Former WWE star Dylan "Swoggle" Postl wrote an excellent piece for The Daily Mail in Great Britain, weighing in on the recent controversy over Disney's live-action Snow White remake not using dwarves per the original story, instead, as Postl writes, replacing them with "Normies" aka normal-sized performers.
"Snow White has been a beloved fairytale for hundreds of years. More than that, it is the basis of the entire Disney empire: Walt gambled everything in the 1930s to make the first full-length animated movie and it proved such a success that his studio is now worth billions, " wrote Postl.
"The original film works because all seven dwarfs are individual characters, real human beings. Dopey can't talk but he's affectionate and loyal. And dear old Grumpy isn't really the curmudgeon he pretends to be — he's a romantic at heart. They're all heroes, rescuing the princess from the wicked stepmother who is jealous of her beauty. Far from 'reinforcing stereotypes', this timeless cartoon teaches children that height doesn't matter so much. Everybody is different — that's the message, and the true meaning of diversity. We're all trying to build a more progressive culture. Showing off on his soapbox, [Peter] Dinklage has done damage to that."
In the piece, Postl notes this was Disney's reaction to actor Peter Dinklage criticizing the idea of Disney using little people as Dwarves in 2023, but Dinklage himself first made in-roads as a film actor himself playing a crotchety children's book author in the holiday classic film Elf, a character that wouldn't have worked if they cast a normal-sized person in that role.
While Dinklage found a breakthrough role in Elf, Postl writes, "On a more practical level, he has also done a real disservice to other short actors. He has cost six of us the chance of a supporting role in a megabucks movie. That's the kind of deal that can make a career, and Dinklage knows that" because of his own Elf experience.
It's a well written piece that you can check out at this link.
