at a snail’s pace to get there. I don’t think anyone has lost as much momentum as The Acclaimed over the last three months.
Skye Blue w/Julia Hart vs Kris Statlander w/Willow Nightingale and Stokely Hathaway
Statlander starts by just out powering Blue. While these teams have been feuding, Statlander is dominating with Blue getting a flurry here and there. Blue’s offense mostly occurs durign picture in picture and Statlander takes over as we return to full screen. The announcers remind us that Julia Hart, who is at ringside, took the TBS title from Statlander.
That, my friends, is what they call foreshadowing. Ham fisted, but foreshadowing.
When Blue is on the outside, Hart and Nightingale face off before Statlander and Blue brawl again. Blue gets a destroyer and a two count. When Statlander starts to take over, Hathaway offers Statlander a chain that the referee sees. As the ref is admonishing him, Hart nails Statlander with the belt and Blue gets the Code Blue for the pin and the win.
Winner: Skye Blue
We see the Bucks are still looking for Sting and they get to hsi locker room. Why they didn’t go there at the start of the search is my question that will be ignored. They go into the locker room and it is empty except for all of the baseball bats hanging from the ceiling.
Chris Jericho vs Atlantis Jr. w/Atlantis
Jericho comes out as Lionheart. Odd to realize he doesn’t have a match at the PPV unless they announce one in the next couple of days.
Jr. tries for a handshake and instead, Jericho starts throwing hands. Jericho starts bumping all around the ring for Jr and then starts to go heel for the match as Jericho goes for the mask. Atlantis and Jericho have words after that, and we then go to the brawl on the outside. When they come back from picture in picture, we get a series of near falls. Jericho locks on the Walls and when Jr gets a fingertip away from the ropes, Jericho pulls him back to the middle fo the ring.
At this point, Atlantis throws in the towel, which is why he brought a towel to the ring in the first place.
Winner: Chris Jericho
Jericho and Atlantis help Jr to his feet and celebrate in the middle of the ring. A spotlight for Jr, but I have to say that he didn’t impress me more than the other CMLL luchadores that have been in AEW lately.
Excalibur has to run down the next three upcoming shows.
We’re at 8:55 and it’s time for Sting? No, the Young Bucks come to the ring.
Before they can say anything, Darby Allin attacks them, and they are able to double team him. They take the bats to Darby in the ring and hit him with the EVP Trigger on Darby. The Bucks wave for someone from the back, and Ric Flair shows.
When Flair gets to the ring, he throws punches, but Nick hits Flair with a low blow.
How long will Sting let his friends get beat up?
Just long enough for the Bucks to put the boots to Flair. Sting music hits and the Bucks head up the ramp for Sting, who rappels down from the ceiling behind them. The Bucks slowly turn and Matt tries to beg off. Sting goes to work on them with bats and Darby hits a coffin drop. Sting gets a scorpion death drop on Nick in the middle of the ring. Dynamite ends with Sting standing tall in the middle of the ring.
