I saw the new Cyndi Lauper documentary Let the Canary Sing at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC this past Friday. The film, which is excellent, traces the life and career of the incredibly talented singer, who was a major part of the Rock N' Wrestling Connection in the 1980s WWF before going on to become a massive musical icon.
In the film, they do touch on the WWF connection a bit, starting with Lou Albano being brought in to play Lauper's father in the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun music video.
Lauper's former manager and boyfriend Dave Wolff, who is interviewed extensively in the film, notes that the record company was looking to move on from Girls as a single because it wasn't charting high enough. They gave Wolff one last chance to push it, and he came up with the idea of Lauper appearing on WWF programming and going back and forth with Albano on Piper's Pit. Two weeks later, the song topped the charts.
The film shows footage of Hulk Hogan in a sleeveless tuxedo with Lauper as she accepts a Grammy that year, which got a lot of laughter from the diehard cinephile audience in attendance.
Canary shows lots of footage of Lauper managing Wendi Richter, who is also interviewed for the film. The film doesn't go into why the WWF relationship ended. Richter later shows up in the film admitting she had no idea the song "She Bop" was about masturbation, noting that the way she was raised, that wasn't a topic that was discussed. That got a big laugh out of the audience as well.
No other pro wrestling personalities are interviewed.
There is no word yet on the film being acquired for distribution yet, but if you are even a passing fan of Lauper's, you'll probably really love the film.
Lauper's sister Ellen, Broadway star Billy Porter and singers Anita Baker and Boy George are asolutely great interview subjects in the film and Lauper herself comes off excellent.
