COMPLETE AEW DYNAMITE BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2023-12-06 20:45:00

It is Wednesday and this week Dynamite is at the Bell Centre in Montreal QC, Canada. The commentary team is Tony Schiavone, Taz, and Excalibur.

Jon Moxley vs Rush in a Continental Classic match

I would imagine both of these guys are happy to have a match where they just get to beat the tar out of each other, since they both work stiff. It’s not long before they are fighting through the crowd, and we are told that if they are both counter out, they each get one point. When they return to the ring, Mox is getting cheered and they just keep throwing haymakers at each other.

When they come back from picture in picture, they move to finishing moves after the first 10 minute just being a show of how much these two like to hit each other. They then go back to just throwing hands in the middle of the ring. Mox is able to lock on a sleeper hold and Ru8sh goes out.

Winner and getting three points in the tournament: Jon Moxley

This was just a fight, and while there was no feud between the two, it does show what both of them LIKE to do in a match.

We then get a video package showing the history between Jay White and Jay Lethal.

Renee Paquette is on the stage and Roderick Strong and The Kingdom come out to speak. Roddy says that MJF will put his dagger in the heart of Samoa Joe tonight. He also yells everyone’s first name.  He then is able to get up and says he will no longer deal  with the consequences of his decisions and gets rid of his wheelchair.

Renee is outside MJF’s dressing room, and Adam Page walks by and says that it took three people to beat him in a Texas Death Match, but at Fell Gear, he took something from him, and they are bound by something bigger than both of them, and he’s not done with him.

Ugh. That’s one feud I don’t ever want revisited.  No matter what Page does, the crowd always cheers for Swerve, so he needs to figure out how to be a babyface again.

MJF comes out of his dressing room and says he was impressed that Page and Swerve worked so hard to give each other STDs. They then cut each other down back and forth. MJF then says he thinks Page is the Devil. Page says it’s probably MJF. Samoa Joe then gets between them before they come to blows.

Mark Briscoe vs Swerve Strickland in a Continental Classic Match

It didn’t come across on TV last week, but in Minneapolis, Swerve was SUPER over, with the crowd chanting for him loudly on his entrance and whenever he had the upper hand. I don’t know WHY he is over so much after the horrible things his character has done, but he got a huge pop.

Since the first match was just a slugfest, this one starts with hold/counterhold between the two. They work a side headlock for almost as long as Rush and Mox fought through the crowd.

Tony said that a lot of people in WCW are saying…   At this point, I don’t pay attention to what people in WCW say.  I mean, I didn’t care about Disco Inferno back when he was on TV, so…

As the match goes on, I really like how they are working together. They are moving from style to style, and Mark is working on Swerve’s injured shoulder, and Swerve is timing his comebacks well.  Swerve takes control through the commercial break, and worked over Mark’s back to ready for the butterfly stomp. Mark fires up and we go into finishing moves. As they each get near falls, the crowd is disappointed no matter who almost gets the pin.

Swerve finally gets the pin after the Swerve Stomp.

Winner and getting three points: Swerve Strickland

Mark has no points and is mathematically eliminated, so now all he can do is play spoiler.

Renee is with Mariah May and May says her meeting with Tony Khan went well, and her debut is planned, and as for who it is against she says it’s none of Renee’s business…

…because tonight is all about Toni Storm.

MJF and Samoa Joe vs Two Of The Devil’s Masked Men

Joe gets to the ring and we see the lights go out and the four masked men around the ring. The lights go out again, and when they come on, the Devil is on the big screen, and it then cuts to MJF laid out in the back. Joe rushes backstage and we go to commercial.

Winner: Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, and Taz, who get camera time because there is no match.

In the back, we get a promo from Mox who says he expects to be undefeated and win the Continental Classic. Swerve, who is also undefeated, says he will do whatever it takes to beat him in Texas.

We then have a pretape with Ben Mankowicz on the Turner Classic Movies set. He introduces Timeless Toni Storm just as seriously as he does any of the movies on TCM. I love it.

Timeless Toni Storm (AEW Women’s Champion) w/Luther vs Skye Blue

Toni no longer has a script for her matches,

As they work, this is the first women’s match in a while where the crowd is really into it, cheering for Toni. Toni has a move where she gets on Luther’s shoulders and they run across the floor with Toni flipping Blue to the floor when they get to the end of the ring apron. Toni stays in character as they work a really solid match.

The whole idea of Toni’s overly dramatic actions with Blue just ignoring it and bringing the fight to her is a great story, and the moves don’t matter as much as how they are done and how they are reacting to them. For a company accused of being spot monkey move focused, this match is all about the CHARACTERS. And it’s got the crowd hooked. Toni wins after a hip attack and reversing Blue’s reversal of the Storm Zero for the pin.

Winner and still AEW Women’s World Champion: Timeless Toni Storm

Riho’s music hits and she runs to the ring. Riho has a whole new look, and she drop kicks Toni. Toni is knocked into Luther’s arms and Riho motions for her to come back to the ring.

We get a video to build up Christian Cage and Adan Copeland’s main event match.

Jay Lethal vs Jay White in a Continental Classic match

They start off with mat based wrestling, and then move to attack and counter attack. Both of these men are so smooth and so good at making things flow from move to move. This match is one where both men get a short time to dominate. When we come back from the commercial break, it has become a spotlight for each man’s big moves and the crowd is chanting “Jay Forever”.

Lethal gets a cover and it takes the ref about three seconds to get into position for the count, and Lethal has words with him, which works for the match. They go back to trading finishers and either near falls or counters to the finisher. In the end, White gets a roll through after Lethal tries a rollup for the pin and the win.

Winner and getting three points: Jay White

Lethal has no points and is mathematically eliminated.

Loved this match. Not a lot of flashy work, just good, solid ringwork where both men showed how good they are.

Christian Cage (TNT Champion) vs Adam Copeland

Copeland goes right for a submission out of the gate and then beats down Cage when Cage gets to the ropes. As Adam beats him down, Cage tries for a low blow in front of  the ref for a DQ and Adam blocks it and keeps up the attack.

These two have worked together for 40 years, so it’s not going to be about if the work is good. It will be, it’s about how they get to the ending and what it is going to be.

Cage is able to turn the tide right before they go to picture in picture by pulling Adam into the ringpost, and then methodically works him over on the small screen. When they return to full screen, Adam is trying to mount a comeback, with Cage cutting him off. After Adam gets a Russian Leg Sweep off the second rope, the match moves to Big Moves and both men having to recover after them.

We get a ref bump and then Cage nails the ref with a low blow from behind. Cage gets his belt and then he and Adam hit simultaneous spears. As they are both down, Nick Wayne's mom comes to the ring, picks up the belt and then nails Adam with it. Cage hits a killswitch on a dazed Adam and then stomps the back of Adam’s neck. The ref revives to count the pin as Cage covers Adam.

Winner and still TNT Champion: Christian Cage
