COMPLETE AEW DYNAMITE BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2023-08-02 20:31:00

It is Wednesday and this week, AEW Dynamite is at the Yuengling Center in Tampa FL. The commentary team is Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, and Taz.

Chris Jericho and Konosuke Takeshita w/Don Callis vs Daniel Garcia and Sammy Guevara

It looks like they have brought back the old set from the early days of Dynamite and everyone gets a few clips on old events on Dynamite as they come to the ring.

And Don Callis still doesn't wear socks with his insanely ugly shoes.

Jericho and Samy start out and he outsmarts Jericho during their battle before tagging in Garcia. It also takes next to no time for Garcia to do his stupid dance, but since he’s facing Jaricho, the crowd loves it. Takeshita tags in and it’s pretty clear that the story is that while Jericho was struggling, Takeshita is able to overpower Garcia easily. Jericho tags in once Garcia has been beaten down and starts working him over. Garcia gets to be in peril through the commercial and Sammy gets to work over Takeshita and Jericho.

We get a few bits like Jericho and Sammy having words when Jericho breaks up a pin, or Sammy trying Jericho with arrogant covers. When Garcia has Takeshita in a sharp shooter, Callis nails him with the bat and Jericho sees it. Jericho still covers him for the pin and the win.

Winners: Chris Jericho and Konosuke Takeshita

It’s time for Tony Khan to tell us “Thanks guys.” He introduces a package of clips from the past and Sammy Guevara being hit by a golf cart will always make me happy. Well done package.

Renee tries to get a word with Jericho and Matt Menard tells him there is a Mandatory Jericho Appreciation Society meeting next week.

In the ring, Tony Schiavone calls out Jack Perry, and not only is he the FTW Champion, but his name on the screen is in orange and black.  Perry pulls the mic from Tony and tells Jerry Lynn to come to the ring and take his ass beating like a man. Jerry comes out with a mic and calls him Jungle. He says he won’t come down to the ring because beating him up would be child abuse. He’s not cleared to be in the ring, but he called a good friend who used to wrestle in ECW.

We then hear Walk by Pantera, legally, and Rob Van Dam is here.

He and Perry go face to face in the ring and Perry rolls out of the ring.

RVD and Jerry Lynn are in the ring and Perry runs back to the ring with a chair. He misses RVD and RVD nearly hits a spinning kick and Perry bails and leaves through the crowd.

We get a promo video for the main event tonight between Hikaru Shida and Toni Storm.

Trent Beretta vs Penta vs Jon Moxley in an anything goes match

Can it be an anniversary show with an excuse for Mox to bleed all over the ring?

It starts with flips and dives, literally, and then right into the ring with trash cans and Mox biting. Mox then brings out a barbed wire wrapped two by four. Penta has one as well and Mox is quickly using it on Trent’s head. Next up is a table by Penta.

There’s no story or through line here, just one implement to the next and when Trent is laid across the table, he’s busted open. Trent is able to get up and attack Penta before suplexing Mox from the turnbuckle to the tables outside the ring. We come back from commercials to tables in the ring. They don't last long as Penta hits a destroyer off the top through a table on Trent, and then Mox driving Penta through a table in the corner.

And then we get thumbtacks.

If these guys had built up a long hate filled feud, I could get it, but this is just a “well, guess we need a weapons battle.” Both Penta and Trent get driven into the tacks, and Trent drives Mox into them.  The fans are chanting fight forever, and I just want it to be over. Finally, Trent steals the win after Mox hits Paradox shift on Penta, but Trent nails Mox with a knee strike to pin Penta for the pin and win.

Winner: Trent Beretta

And Mox didn’t bleed?

Mox slaps a sleeper on Trent, as Claudio and Yuta come through the crowd to the ring, but they are jumped by Cjhuck Taylor and Orange Cassidy. They all fight to ringside. The Best friends fight them off, and Chuck says it didn’t accomplish anything, so they will be fighting in the parking lot at Daly’s Place.

And something was clumsily edited out.

And something was clumsily edited out.

In the back, Renee is with RVD and she asks him what brought him here. He says he heard Jack running his mouth, and next week, he wants the FTW championship.

I guess RVD is the ONLY person who gets to have a backstage interview that isn’t interrupted.

MJF is on his way to the ring. He says wants to have a conversation with us. He says he has attention deficit disorder, and he also has rejection sensitive disorder and it means he can’t deal with rejection.

JOIN THE REST OF US.

He runs down the list of the mean things people have done over the years. He says to protect himself from scumbags, he became one himself, and being a scumbag is easy. He then says he is not scared any more because of The Fans. He says he is still a scumbag, but he’s ready to be The Fans scumbag!

And the crowd chants “He’s our scumbag.”

He then gives credit to his partner and best friend, Adam Cole and calls him out to the ring.

Cole comes down to the ring without music and says that he is proud of Max and he used to be a jerk as well. He then says that not only is he proud of Max, everyone is proud of him.

Max says he is still a scumbag and puts over their shirt. He then says he made Cole a promise that after their match, he’d have a shot at the World Championship. Max says he has been thinking long and hard on it, and Cole does not deserve a match. He then says Cole doesn’t deserve just ANY match, he deserves The Match in the most historic crowd in the history of our sport.

MJF vs Adam Cole at Wembley.

He hands Cole the contract and he signs it. They hug and we have our main event.

In the back, Roderick Strong is having a tantrum, and Matt Taven and Mike Bennett show up and say Cole has forgotten his real friends.

The Elite (Matt and Nick Jackson and Kenny Omega) vs Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal and Stanam Singh

Tony goes into detail about how much he hated Sonjay Dutt as the entrances are happening.

Jarrett and Omega start out the match and it makes me think those two could have a fun match. The Bucks work for a bit with Lethal, but Stanam is in the ring quickly. After Satnam takes everyone out, Jarrett, Lethal and Satnam mock the Elite pose as we go to commercial.

We come back to the Bucks and Omega doing their stuff, with Karen Jarrett interfering. When Sonjay interferes, the Hardy’s come to the ring. We then get Jarrett with the guitar, stopped by Adam Page with a buckshot lariat. Omega gets the one winged angel on Lethal for the pin and the win.

Winners: The Elite

Pure fan service match, and afterwards, they announce that The Elite have re-signed with AEW.

We then get AR Fox explaining that Darby didn’t contact him for five years until they saw each other backstage, and the Mogul Embassy is going to take care of him now. We then get video of Swerve and Fox showing at Nick Wayne’s house to attack him. Swerve knocks Nick out with a picture of his dad.

They then make him call Darby and Fox and Swerve ask Darby why he couldn’t make a call  to AR Fox when he got signed to AEW. They are ghosts of Darby's past and it’s just the beginning.

They leave Nick laying in a puddle of his own blood.

Aussie Open (Mark Davis and Kyle Fletcher) Ring Of Honor Tag Team Champions vs Vikingo and Komander

Imagine how cool this would be if they built this up for a week or two so we thought the title may change.

Vikingo and Fletcher work well together, and as Komader is in the ring, Aussie Open takes over the match. Once Vikingo tags back in, we get a lot of fast paced, high flying stuff.  It lasts until we get to the picture in picture when Aussie Open takes over right before the break.

They are doing a little of the “fast paced wrestlers vs the bigger, stronger team” story, but it is see sawing too fast for that to really take hold. Any time it looks like the match is over, Vikingo and Kamonder hits something astonishing. They also do a bit where they both walk the ropes and leaps onto Aussie Open on the floor. Aussie Open hit Coriolis on Komander for the pin and the win.

Winners and still ROH Tag Team Champions: Aussie Open

It feels like they didn’t have time for the match they wanted to do, since the story kept happening in fits and starts. This was something that should have gotten 20 or so minutes to really tell the high fliers vs the power due story.

Toni Storm (AEW Women’s Champion) vs Hikaru Shida

And once again, the babyface is a moron by coming to the ring alone as Storm comes with Saraya and Ruby Soho.

They start the match by throwing hands and when Storm is losing the battle, she rolls out of the ring to regroup. When Storm gets back in the ring, Shida goes back to beating the tar out of Storm. They do move to fighting on the floor and Storm is able to sweep the leg and take control. They move back to fighting in the ring, and Storm goes to cheating whenever Shida starts a comeback.  We do get a sequence where Shida is tossed to the outside so that Ruby and Saraya can attack when they ref is distracted.

During the picture in picture, I think it’s interesting that women don’t just get the main event, but are having the best WRESTLING match of the night by far.

We come back to full screen for Shida to start her comeback. Shida starts getting near falls, so Ruby is able to sneak in a DDT when the ref isn’t looking. Shida returns to fighting from underneath and we are t6old they will stick with the match until we get a winner. Shida gets a falcon arrow and Saraya shoves the Kendo stick into the ring. Shida grabs the stick and pauses before Shida uses it on Rubyl, who had jumped on the apron.

As the ref gets rid of the stick, Storm nails Shida with the spray paint. Storm hits Storm Zero, but Shida kicks out. Shida is able to reverse a roll up and hold on for the pin and the win.

Winner and NEW AEW Women’s Champion: Hikaru Shida
