TOD GORDON BRINGS ECW TO MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE
Extreme Championship Wrestling’s legacy fits comfortably into the “counterculture” and “disreputable” categories as far as the art world is concerned, and Saturday August 26th will see a celebration of that in New York.
ECW founder Tod Gordon and co-author Sean Oliver of Kliq This: The Kevin Nash podcast will be signing copies of their new book TOD IS GOD before a screening of BEYOND THE MAT as part of the Museum of the Moving Image’s “Disreputable Cinema” series. The museum gift shop has added Tod’s memoir to their bookshelf in the “Counterculture TV” section.
Jesse Berberich, the museum's Associate Director of Visitor Experience, sees a symbiosis in ECW and the program's intention.
"MoMI's Disreputable Cinema screening series is all about presenting films that resist the mainstream, and perhaps there's no one who encapsulates that ideal more than Tod Gordon and his ECW," Berberich says. "This event will celebrate Tod's legacy of extreme for what it truly is: art."
Gordon looks forward to the museum's departure from their slate of classic forays into horror and action. "To all my horror movie maniacs, all you mummies and daddies brother, we're bringing the weird and wild to the film museum."
Author Sean Oliver says if nothing else, the appearance is a cultural milestone. “The Museum of the Moving Image has found a way to finally get a wrestling fan into a museum. That has to count.”
Tickets are available at the Museum of the Modern Image website at https://movingimage.us/event/beyond-the-mat/ The museum is located at 36-01 35TH Ave, Queens, NY.
