AEW FYTERFEST DYNAMITE BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2023-08-23 20:22:00

It is Wednesday and this week, AEW Dynamite is at the Gas South Arena in Duluth, GA.  The commentary team is Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, and Taz.

It’s the Go Home Show for All In, and it’s branded as Fyter Fest, which they never explain.

The Elite (Matt and Nick Jackson, and Kenny Omega) vs Bullet Club Gold (Colton and Austin Gunn, and Juice Robinson)

It’s a brawl as soon as Bullet Club Gold has their intro and it isn’t long until Juice Robinson takes out the ref with a massive punch. Jay White joins in with Bullet Club Gold and it’s bben thrown out as a no contest.

No Contest

Takeshita joins in the attack and the Elite are being beaten down by Bullet Club Gold. FTR show up and even the odds and everyone brawls to the back as Kenny Omega and Kateshita brawl in the ring, with Kateshita bailing once Kenny starts to get the upper hand.

I guess that’s one way to get the Elite on the show without them giving us the same match as they normally do.

We quickly go to Renee Paquette with MJF, and they are having a sit down interview about the main event at All IN. He cuts a MJF version of a babyface promo and then says that now that he’s a new man, he is under a huge amount of pressure. Hw then puts over people who paved the road for him, and names off a list of legends and says he is standing on the shoulders of giants.

She asks MJF about his friendship with Adam Cole and shows a video of their match and then the times they almost attacked each other after their matches. MJF says that this is all new for him, and he’s never had a real friend before. He says he is being vulnerable for the first time in his life and he asks people to go on the journey with him.

Jon Moxley vs Rey Fenix

This is an odd mix of styles, but that can sometimes make for a food match. They start with brawling but it quickly turns to Rey trying to use high flying spots against Mox, who wants to ground him and goes for Rey’s mask over and over. Rey takes a nasty bump and once it’s clear he is OK, Mox starts beating him around the ring. When they move back in the ring, Rey goes back to high flying attacks and Mox trying to ground him.

After fighting through the ad break, Rey is down and looks almost out. Mox stomps his head in and Rey gets a super kick and both men are down. When they are up, Rey is getting a comeback with a kick and nailing a cutter after escaping a rear naked choke. They fight to another spot where both men are down until an 8 count. They throw hands and Mox wins that exchange, cutting off Rey on the top. Mox is able to lock on the sleeper and puts Rey out for the win.

Winner: Jon Moxley

A good match, probably Mox’s best match in ages and he and Rey had a nice mix of styles, told a solid story, and worked the match instead of relying on blood and shock.  Rey was great as fighting from underneath for the second half of the match.

The BCC start a beat down, and when Kingston and Penta show, Sanatan and Ortiz show up and go after them.  Rey is taken out with a crowbar, which brings out the Best Friends and Orange Cassidy to chase them off.

The doc is out to check on Rey, and it looks like that is how they will write him off All In.

Renee tries to get a word in with Eddie, and he says that her husband did this and he was going to fix it in Wembley.

We get a pre-tape of Renee with Sammy Guevara, and the rest of the Jericho Appreciation Society to confront him. Sammy says Jericho was blinded by friendship, and they say they think he is blinded by his friendship between him and Jericho.

Tony Schiavone is in the ring for one of the worst time honored traditions, the contract signing.  It’s for Will Ospreay and Chris Jericho. Don Callis shows with Ospreay, and when Jericho comes out, he gets a big ovation as he comes out with Sammy Geuvara. Sammy is nwo a hand slapping babyface, so let’s hope it goes better than his last babyface run.

Don Callis grabs a mic and says the only thing better than having Chris Jericho in the Don Callis family, it’s being responsible for the end of Jericho's career. He says he chose money and power over friendship. Ospreay mocks Jericho’s band performing at All In. He says the match will change his life and it will give him enough money to be set for life.

Jericho has a mic and says Ospreay wouldn't have accomplished his Big Things without Jericho. He says Ospreay would have been in a wheelchair by the time he was 35, and he called him and told him how to wrestle the right way. He says he has to be the best he’s ever been to beat him.,. And Ospreay has to be the best he’s ever been to beat Jericho.

This leads to a pull apart as we go to commercial.

We then get Renee sitting down with Adam Cole and shows him the highlights of him and MJF. Cole says that MJF is a great wrestler and how MJF helped him find himself again. She asks him about how Roderick Strong and The Kingdom are questioning him about his friendship with MJF. Cole gets upset and shouts at her about it and says there are no issues with him and MJF.

Darby Allin and Nick Wayne vs Swerve Strickland and AR Fox w/Prince Nana

Prince Nana’s dance on the way to the ring is one of the things that bring me massive joy in wrestling. He is SO great!

And, like every other match tonight, everyone is brawling at the start of the match. Swerve and Fox mock Nicks’ mother at ringside and they then go back to beating down Darby and Nick. Nick and Darby are able to recover and hit coffin drops on Swerve and Fox as we go into the commercial.

When we come back, everyone has been fighting int hr crowd and they return to ringside. When they return to the ring, Nick goes for his version of the Coffin Drop, and Darby and Fox turn it into a neck breaker.  The fight goes back to the floor and it’s just a crazy brawl, which it should be.  Darby and Nick have good reason to get revenge, and Fox and Swerve are the evil bastards who want to put them out.

When they return to the ring, Nick is just being destroyed by Fox and Swerve, but he won’t give up, kicking out at two every time. Nick is able to sneak in and get a bridging rollup as Darby holds Swerve back for the pin and the win.

Winners: Darby Allin and Nick Wayne

A great brawl that built for the match Sunday.  Swerve grabs a mic and says this is disappointing, and he means AR Fox. He says every time Fox gets a chance, he blows it. Swerve says this was a test, and he failed. Prince Nana fires him and Brian Cage beats him down.

IT’S STING with Darby and Nick coming down to make the save. Darby says that no matter what Fox did, he will always credit him for getting him here. He holds out his hand and helps Fox up and says he loves him.  Darby then asks Swerve who he’s got.  Swerve and Nana start laughing, and behind him, Christian Cage and Luchasaurus come out. Cage asks if Darby will introduce him to his little friend.

And Cage goes right for the dead father because that’s what he does.

Sadly, we get no Joker Sting promo.

Renee has a sit down with FTR and the Young Bucks. FTR says it’s because they want to know once and for all what is better. The Bucks say they don’t need to win the match, they are made men. FTR says this is personal for them. FTR says it is about the championship because whoever has the titles is the best team. Dax then says winning cements their legacy. This is when things break down as the Bucks say they built the company for them to perform in.

Ruby Soho vs Skye Blue

Toni Storm goes to the back?  What?  Does Ruby know how to wrestle without people around ringside any more?

And guess what?  THEY BRAWL BEFORE THE BELL!  If it works once, it will work for every single match so that by the end of the show it doesn't matter.

Soho dominates the beginning of the match, showing a lot of arrogance. It goes through a commercial break where Blue gets a flurry of offense. I like Skye Blue a lot, but it sure seems like she’s one of the only three babyfaces in the women’s locker room. Ruby gets the win without cheating by hitting her two finishers.

Winner: Ruby Soho

A decent enough TV match, but the focus on Blue is starting to make the women’s roster feel thin.

Renee is with Roderick Strong and The Kingdom and they say we will find out who the real MJF is and who the real Adam Cole is.

We get a video of the House of Black destroying Billy Gunn’s boots.  The Acclaimed storm to the ring and demand the House of Black show up and fight.

The House of Black obliges them.

And when the House of Black is winning the exchange, we get the Acclaimed music and Billy Gunn shows and comes to the ring.  The House of Black retreat. Gunn tells them to hold on, and since they wanted his attention, they’ve got it.

He talks about all they have done to him and all he has done in the business. He says it’s all or nothing, and one more time, it’s the Acclaimed and Billy Gunn vs the House of Black. Daddy Ass can’t make the trip, but instead we will get the Bad Ass, Billy Gunn.

Great promo from Billy Gunn, and a great setup for the match, which it needs since the Acclaimed have been decimated every other time they have met.

Excalibur then gives a rundown for Rampage and Collision at record speed before running down the card for All In.

Aussie Open (Mark Davis and Kyle Fletcher) Ring of Honor vs Matt and Jeff Hardy

Not much time for this main event.

And, Aussie Open attack before the bell, in accordance with tradition.

The Hardys break out the greatest hits, we go right to picture in picture since there's only 6 minutes left in the show. Aussie Open has Jeff as the babyface in peril through the break and we come back at 2 minutes until the hour and Tony Khan says we will stick with this match until the conclusion. I wonder if AEW is going to start getting the overrun every week like RAW used to to boost the ratings for the next hour.

Matt gets the hot tag and looks good cleaning house. The announcers keep telling us that this match has huge consequences for All In, but it’s super clear that the Hardys can’t win. The match ends with Jeff being. taken out with an assisted cutter.

Winners and still ROH Tag Team Champions: Aussie Open.

Aussie Open grabs a mic after the match and say there will be no double clothesline, no kangaroo kick and they will keep their titles. This brings out MJF and Adam Cole. After they all face off, Aussie Open attack Cole and MJF it's an all out brawl. They tease double clotheslines and kangaroo kicks. Cole almost kicks MJF and they go face to face as well. Each of them tease an attack on the other and we are desperately out of time.
