7/26 NJPW G1 CLIMAX RESULTS FROM TOKYO, JAPAN

By James Kurokawa on 2023-07-27 08:23:00

7/26/23 Results from New Japan's G1 Climax 33 From Korakuen Tokyo, Japan:

The toll of the tournament is showing as many of the wrestlers are coming to the ring taped up

1 - HENARE vs. EVIL

EVIL comes alone to the ring.    Togo attacks HENARE on his way to the ring.  EVIL attacks and they battle into the upper bleachers of Korakuen Hall.  HENARE looked good, despite a taped shoulder, and was able to hit a lot of offense.  Togo kept consistently interfering.

EVIL hits a low blow on HENARE and follows with Everything is Evil.

2 - Hirooki Goto vs. Alex Coughlin

Goto had taped up ribs and was fighting from behind.   Coughlin looked good with his power offense.

Coughlin pinned Goto after a Jackhammer.

Big singles win for Coughlin, earning his first points in the G1.   More importantly, he pinned the IWGP Tag Team Champion.   This will put War Dogs in line for a Title Match.

3 - Shingo Takagi vs. Mikey Nicholls

Very stiff match.  Nicholls busted himself open again with a headbutt on Takagi.  The finish should have been a Pumping Bomber by Takagi, but both wrestlers came off the ropes and collided in the ring, in an awkward bump.

Takagi falls on Nicholls and gets the pin.

Nicholls immediately was checked on and the camera focused on Takagi winning the match and followed him leaving the ring.  Announcers quickly focused on the next match.

Nicholls seemed dazed and the weird collision was evidence of this.   I hope he does not have a concussion.  But again, these headbutts are crazy and need to stop.

4 - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Toru Yano

Tanahashi complained about Yano's foreign objects and referee pulled out several rolls of tape from Yano's trunks.

Tanahashi pins Yano after a High Fly Flow.

5 - Tomohiro Ishii vs. Eddie Kingston

Fun stiff match.  Both men chopped the hell out of each other.

Ishii hits a brainbuster.   Ishii pins Kingston.

Good match.  Both men were awesome.   Check this match out if you can.

6 - Tetsuya Naito vs. Shane Haste

Good back and forth match.   Naito hits a Destino but Haste kicks out.   Naito goes for another Destino but Haste reverses into Bomb Valley Death.

Haste pins Naito.

Wow!  Big upset and win for Shane Haste.

7 - Tama Tonga vs. David Finlay

Tama attacks Finlay as he comes out.   They brawl into the crowd.  Finlay hurts Tama's knee and works over his leg.

Finlay gets arrogant and tries to powerbomb Tama to go for an injury.  Tama reverses the powerbomb and rolls up Finlay in a cradle pin.

Tama pins Finlay

After the match, Finlay powerbombs Tama and hits him with his shillelagh.

8 - Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Jeff Cobb

They battle past 15 minutes.  ZSJ tries submissions and pinning combinations, but Cobb kicks out.  Cobb hits an F5 and a Tour of the Islands.

Cobb pins ZSJ.

Cobb gets his first win over ZSJ.   Cobb could not beat ZSJ for the IWGP Television Title within the 15 minute time limit.   But now he is line for another title match.
