ROH Episode 49 Review: “Nyla Rose is the Chaos”
A lot of New Japan crossover on this week's episode which was nice to see. This week also saw a lot more focus on that tournament to crown the first-ever ROH Women’s Television Tournament as the brackets are set to be revealed very soon. Besides all of that, how did the rest of the episode do? Let’s review and find out!
Dalton Castle Promo:
ROH starts with Lexy Nair finding Dalton Castle and he says that he is going to smash Johnny TV’s head in. He confronts Johnny and Taya Valkyrie with a garbage can ready to fight. Jerry Lynn breaks it up and says that Dalton’s “friend” will have a match next week on ROH. Johnny comes up with the idea that Dalton’s friend can wrestle him, and Jerry Lynn agrees. Taya and Johnny leave the room by saying that Castle’s suit stinks and he needs to wash it.
Angelico and Serpentico vs Kameron and Allen Russell:
We got the black-masked Serpentico since Garrison and Karter stole his mask last week. This match got a lot of time and The Russells had a great showing within the match, I would not mind seeing them again on ROH programming. Unfortunately, it was not enough to top the team of Serpentico and Angelico who got the win. After the match, Karter, Garrison, and Kanellis came out to confront Angelico and Serpentico. Karter was wearing Serpentico’s mask as Serpentico and Angelico chased Karter and Garrison to the back.
Winner: Angelico and Serpentico
Nyla Rose vs Emmy Camacho:
It's the first squash match of the night… sigh.
Winner: Nyla Rose
Iron Savages (Boulder, Bronson, and Jacked Jameson) vs KM, Braxton Hunter, and Jon Cruz:
Since they are constantly using Iron Savages on TV every week, I have to assume at one point or another they will get either a tag team title match or a six-man title match. Regardless, the crowd was happy to see Iron Savages as they knew how to get the crowd going. They crushed their opponents in Iron Savage fashion.
Winners: Iron Savages (Boulder, Bronson, and Jacked Jameson)
Ethan Page Promo:
Page says that he feels that he is on the right path to winning gold, but everyone in his house does not believe that. He says that his daughter designed his gear and everything he is doing in ROH matters so he can continue his momentum and defeat Kyle Fletcher for the Television Title. He says he is going to continue to wear that gear until he wins gold so he will not go home empty-handed again.
Aaron Solo vs Dalton Castle:
Castle came out on a cart that the boys had to push him out on. He woke up in the middle of his entrance as he walked down to the ring very slowly. Commentary continuously brought up the fact that Castle’s chest was not shaved, but they could tell that he had been working out and going to the gym. Like most of the Castle matches that have happened since the start of his mental breakdown, Solo dominated most of the match before Castle found an opportunity to capitalize. Castle gets the win while yelling into the camera that Johnny TV’s face is going to get smashed.
Winner: Dalton Castle
Nyla Rose Promo:
Rose asks where Starkz is and Nair says she is busy getting ready for her match. Rose says that she continues to ask for Starkz and she is being a bad minion and is never around. Rose says that next week since ROH is going to be in Athena’s hometown Nair needs to make sure that Athena and Starkz are there to confront Athena. The promo ends with Rose saying she is the chaos, which I can confirm.
ROH Tag Team Championship Proving Grounds Match: Mike Bennett and Matt Taven vs Fred Rosser and Tom Lawlor:
So happy to see Rosser and Lawlor teaming up on ROH TV! They almost were able to reach the 10-minute time limit which would have allowed them to challenge The Kingdom to a title match. This match was fun, and I love that we are seeing more and more people from New Japan on ROH TV. Bennett and Taven get the win and prevent Rosser and Lawlor from getting a title match down the line.
Winners: Matt Taven and Mike Bennett
Ethan Page vs Slim J:
ROH Ethan Page is on a different level. He brought a lot out of Slim J and both of them were able to have a fun decent match. Page gets the win as he has his eyes set on the ROH Television Championship, and I feel sorry for anyone who stands in her way.
Winner: Ethan Page
Billie Starkz vs Killa Kate:
Starkz used her aggressive side to get the win in this one. Starkz got the win in a highly competitive match as she looks towards the ROH Women's Television Championship Tournament which will be starting in a couple of weeks.
Winner: Billie Starkz
Rachael Ellering Promo:
She says that the brackets are going to be revealed soon and she is ready for this tournament. Leyla Hirsch says that they are used to competition and whatever happens they will be ready. Ellering says it would be crazy if they wrestled each other in the first round. Both of them give each other words of encouragement as they tell ROH to release the brackets.
The Infantry (Carlie Bravo and Shawn Dean) vs The Righteous (Vincent and Dutch):
This might as well have been a number one contenders match for the ROH Tag Team Championships. One thing I will never understand however is why Jake Roberts never comes out with The Righteous when they paired them up as well as Lance Archer. The Infantry is such a great team and I have such high hopes for them this year, as I hope they win tag team gold. The Righteous got the win in this one, but I hope they run this match back because this was a good one.
Winners: The Righteous (Vincent and Dutch)
Red Velvet Promo:
Velvet says that she is confident and full of momentum. She says that all eyes are on the ROH Women’s Division, but after tonight when she wins the co-main event, all eyes will be on Red Velvet.
Queen Aminata vs Reiza Clark:
Another squash match… Expect Aminata to be a huge threat in the ROH Women’s Television Championship Tournament.
Winner: Queen Aminata
Gringo Loco vs Bad Dude Tito:
Yay for the New Japan crossover! In my opinion, this should have been the main event just because of how great this match was. I would love to see more of Tito within ROH especially since he won this match over Gringo who has been appearing on ROH more frequently.
Winner: Bad Dude Tito
Dalton Castle Promo:
Nair says that she is not Castle’s babysitter and yells at him for being in a mop bucket. Castle apologizes for what happened earlier in the night and says Jerry Lynn is the worst. Castle says that no one will know who his friend is next week as he is new to wrestling. Castle says we have to wait for next week as he falls into the production cart and Nair screams at him for not wearing shoes.
Four Corner Survival: Trish Adora vs Diamante vs Red Velvet vs Kiera Hogan:
All similar styles in this one, and I am thrilled the women got to be the co-main event on this episode. This match was on the shorter side which I was a little disappointed by, but I do believe the right women won. All four women will be in that tournament in a couple weeks and I can not wait to see who is going to come out of that tournament on top.
Winner: Red Velvet
Jack Cartwheel vs Alex Zayne vs Blake Chrisitan vs Lee Johnson:
This was a fast-paced match and at times it seemed a bit rushed as they were pressing for time in this one. All four of these men were able to hit all of their spots, but Johnson was able to get the win in the main event! If it wasn’t for Page I would say he should be challenging Fletcher for the TV title. Only time will tell what happens for Lee Johnson.
Winner: Lee Johnson
Overall:
I thought the wrestling on this week's episode was incredible. Some matches went a little too long, which is why this episode was almost two hours long. However, it seems as if ROH is building their mid-card division since two of the last matches were four-corner survival. Now if only someone can find the heavyweight champion so he can show up on the TV Show…
