By Mike Johnson on 2023-10-05 19:46:00

Dick Butkus, one of the most members of the Chicago Bears of all time, who parlayed his legendary NFL success into true celebrity status as an actor and endoser, passed away today at 90 years old.

During the height of his celebrity, Butkus made a celebrity appearance at Wrestlemania 2 at the Chicago portion of the 1986 event, alongside fellow NFL legend Ed "Too Tall" Jones as a guest referee for a battle royal won by Andre the Giant that featured WWF and NFL stars in the same ring.

Butkus also starred in a Chevy commercial alongside then-WWF stars Hillbilly Jim, King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd:

In 2001, Dutkus was named the Head Coach of the Chicago team of Vince McMahon's XFL football league:

The Butkus family said Thursday he died “peacefully in his sleep overnight at home” in Malibu, California, according to The Chicago Times.
