FANTASTIC EIGHT MAN TAG & MORE: AEW COLLISION REPORT

By Cory Strode on 2023-06-24 20:40:00

It is Saturday and time for AEW Collision, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Scotiabank Arena. Our announce team is Nigel McGuinness and Kevin Kelly.

Punk, FTR and Ricky Starks as well as Bullet Club Gold and the Gunns have pre taped promos about their main event match on the show before we go to the opening theme.

Tony Schiavone is in the middle of the ring to speak to Darby Allin and the man called Sting, but.instead we get Chris Jericho and Minoru Suzuki on their way to the ring. Jericho reminds the crowd he’s not from Toronto, he’s from Winnipeg. He’s mad at Sting for keeping their partner a secret and they can’t be tougher than Suzuki. He then says Sammy Geuvara is a little upset at how close he and Suzuki are. He also says he knows Tony knows who the partner is.

Jericho threatens Tony until Sting’s music hits. Sting and Darby saunter to the ring. Darby says he will kick Sammy’s ass just like their partner kicks Jericho’s ass at the Tokyo Dome.  The crowd chants for Tetsuya Naito who comes to the ring.

Jericho and Suzuki leave the ring and Naito holds the ropes open of Jericho to come back in and get some.

We get a promo from Miro who said that he was told he would be a champion once again as long as he would praise him. He says the fool was wrong, and he kneels to no one and he now walks alone.

Swerve Strickland w/Prince Nana vs Hiroshi Tanahashi

HUGE chants for Tana.

When they break, Tana gets a flying cross body. Tana then tosses Swerve and air guitar, which he himself plays. Swerve plays it as well and Tana hits him with a low drop kick.

Tana tosses the air guitar and goes to the corner, but Swerve dodges for a roll up and Tana rolls out of the ring as Swerve mocks Tana. Tana hits a forearm on the apron. Swerve kicks the rope as Tana comes in the ring, and after a kick, Swerve mounts for a ground and pound. Swerve slams Tana into the top turnbuckle and then tries to toss him over the top, but Tana skins the can and pulls Swerve to the outside with a leg scissors. Swerve traps Tana in the apron and goes after Tana as we go picture in picture.

When they return to full screen, they are throwing forearms in the middle of the ring. They then pull each other’s hair and go to the ropes. Tana gets a flying forearm, and then a series of strikes. Tana hits a scoop slam and goes to the second rope for a somersault senton for two. Swerve gets a rolling DDT for two.

Swerve gets a rear grip for a suplex, but Tana turns it into a pair of roll ups for two. Tana gets a dragon screw leg whip, followed by a sling blade for two. Tana goes to the top for the High Fly Flow, but Swerve gets his knees up and covers for two. Swerve waits for Tana to get up and hits a pair of kicks to Tana’s knee. Swerve goes to the top and misses the double stomp. Tana gets another sling blade and goes to the top again. He almost falls due to the knee work Swerve did and Swerve goes to the top. Tana knocks him off, hits the High Fly Flow for the pin and the win.

Winner:  Hiroshi Tanahashi

And MJF’s music hits. Tana waits, but no MJF on the stage. Instead, he’s on the screen. He says he will embarrass Tana and said he will only show if they are match one. He then says he will take Tana’s air guitar, put it between Tana’s knees and shove up his ass.

Brody King vs. Andrade el Idolo

Andrade hits a back elbow and locks on the figure four. Andrade bridges up for the figure eight, but Buddy Matthews charges the ring and goes after Andrade.

Winner via DQ: Andrade El Idolo

Buddy takes out the ref and holds Andrade for the discus punch from Brody. They then hit the Gonzo bomb and leave Andrade laying.

A good “meat and potatoes” match with simple, clear feud building.  The show is paced slower than Dynamite was, allowing the simple stuff to matter more. When you let the simple stuff settle, it resonates and means more than fast cuts and crazy pace.

Tony Schiavone is in the ring and calls for Christian Cage and Luchasaurus to come to the ring. Luchasaurus won the TNT titl;e last week, but Cage is carrying it as if he is the champion. Tony asks cage how he feels being back home and Cage gets cheered by the crowd.

Cage says he was in a bad mood last week, but he knew he’d be home with Toronto with the TNT title, but now he’s in a worse mood. He says the city breeds losers. He bashes the Maple Leafs finally winning a playoff match, but choking in the second round. He goes on about sports in Toronto, and I have to say I have no clue who he is referring to. But it worked since the crowd hates him.

Cage says the open challenges for the TNT title are done. He says he will raise the title to new heights and he…they will remain the face of TNT now and forever.

We then get a promo video from everyone in the Owen Hart tournament.

Willow Nightingale vs Nyla Rose - Owen Hart Tournament

The Outcasts surround the ring, but Skye Blue charges the reign with a steel chair to drive them off.

In the back, Lexi is with Scorpio Sky. He says he couldn't handle his big break of coming to AEW until now. He puts over his accomplishments while being a shadow of his true self and now we will see who he really is.

Punk is worked over in the corner.

Jay is tagged in and works over Punk in his team's corner. Punk tries to fight his way out, but Jay hits a dragon screw leg whip. Juice is tagged in and keeps working on the leg. Austin tags in and Punk lays in chops to get to his corner, but Austin stops in and tags in Jay. The keep Punk in their corner with quick tags as we go picture in picture.

When we return to full screen, Jay has Punk on top in a neutral corner. As Jay is on top yelling at Punk, Punk goes for his eyes and knocks him to the mat. Punk hits a flying cross body but his ribs are hurt too much to hold a pin. Jay stops Punk from getting to the corner and they trade chops. Punk is able to whip Jay into the corner and gets the rising knee. Punk gets the looping neck breaker and as Punk gets to the corner, the Gunns and Juice know FTR and Starks off the apron.

Juice then calls for the GTS. Punk grabs his leg and gets a kick. Juice tags in Austin, but Punk kicks them off and tags in Starks, who cleans house on the Gunns. Juice and Jay try to attack, but Starks fights them off, and then FTR comes in and takes them out of the ring. Jay tags in and Starks hits a blue thunder bomb on Jay.
