COMPLETE AEW DYNAMITE BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2023-08-16 20:16:00

It is Wednesday and this week, AEW Dynamite is at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN.  The commentary team is Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, and Taz.

Orange Cassidy (AEW International Champion) vs Wheeler Yuta

AEW is back to starting the show with Cassidy, and the announcers are pushing that Yuta is Casasidy’s former protege. The match starts with more brawling than in their previous match, and they match move for move with chips, forearms, suplexes and the like. They move to brawling on the floor. As this match goes on, you’re getting the serious version of Cassidy to match Yuta’s style.

There are a lot of ads around the set and on the mat for the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” video game because Warner asked them to promote it.  As someone who remembers when the original movie came out and was thought of as a scuzzy movie barely a step above a snuff film, it’s just amazing.

After the commercial break, the match has moved into big moves with a superplex from Yuta onto Casidy from the top and then a diving splash onto Casssidy. Yuta then moves to Blackpool Combat Club moves such as stomping Cassidy’s head in, but Cassidy reverses it.  Cassidy tweaks his leg on a movie and Yuta immediately attacks the leg. Cassidy fires up and gets a few moves, leading to Jon Moxley and Cluadio Castagnoli showing at ringside. Cassiday is abel to get a back drop and grabs the legs, holding on for the pin and the win.

Winner and still AEW International Champion: Orange Cassidy

The BCC attack Cassidy, which brings out the Best Friends. As they brawl, the Lucha Bros make their way to the ring as well. The BCC is finally driven from the ring. They grab steel chairs and surround the ring, and this leads to Eddie Kingston charging the ring and attacking Claudio. The BCC is driven from the ring again.

Eddie grabs a mic and calls for a Stadium Stampede match.

We then get the pre-taped sit down between Jim Ross and Kenny Omega. He talks about how Don Callis was a family friend and guided him to be the best athlete he could be. He says he still thinks of Don as his uncle and he wants to just move on after Dons’ attack. He then talks about knowing Takeshita from his time in Japan. He then says he will take Takeshida down.

Don Callis shows and mocks Omega, leading to an attack by Takeshita, Jay White, and Juice Robinson. We then see a promo from Adam Page, who is outside the hospital. He says he and Kota Ibushi will be by his side as he fights Takeshita, White and Robinson.  A security guard shows and tells Page he can’t have a beer there, so Page downs it.

The “hospital” sure looks like backstage at the arena with an ambulance parked next to the wall.

In the ring, Don Callis is getting booed and introduces Chris Jericho. Jericho comes out during the commercial break, and when we come back, Don and Jericho recap the lead up to this. Jericho says he doesn’t join factions, he creates them. He then says that his answer is Ues, he will join the Don Callis Family and he needs to bet back to hisi roots and recapture the AEW Championship.

Don looks surprised and says Great and says to go to the bar.  There is a painting with a covering over it. Jericho asks to see it and Don tries to distracts him, and when Jericho pulls the cover off, it’s a painting of Don holding Jericho’s decapitated head.

Don tries to weasel out of it and Jericho demands he tell the truth.  Don finally says he didn't think Jericho would say yes because of Jericho's massive ego. Don then runs Jericho down because of his ego. Jericho says three years ago, he was not in wrestling and no one cared. He says Don has messed up every relationship he’s ever had and runs him down again. He slaps Jericho and Jericho attacks him.

Takeshita shows with a chair and Jericho fights him off, but Will Ospreay shows and he takes out Jericho. Jericho has been busted open. Takeshita and Ospreay hold Jericho and Don bashes the painting over his head.  Sammy Guevara rushes to the ring with a baseball bat to run them off.

We then get a taped promo from Jack Perry that he will retire the FTW Championship next week.

Darby Allin and Nick Wayne come out for their match with the Gates of Agony, but are attacked before the match. Swerve Stickland and AR Fox show as well, we go to picture in picture as the beat down continues.

Darby Allin and Nick Wayne vs Gates of Agony (Bishop Kaun and Toa Liona)

Gates have been working over Wayne during the picture in picture. Wayne is able to get the hot tag to Darby, who cleans house. Gates of Agony are a great old school monster heel team, and having Darby and Wayne beat them quickly during Darby’s flurry of offense does them no favors.

Winners: Darby Allin and Nick Wayne

As Fox and Swerve move toward the ring, we get Sting ont he big screen, and he seems to be doing the old TNA “Joker Sting” character. The camera pulls back, and he has Prince Nana with him and scares the crap out of him before going FULL crazy. Just so you know, Joker Sting was one of my favorite things in TNA. Ever.

It’s time for the MJF and Adam Cole show as they prep for their tag team match with Aussie Open at All In. He says is taking them to a place to get inside Aussie Open’s minds.

Outback Steakhouse.

After saying that it was the best meal they have ever had, Cole says he has prep for them as well. Crocodile Dundee One and Two.

MJF says he’s been watching kangaroo fights, so the kangaroo kick will win the match for them. Cole says he has the best idea ever. They have an inflated crocodile on top of a kiddie pool and as a wrestler is checking it out, they double clothesline him! This causes Tony Khan to pull them into his office to yell at them. When they leave, MJF says that is gonna cost Tony in 2024, and Tony opens his office door and says “WHAT DID YOU SAY?”

MJF says he was just talking about how great Tony is.

We then get MJF and Cole driving up in MJF’s car (license plate BTRTHNU). MJF says he has to take a dump, Cole follows. Roderick Strong shows and kicks the tire to MJF’s car, hurting hsi foot and The Kingdom follow him.

MJF and Cole are never allowed to split up.

After a commercial break, MJF and Adam Cole make their way to the ring. MJF does some hoedown dancing before Story Time from Adam Cole. Cole puts them over for the match at Zero Hour and MJF says they will win with a kangaroo kick, which the crowd chants. Cole corrects him and says it will be a double clothesline.

He then talks about their match for the AEW World Championship. Cole talks about how he needs to win the match to cement his legacy in AEW after he was told he may never wrestle again. MJF says that’s a great story, but his is better, and he says it’s time for story time with MJF. MJF says he was told to write down two dream opponents. The first was Cody Rhodes (!!) and the second was Adam Cole.

He then talks about how in 2018, he put 90,000 miles on his truck working shows, and he used that to get to work the first All In. He talks about how that show got him a contract at AEW, and how he climbed up the card and he because the best to have ever done it and the AEW World Champion.

He then says once again, he will be on a show called All In, and he will be in a match with a dream opponent who is his best friend. He says the match doesn’t mean everything to him, and the only thing that means everything to him. That would be the Triple BBB, which is what he calls the World Title. He says that just because they are friends, he won’t lay down for him, and he will win because no one is on the level fo the devil.

Cole says “May the best man win.” and MJF says the best man will win and gives his catch phrase. Cole then does his and they fist bump.

That is a promo for the ages. At the end fo it, I NEED to see this match.

They are then surprise attacked by Aussie Open, but Cole and MJF are able to take control. They call for the double clothesline, and Aussie Open bails.

As MJF taunts Aussie Open, Cole crouches for a super kick, and when MJF turns around, he gets out of the pose and they hug.

In the back, Roderick Strong and The Kingdom are watching on a big screen TV.

In the back, Renee Paquette is with Chris Jericho. Jericho says that Ospreay didn’t need to attack him for a match, since they were going to have one before the pandemic. He then says they will face off at All In.

Jeff Jarrett vs Jeff Hardy in a Texas Chainsaw Massacre Death Match

While Jarrett’s team has been fighting with Hardy’s team, Jeff Hardy was gone for most of it…so maybe it’s a fight to see who gets to be called Jeff in my recaps. Jeff’s face is painted like Leatherface, and while there are tables in the ring, he quickly goes to the hallways of the arena, with red lights scattered about.

It takes next to no time for other people in the two groups to get involved. The brawl goes down a dark corridor of some kind as we go to picture in picture. That’s right, it’s a death match and we’re showing it during ads for medications, Keeler cookies, and tax attorneys. So all fo the damage and pain these guys are putting each other through isn’t in the ring where the crowd can see it, and it’s on a small screen about a fifth the size of my screen as ads are run.

They fight out on the stage and down to the ring. There’s a fog machine under the ring as Hardy and Jerrett makes it inside the ring. The Hardy’s, Brother Zay, and Ethan Page work over Jarrett before Jarrett’s team shows up. Hardy hits a swanton on Jarrett through a table in the ring. We go back to everyone brawling in the ring.

After Jarrett takes a guitar shot from Hardy, a guy in a Leatherface mask with a prop chainsaw shows and chases off Karen Jarrett. I have pretty good sound on my TV, so it’s SUPER CLEAR the chainsaw sound is from the arena speakers.

OK, it wasn’t as bad as Robocop in WCW, but a close second.

Jay Lethal nails Hardy with a hammer, Satnam Singh choke slams Hardy, and Lethal pulls Jarrett on top of Hardy for the win and the win.

Winner: The Discovery Warner Video Games Division

Just as a reminder:

AEW - Piped in chainsaw sounds.

WWF - Put panty hose on terry funk, give him a couple beers, oh and THE CHAINSAW IS GASSED AND READY

Taz has the best comment: Well, that was something.

Britt Baker vs The Bunny to be in the women’s title four way match at All In

Baker comes to the ring in the doctor’s jacket she wore at the first All In.

They shake hands to start and quickly becomes a shoving match. They each go for quick wins with two counts. The crowd is pretty quiet as the match goes on and they go to picture in picture fairly quickly in the match. With the last match’s craziness, it would be hard for anyone to get the crowd excited, but the opening portion is trying to draw them in with a lot of near falls, which seems like a bad idea.

When they come back from picture in picture, Baker just batters Bunny before hitting a sling blade. Baker is working hard in this one and Bunny is doing OK following her lead. Penelope Ford does some distraction on the apron, but Baker gets the spin kick for the pin and the win for a result never in doubt.

Winner and moving on: Britt Baker

The Acclaimed (Max Caster and Anthony Bowens) vs the already in the ring team we are not told about.

The lights go out and when they come up, the House of Black is in the ring. Time for another beat down. I honestly think there have been more beatdowns on this Dynamite than any other wrestling show in history. The House of Black take Billy Gunn’s boots and we go to commercial.

The Gunns (Colton and Austin Gunn) vs The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson)

And the Bucks superkick the Gunns during their entrance. They brawl all the way down to the ring, and Gunns take control as it gets in the ring. Once they are in the ring, the Bucks take over, and this is another match where the outcome is not in doubt in any way. The match only has about 10 minutes, so it’s a spot fest all the way through with a picture in picture break with 7 minutes left in the show.

This episode just has strange pacing all the way through and it makes me wonder if they fell behind and are just rushing to get caught up. They come back from picture in picture with 4 minutes left in the show.  Matt is able to get the hot tag so it’s time for Young Buckery. As I expected, it was a fast paced match with lots of big moves that look awesome. No story to get in the way of the acrobatics. Nick finally gets a surprise roll up with Matt holding onto Nick’s leg for the pin and the win.

Winners: The Young Bucks.

The theme continues as Bullet Club attack after the match and they wrap a chair around Matt Jackson's arm, and Juice goes for the leap onto it, but FTR show up to save the Bucks and we are desperately out of time!
