CM Punk opened tonight's episode of Monday Night Raw, announcing that he had been injured in the Men's Royal Rumble this past Saturday, tearing his right tricep. PWInsider.com had reported the injury earlier this afternoon.
After coming to the ring and staring at the Wrestlemania 40 sign, Punk said that he felt he was close. He said that he wanted to congratulate Cody Rhodes. He hoped Rhodes goes to Philadelphia and finishes his story.
Punk said that while he came close, close doesn't count in this business. He's never believed in luck, but feels a little unlucky. He announced the tear and said that he hoped he could tape it and make it through Elimination Chamber and Wrestlemania, but it's not in the cards. He said he doesn't want to be sorry for him, because his friend Chad Gilbert, who is battling cancer, who Punk sits with when he's going through chemotherapy yet always has a great attitude as he's in a real battle. Punk said compared to his friend's fight, this injury is just a flesh wound.
Punk said when he says he's the Best in the World, that doesn't mean he always wins. He noted when he fought in UFC, he didn't do great but he was asked to do it and agreed because it scared the hell out of him. Returning after a decade scared the hell out of him. Wrestlemania scares the hell out of him. He said that Wrestlemania 40 isn't in the cards for him, but there's always next year.
