THE NXT VENGEANCE TIP SHEET

By Dave Scherer, Mike Johnson and Richard Trionfo on 2024-02-04 09:57:00

WWE NXT will present Vengeance Day in Clarksville, TN tonight.  Here are our takes on what will happen.

NXT Men's Champion Ilja Dragunov vs. Trick Williams

Dave: Trick has been rolling lately and this should be a good showcase for him.  It's nowhere near time for Ilja to lose the belt and with the tag match earlier in the show, that can be part of the story that they tell when Trick looks great but comes up a bit short.

Mike: I am really looking forward to this!  Williams has been one of the most fun aspects of NXT in recent months.  Dragunov is great in the ring and I suspect this will be a major moment for Williams.  That said, I think he will get more out of the moment with a sympathetic loss after fighting the good fight.  His future is set in stone as a future top guy but he doesn't need the wind here.

Rich:  What condition will Trick be in for this match after the Dusty Finals?  The story of this match is whether Trick can overcome having to wrestle twice on the same night to get the NXT Title.  I was not a fan of the idea that it is some conspiracy by Ilja to force him into two matches when Hayes was the one who got them into the Dusty Classic, and they could have lost one of the matches in the tournament to make it easier for Trick.  This should be a very good match and the time that Trick moves to the next level as the new NXT Champion.  What is next for Ilja?

NXT Women's Champion Lyra Valkyria vs. Roxanne Perez.

Dave: Perez doesn't need the Title back, at least not at this time.  The play here is to give the new champ a quality win.

Mike: I love Perez's work but there's no need for her to win the title here.  This should be about continuing to set up Lyra as the top women's champion.  This should be fun.

Rich:  Does Roxanne really need to win the women's title?  She has proven herself on the brand and should be ready for a move to the main roster.  I think Lyra has done a good job as champion and I feel that she should retain the title.  I am worried that Tatum Paxley will get involved and if she helps Lyra win, Lyra will get angry at her and Tatum will take it out on Lyra.  This could leave the door open for Lola Vice to come out and claim her title match as the Breakout Tournament winner.

Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes vs. Baron Corbin and Bron Breakker in the Finals of the 2024 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Dave: As  I said above, I think this match will "take something out" of Trick for the Title bout.  I also think he and Melo win to take a bit of the sting off of losing later.  Bron is gone so it makes no sense for him to win.

Mike: I suspect Trick and Carmelo end up on top here.  Bron is main roster bound and does not need the win.  I wonder if he and Baron end up splitting by the end.

Rich:  This is the first of two matches for Trick Williams on the show and his chance to prove that he is the rising star that so many feel that he is.  Corbin and Bron have worked well as a team and I can see either team win this and it would make for a good tag title match in the future.  The story of this match is more about how Trick will come out of this match for his title match against Ilja.  Trick will have a good night by the time Vengeance Day ends, but I don't think he wins both of his matches.  Bron and Baron win to build the intrigue if we will finally find out who it was that attacked Trick (I still think it was Hayes).

NXT North American Champion Oba Femi vs. Dragon Lee.

Rich:  To me, the story of this match is not about who wins, but how Oba Femi looks.  The match where he cashed in was only a minute.  I was impressed with Femi's work in the Breakout tournament.  Dragon Lee is a great talent and I think this match is for him to elevate Femi more than win the title back since he appears to be part of the LWO/Legado feud on Smackdown.  I hope Femi has a good performance as he retains the title and that it gets about 10 minutes to show what he can do.

Mike: Richard nails this dead on.  This is the big moment for Femi to show what he can bring to the table.  He's going to retain but the story is how he looks in and coming out of the bout.

Dave: What Mike and Rich said (you can tell who did this last!).

The Family (Tony D'Angelo, Channing 'Stacks' Lorenzo, and Adrianna Rizzo) vs. OTM (Lucien Price, Bronco Nima, and Jaida Parker).

Mike: Always bet on Family.

Rich:  The feud over the tag titles expands to turn into a mixed tag match.  I always have issues when there is a mixed tag match and any tag ruins momentum because the person being worked over has to leave the match too.  I would assume this match will lead to another opportunity for Nima and Price in the future.  I could see OTM get the victory in this match to up the ante for the titles.

Dave: I guess I am the tiebreaker here.  I will go with OTM.

Joe Gacy vs. Dijak in a No DQ Match

Dave: I hope that this is the time Dijak finally gets the chance to show what he can do.  I like Gacy too, but Dijak has been really misused by the company.

Mike:  They are really trying to set up Dijak for success with this and I hope it works.  I expect a fun brawl.

Rich:  This match was set up at the end of this week's episode of NXT when the continuing issues between these two men culminated with Dijak dropping Gacy off a truck into a dumpster.  Gacy has been annoying Dijak over the last few weeks as Gacy tries to figure out who he is supposed to be after the end of The Schism.  I am excited for this match, but the story does not support my enjoyment.   Gacy should probably win, but I think Dijak gets so pissed off at what Gacy has done that he will take out his anger on Gacy to get the win.
