ROH Episode 44 Review: All Eyes on 2024
Our last ROH episode of 2023 is officially in the books. Although the first nine months of ROH TV have been rocky, to say the least, I am optimistic for 2024, and tonight’s show proved that the future is bright for ROH TV.
Nyla Rose vs Alejandra Lion:
Rose dominated the entire match as this was a squash match.
Winner: Nyla Rose
Peter Avalon vs Zak Knight:
This was my first time seeing Knight wrestle and I was impressed. He quickly got over with the crowd and brought the fight to Avalon. Knight delivered a knockout punch to Avalon to get the win and I hope we see more of him within ROH, I think he would be a great fit.
Winner: Zak Knight
ROH Women’s TV Championship Promo:
Leyla Hirsch, Lady Frost, Kiera Hogan, Rachael Ellering, and Billie Starkz all hype up the new title as they all give a reason as to why they will make history and become the first ROH Women’s Champion. To me, this has to go to Leyla Hirsch she has been killing it in ROH and her with that title just makes all of the sense in the world.
MEM:
Athena says that everything just feels right. She says that Starkz is going to be the ROH Women’s TV champion and she is going to make history. Athena gives her the chance to cut her own promo as she and Nair hype her up in the background. These are always fantastic and somehow they keep getting better.
Iron Savages (Bronson and Boulder) and Jacked Jameson vs Bryan Keith and The Von Erichs (Marshall and Ross Von Erich):
Very happy to see the Von Erichs on ROH again! So, it looks like the Iron Savages are trying this new thing with “Titty City” where one Iron Savage member shoved their opponent into the other's “tits”... the crowd seemed to love it, so I guess expect this more. This was a fun six-man tag. Although Iron Savages had the strength and power advantage in this match, the Iron Claw was able to help the Von Erichs and Keith get the big win.
Winners: Bryan Keith and The Von Erichs (Marshall and Ross Von Erich)
Griff Garrison and Cole Karter Promo:
Karter is upset that Kanellis is not here and says that they are her real kids too she should be spending time with them. Serpentico and Angelico come and blame them for the loss they suffered last week in the eight-man tag. Garrison challenges them to a tag team match next week.
Lady Frost, Trish Adora, and Kiera Hogan vs The Renegades (Charlette and Robyn Renegade) and Taya Valkyrie:
I am under the assumption that everyone in this match besides the Renegades will be involved in the tournament to crown the ROH Women’s TV Champion. This was an exciting matchup. If there is one thing that ROH has done right this year is elevate the women’s division as there is such an in-depth roster that they can have two champions. Valkyrie gets the win as they remain undefeated in ROH competition.
Winners: The Renegades (Charlette and Robyn Renegade) and Taya Valkyrie
Leyla Hirsch and Rachael Ellering Promo:
Hirsch says she can not worry about Kanellis as she only wants the spotlight. Ellering says that they both have their eyes on the ROH Women’s TV Championship. Mercedes Martinez and Diamante interrupt and say that if they want competition it is right here. Hirsch makes fun of them for losing the street fight a couple of weeks ago, as Martinez says they are ready for a fight. I am going to assume this match will be next week.
Tony Nese vs Joey Hyder:
Before the match begins Sterling cuts a promo saying that although Nese lost the I Quit match, Nese still came to ROH to wrestle tonight. Sterling also says that since the crowd was happy that Nese lost they are no longer going to help anyone and this is going to be the rebirth of Tony Nese. Although Hyder got in some offense, Nese dominated and got the win.
Winner: Tony Nese
Vertvixen vs Billie Starkz:
The more aggressive side of Starkz showed in this match as she yelled at the referee a couple of times just like her mentor does. Vertvixen had a great showing throughout the match, and I believe she will be a big player in the women’s division in 2024. Starkz took to the sky to hit the Swanton Bomb to get the win. Starkz and Vertvixen shake hands until Starkz beats her up at the end while shouting into the camera Merry Christmas.
Winner: Billie Starkz
Kyle Fletcher Promo:
Fletcher says that this title has now become the most important championship in ROH because he is holding it. He claims that he is a star in the making and people need to start realizing the full potential of Kyle Fletcher. He lays out an open challenge for next week as Willie Mack answers the challenge. Mack says that although Fletcher claims he is a star in the making, Mack is going to put a stop to that as he is going to take the title from him next week.
Johnny TV vs Ethan Page:
This was a great match before the end-of-match shenanigans. Johnny was going to put this match away before Dalton Castle’s music hit. Castle and Johnny make eye contact which leads Page to take advantage to get the win. The episode ends with Page celebrating his huge win as he hopes to win gold in 2024
Winner: Ethan Page
Overall:
This is the pacing I love to see on ROH. Not too many backstage promos and awesome wrestling. The one thing I loved about this episode is that it mostly focused on the new ROH Women’s TV title which emphasized the importance of that new title. I hope that they keep this pacing for future episodes because this works very well.
