AEW CHAMPIONSHIP RAMPAGE REPORT

By Cory Strode on 2023-06-02 23:01:00

It is Friday and AEW Rampage was recorded after AEW Dynamite at the Viejas Arena in San Diego, CA. Our commentary team is Excalbur, Jim Ross, and Tony Schiavone. They are hyping this as Championship Friday, and every match is for a title.

Vikingo (AAA Mega Champion) vs Dralistico vs Komander

Lots of flips and dives in the middle of the ring to start with. They move to the floor where Dralistico is able to send Vikingo into the barricade. Dralistico and Komander go into the ring where Dralistico dominates Komander, complaining to the ref about a slow count. He then charges up the ramp out of frustration before Jose the assistant talks him into going back to the ring where he works over Komander.

When Vikingo gets back into the natch, he leaps off the top rope into Dralistico on the floor. He rolls both of his opponents into the ring and hits a launching hurricanrana and then a phoenix splash onto Dralistico. Komander is dropped to the floor so that Vikingo and Dralistico fight each other, first with chops, then with knee strikes and kicks. They go to picture in picture as Vikingo gets a two count.

In the crowd, we get the Lucha Libra horn blowing, and they are cheering for every big move.

When we return to full screen, a table has been set up at ringside and Kommander is back in the match. Komander and Dralistico have been put on the table and Vikingo hits a 630 senton from the middle rope from the inside, but Dralistico rolls off the table in time. Dralistico rolls Vikingo into the ring and goes for a power bomb, but Vikingo reverses it and holds  onto the leg for the pin and the win.

Winner and still AAA Mega Champion: Vikingo

Willow Nightingale (NJPW Strong Women's Champion) vs Emi Sakura

Emi tries a few charges and Willow stands strong. Willow then tries and Emi starts strong. Willow finally is able to get a shoulder tackle and take Emi corner to corner with chops and then hits the machine gun chops on Emi. They then fight on the apron, which I hear is the hardest part of the ring, and Emi rakes Willow’s eyes and then hits a cross body, driving Willow to the floor. Emi hits a cross body into Willow in the barricade as we go picture in picture.

When they return to full screen, Willow charges into Emi in the corner and then hits a shotgun drop kick for two, and Emi rakes the eyes. Emi is able to get a rear headlock slam. Emi charges and hits a cross body in the corner followed by a twisting Vader bomb for two. Emi tries to butterfly the legs and Willow powers out, Emi turns it into a sunset flip for two. Willow hits a low cross body for two. Emi gets a rollup for two and goes for an arm bar, but Willow blocks it. They hit each other with simultaneous clotheslines.  Emi hits a final clothesline on Willow and they both drop.

Emi again tries to butterfly the arms and tries for a slam, but can’t quite get her up. She holds on and the second time is able to get the slam. Emi gets in a series of chops and Willow is whipped to the corner. Willow comes out with a pounce, then a cannonball in the corner for two.  Willow tries for a gut wrench, but Emi kicks out and lays in chops.

Emi follows with slaps and Willow hits a clothesline and a Doctor Bomb for the p[in and the win.

Winner and still NJPW Strong Women’s Champion: Willow Nightingale

Zack Sabre Jr (NJPW TV Champion) vs Action Andretti

Zach works a cravat and then a wrist lock on Andretti. Zach keeps the wrist lock on even when Andretti hits him with a monkey flip. Andretti is able to break with an arm drag and he grabs a quick two count on Zack. They fight in the ropes and Zach gets a body scissors and then wraps up the shoulder until the ref makes them break.

Zack starts working over Andretti’s shoulder. Zack works a wrist lock into an arm bar, changing things up so that this one hold is taken through different variations. Andretti gets a rope break and Zack gets another arm bar, making Andretti carry him as he holds it. Andretti is able to lift Zack up and slam him down to escape the hold.

Andretti finally gets a springboard back elbow and goes to the top. Zack rolls out of the ring, and Andretti leaps to the ropes for a top rope split legged moonsault onto Zack. Zack is rolled back in the  ring and Andretti gets a leaping insigiri off the middle rope for two. Zack escapes a fireman’s carry and goes back to working on Andretti’s shoulder.

Andretti gets a standing insigiri and as Zack goes to the top, Andretti gets a strike and joins him. They fight on the top and Andretti is knocked to the mat, but kips up, goes to the far side, runs to leap up and hits a top rope hurricanrana for two. Andretti picks up Zack in a fireman’s carry and Zack grabs a headlock while in the hold. Andretti drops and rolls up Zack for a two count.

Andretti gets a poisonrana and a drop kick. Andretti gets a split legged moonsault for two. Andretti tries for a leaping cross body. And Zack is able to grab an arm bar and takes Andretti down. Zack then grabs the second arm and locks them in his legs and Andretti has to submit.

Winner and still NJPW TV Champion: Zach Sabre Jr.

Katsuyori Shibata (Ring Of Honor Pure Champion) vs Lee Moriarty

They start with mat based grappling and neither gets an upper hand until Shibata is able to get a Juji Gatame into a triangle to force Lee to use his first rope break.

Shibata forces Lee back down and when they return to their feet, Lee is able to put Shibata in the corner and stomp him down. They move into the middle of the ring when Lee gets a drop kick to Shibata’s knee as we go picture in picture.

When we return to full screen, Shibata has a figure four on Lee and Lee keeps trying to force Shibata’s leg off. Lee goes to the ropes for his second rope break.

Shibata works over Lee in the corner with elbows, but Lee is able to reverse it and hits a leaping knee strike. Lee gets a two count with a suplex into a bridge. After more strikes from Lee, Shibata and Lee struggle to suplex the other, and no one wins. They break and Shibata comes off the ropes with a knee, and follows up with a running foot in the corner. Shibata follows with elbow strikes and then a leaping drop kick into Lee’s face in the corner. Shibata gets a suplex into a two count. Shibata gets a rear headlock and Lee goes to the ropes for his final rope break.

Lee gets a quick roll up for two and follows with the border city stretch, but can’t quite lock it on. Shibata is able to roll under and get a two count. Shibata locks on a sleeper hold, and follows with a kick after coming off the ropes for the pin and the win.

Winner and still ROH Pure Rules Champion: Katsuyori Shibata

Daniel Garcia, a former Pure Champion goes to the ring and goes face to face with Shibata as we are desperately out of time.
