COMPLETE AEW DYNAMITE IN EDMONTON BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2023-07-05 20:24:00

It is Wednesday and this week, AEW Dynamite is coming from the Rogers Place in Edmonton, AB Canada. The commentary team is Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, and Taz.

We start with Darby and Keith Lee about their tag team match tonight, and Darby says to take this thing seriously even if he has to team up with Swerve Strickland.  \Lee says Darby is stupid. Ballsy, but stupid.

Orange Cassidy and Darby Allin vs Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee in a Tag Team Eliminator Tournament match.

So this is the tournament where everyone’s partners were chosen by random, and I wish we could have gotten the drawing on TV, rather than just announced via the website. The Random Tag Team thing didn’t quite work with WCW did it, and I’m not convinced thai is much better, although the team of Adam Cole and MJF is better than MJF making Cole run yet another gauntlet.

It is also a bit weird since AEW has a LOT of tag teams and don’t NEED a gimmick like this.

Swerve comes to the ring with the ENTIRE Mogul Embassy.

Lee and Darby start off and Lee just tosses Darby around.

Literally.

Cassidy is tagged in and starts with shenanigans, which is a shame, since he’d moved away from that stuff as he has been defending the International Championship. The crowd is FAR more into this week’s show than they were last week in Hamilton. When Swerve tags in, he starts with the high flying stuff, and Darby also bounces all over the place for him.

When we come back from commercial, Lee is back to performing feats of strength, and Swerve has trapped Darby under the steel steps. Cassidy is able to get a cover after Derby hits Lee with a Code Red, and he dodges when Swerve tries to break it up with a 450 splash, so Swerve nails Lee. Darby is able to get a pin on Swerve for the pin and the win.

Winners and moving on:  Darby Allin and Orange Cassidy

Lee fist bumps Darby and Cassidy.

We then get a video to introduce us to Nick Wayne, the son of Buddy Wayne, and Darby Allin is the one who has brought him into the company. Nick has just turned 18 and now he is able to work for AEW.

Tony Schiavone is in the back to interview Jack Perry as he arrives, and he says he is going to Tony Khan’s office to ask for a FTW title match.  However, Hook shows up and attacks Jack, who is able to get back in the SUV and take off.

We get a video of MJF and Cole at the gym. It’s pretty funny with Cole on his phone while he is supposed to be spotting him on the bench press, Cole out pressing MJF and bonding over their hatred of Tony Schiavone.

The Acclaimed with Billy Gunn vs The Already In the Ring Blade and The Bollywood Boys

Some audio issues with the Acclaimed as they come to the ring.

How Blade has fallen, being teamed up with two guys who aren’t even referred to by their names so that the Acclaimed and Billy Gunn can show off their shenanigans.

Winners: The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn

It feels like they haven't had a feud in months and just come out, do their schtick. I don’t think a feud with QT Marshall and his group is going to give any lift.

Harley Cameron is on the big screen saying she made a video for them next week. After she’s off the screen, Billy Gunn tells her to suck it.

We get a video of Eddie Kingston winning the NJPW NEVER Openweight Championship.  We then get a video from Jon Moxley saying that Eddie needs to let the past go and pick up his phone.

Renee Paquette is with Matt Hardy to see who his tag team partner will be. And it’s Jeff Jarrett.

We then get a video to hype the main event between Kenny Omega and Wheeler Yuta.

Chris Jericho is out for a promo in the ring. The crowd cheers him as a Canadian, but he says this is all bittersweet to him since he’s had a lot of losses lately. He says it’s time to make a few changes. He says this is where he started his career and it’s time for him to become a better Chris Jericho.

Don Callis comes out to ominous music and is met with silence and boos. Don says it was 6 years ago he called Jericho to main event the Tokyo Dome against Kenny Omega. Jericho says that back in 2015, he called Don and got him back into wrestling. Don says that he needs to build a new family, based on Trust, and he wants Jericho to join him.

Jericho says he doesn’t join factions, he creates them. He then says his answer is….Maybe.

Um….well,...OK. A tease for something that this segment did nothing to make me interested in.

We then go to a video to hype Samoa Joe vs CM Punk on Collision on Saturday.

Renee is in the back to get a medical update on Roderick Strong, and he is in a neck brace. Doc Samson says he is making progress but he needs to take time to be 100%. Strong says he’s ready. Adam Cole shows and says he wants Strong to get better.

MJF and Adam Cole vs The Already In The Ring Matt Menard and The Butcher

MJF comes to the ring with Cole, slapping hands and taking part in Cole’s entrance.

MJF is a bit upset that Cole isn’t wearing their new shirt. Butcher and Menard take advantage of that and attack them as the bell rings. Menard gets a little offense before MJF takes over. During an abdominal stretch, Cole stops MJF from using the ropes. Eventually, Cole helps him when the ref isn’t looking. Menard is able to get a hip toss out of it, and he and Butcher work over MJF in their corner.

MJF is great at being in peril, screaming “Help me!’ and almost crying as he is in an abdominal stretch. When he does get the hot tag, Cole cleans house and MJF is laying on the apron. When MJF recovers, he yells for the tag, and Cole ignores him and hits the boom knee for the pin and the win on Menard.

MJF isn’t able to get the double clothesline he wanted with Cole.

Winners: MJF and Adam Cole

MJF grabs a mic and asks if there are Devil Worshippers in the house tonight and the crowd chants for MJF. He then sets up for Adam COle to do his entrance bit. MJF says they would have done better if they had done the double clothesline, and Cole telsl him to back off. MJF says they should have another Bro session, and the crowd agrees.  Cole then agrees. MJF then tells Cole Happy Birthday and MJF has a celebration for Cole’s Birthday with a cake, tiny hats,  and streamers.

Cole looks confused and annoyed, but does blow the noisemaker.

MJF then sings “Happy Birthday” Cole cuts him off and says he’s done more than enough.

MJF says Cole needs to make a wish. MJF tells the camera when Cole is blowing out the candle, he will shove Cole’s face in the cake, but Cole dodges and MJF’s face goes into the cake…and it’s all in good fun. Cole then thanks MJF, but Tony reminds us to never trust MJF.

Renee is with Dr Britt Baker DMD, who reminds us the she is the defending Owen Hart Champion

Renee is with Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara. They're upset over Jericho's "maybe". We are told and Garcia and Guevara have drawn each other as teammates in the blind tournament.

Owen Hart tournament quarter final: Dr Britt Baker DMD vs. Ruby Soho w/ The Outcasts

Takedown for 1 by Baker. Soho with a headlock, another takedown by Soho. Go behind by Soho, Baker maintains a hammerlock. Sling Blade by Baker. DDT by Baker, Soho drags her to the floor. Uranage by Soho as we go to commercial.

Ruby with a back elbow but it's Baker with forearms and a clothesline into a neckbreaker. Another neckbreaker by Baker for 2. Baker takes out the glove. Superkick by Baker, rollup by Soho for 2. Storm trips Baker and Soho nails a Saito suplex for 2. Soho misses a stomp Baker with a rollup into the lockjaw. Saraya distracts the ref as Storm nails baker with the Hart belt. Soho tries to apply the lockjaw but Baker reverses it. Storm and Saraya pull Soho out. Baker stomps Storm. Victory roll by Soho and she scores the pin holding Storm's hand for leverage.

WINNER RUBY SOHO

Skye Blue confronts Soho.

Wheeler Yuta vs Kenny Omega

I LIKE that the BCC and The Elite aren’t at ringside, but we should have gotten an explanation as to why.

Yuta attacks before the bell, and they are working this match as if it is more of a fight than a wrestling match. Kenny goes for the “You cannot escape” and is unable to leap to the turnbuckle as a result of the Tiger Driver he got at Forbidden Door. Yuta takes over on the outside after this sequence.

Yuta takes over and Kenny is fighting from underneath into the picture in picture and as they come out of it. Kenny gets a big flurry of offense until both men are down and struggling to recover. As the match goes on, Yuta keeps using moves to attack the back of Kenny’s head  and neck area.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Kenny battle from beneath, and he doesn’t get as much of his offense as he normally does. When Kenny is starting to take control, Don Callis tries to come to the ring, and is stopped by Security. This allows Takeshita to attack Kenny with his spinning power bomb.  However, this doesn’t stop Kenny from getting a One Winged Angel for the pin and the win.

Winner: Kenny Omega

After the match Takeshita and Claudio Castagnoli attack Kenny, but the Bucks and Adam Page run to the ring with chairs for the save and we are desperately out of time!.
