It is Wednesday and AEW Dynamite is at the Viejas Arena in San Diego, CA. Our commentary team is Excalbur, Taz, Tony Schiavone, and Bryan Danielson,
Blackpool Combat Club (Jon Moxley, Wheeler Yuta, and Claudio Castagnoli) vs The Lucha Brothers (Penta and Rey Fenix) and Bandido
All six men face off before the bell and the BCC attacks first and it quickly turns into a brawl all around the ring. Bryan on commentary starts talking about how the BCC;’s style is “Death Jitsu” complete with new shirts. In the ring, we get Yuta and Bandido but the brawling at ringside does not stop. We don't get to see much of it on TV, which means it is mostly for the live crowd, which is MUCH more lively than Vegas was last week.
Bandido holds Yuta in a stalled vertical suplex for a count of 60, but it only leads to a two count, which means that even though it looked impressive, it didn’t do much more than a normal suplex. This is a move that should be saved as a finishing move.
As we come back from picture in picture, Bandido is still in the ring and has been the babyface in peril all through the break. He played that role for the Best Friends last week, so with him bouncing from team to team, he gets a good spotlight for how good he is, but it doesn’t seem to be leading to any momentum.
As the match goes on, Bryan does a fantastic job of putting over the training they have put Yuta through, making him seem more important, not by bragging like a heel, but putting over style and technique. In the end, Yutas grabs the win with the seat belt in a match that carried on from the push he got at the PPV.
Winners: Blackpool Combat Club
In the back, Alex Marvez is with the Elite to ask how they are doing after the anarchy in the arena match. They say that the BCC brings out the worst in them, they are still standing. The Dark Order shows up and says they will leave Adam Page with his new friends. Alex asks about Kenny and asks if he went back to Canada. Page says Kenny is not in Canada as he follows after the Dark Order.
Tony Schiavone in the ring to talk to Jay White and Juice Robinson. He asks them about their attack on Ricky Starks. Jay White says that while Ricky eliminated them, he isn’t the International champion. Juice asks why FTR came to the rescue for Ricky, because Ricky has no friends. Jay White then says that FTR look and sound dumb, and that brings out FTR.,
Jay says FTR came out to join Bullet Club Gold. He says that if they wanted to join, they just needed to ask. Politely. He goes to hand the mic to FTR, but drop it and the fight is on. Bullet Club lays out FTR, and Ricky Starks runs out for the save. He challenges them to a fight next week.
It’s Announcement Time! In fact, why don't we just have a major announcement on Every Episode of Collusion! ALL ANNOUNCEMENT WRESTLING! He announces that the first episode will feature CM Punk, and there is a mixed reaction to this one.
Trent Beretta vs Big Bill vs Swerve Strickland
Swerve boils immediately and Trent and Bill face off until Trent dives out of the ring and tosses Swerve back in the ring. Bill then dominates both of them until we go to picture in picture. As Excalibur hypes the Fight Forever video game, he asks Taz if he plays games and Taz says “No, I don’t play video games, I’m an adult.”
There’s Taz, endearing himself to the AEW core audience.
When we come back from the picture in picture, Trent and Swerve are working together on Bill. The story so that Trent and Swerve work together because Bill is a monster, but Swerve is ready to turn on Trent at a moment’s notice for a pin. Swerve ends the match with a stomp on Bill and rolling up Trent for the pin and win.
Winner: Swerve Strickland
An OK match that tried to make Bill look like a monster and did a good job of that, but other than that, nother to push any story forward.
We get a video showing that Kris Stalander is back and won the TBS title.
Renee is on the stage and calls out The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn. Billy says that anyone can get beat at any time, but he feels bad he let The Acclaimed down. Max Caster says they are the people’s choice and their goal hasn’t changed. Anthony says they were screwed out of gold a few weeks back, and that Billy Gunn deserves to hold gold one more time.
A pretty blah promo from guys who are usually gold on the mic.
Back to Tony Schiavone in the ring as he interviews Don Callis and Takeshit . Don is getting booed so loudly, it’s hard to hear him, and he says that all of Kenny Omega’s successes are because of him. He says he lost a nephew, but he gained a son, and Takashita is the best athlete he has ever seen.
Takeshita takes the mic and speaks Japanese to a crowd that is still booing him.
Don says that Omega destroyed his family, and his new family will cut the elite out of All Elite Wrestling. The turn was handled poorly, but Callis has nuclear heat with this crowd.
We get a recap of Wardlow beating Christian Cage to retain the TNT title.
Gates of Agony (Bishop Kaun and Toa Liona) vs Orange Cassidy and Darby Allin
Another odd match that doesn’t seem connected to anything. Darby and Cassidy are markedly smaller than both members of the Gates, and Gates dominates the start of the match. Prince Nana and Brian Cage come to the stage to watch the match with Swerve Strickland behind them. As the match goes on, it looks more like a squash match rather than a man who just went for the AEW world title and the International Champion in a match.
When they come back from a picture in picture break, Darby is being tossed around like he weighs nothing. When Cassidy is tagged in, he goes for speed to avoid the Gates and it doesn’t last long. Darby then tags in and hurls himself into the Gates and Darby wins with a coffin drop.
Winners: Orange Cassidy and Darby Allin.
This is the definition of a match that didn’t need to be done. Gates of Agony had to lose because of becoming stumblebums in the last three minutes of the match.
As the Embassy comes to the ring, it’s time for the Man Called Sting to chase them off.
We get a video from MJF where he explains he has no competition, and they are running out of people who can challenge him.
Tony Schiavone is back down in the ring, and it’s been a weird show, so, send for Hook and his unfortunate hair.
Tony asks what is next for Hook, and before he can say anything, Preston Vance and Dralistico come out with Jose who bad mouths Hook all the way to the ring. Jose tells Vance and Dralistico to attack, but they are stopped by Jungle Boy running to the ring with a chair.
In the back, Renee is with The Outcasts to ask Toni Storm how it feels to be champion. Storm says she’s doing great and it’s not luck but talent that got her here. She says there is no one who can touch her.
Kris Statlander (TBS Champion) vs Nyla Rose
Nyla is a good challenger to start off with, and I just wish AEW would use her sense of humor with her character. Her trash talk in the ring normally isn’t picked up by the microphones, but when I get to hear it, it really adds to the match AND makes me laugh.
Statlander is now billed as being from her home town instead of outer space, which is a good change.
The match is a meat and potatoes match with both working well together, and Statlander showing she is a powerhouse against Rose. She also looks as if she can go toe to toe with Rose, and you forget just how tall Statlander is. Statlander wins with a 450 splash and Taya Valkyrie is fuming in the back as she watches it all.
Winner and still TBS Champion: Kris Statlander
We get a video recap of the Jericho Appreciation Society vs Adam Cole and Roderick Strong match at Double or Nothing.
Chris Jericho and Saraya vs Adam Cole and Britt Baker
Jericho and Cole start by just trying to beat the crap out of each other, as they should. Jericho is abel to take over after a poke to the eye. When Saraya tags in, Baker is out for revenge, but Saraya distracts the ref so that Jericho can trip her. Since Cole sees it, he charges at Jericho as we go to picture in picture.
When we come back, Baker is tossed to the outside where she takes the most ineffectual kicks and strikes from Toni Storm and Ruby Soho. Shida runs to ringside and runs them off with a Kendo stick.
Any time Cole is in the ring, he looks like a man out for revenge, and Jericho does a solid job of looking like he’s on the defensive. When Cole goes for Panama sunrise, Jericho sweeps the legs and turns it into the Lion Tamer.
Since Cole can’t get to the ropes, Baker comes into the ring and puts on the Lock Jaw as the referee does nothing. Saraya breaks it up so that the ref doesn’t have to disqualify, or count or anything.
As Saraya gets a near fall on Baker, Jericho grabs his bat and charges into superkicks from Cole and Baker. Cole then gets the Boom knee for the pin and the win.
Winners: Adam Cole and Britt Baker
Just a sloppy match, and now that Jericho has been beaten twice, it’s time for both fo them to move onto something else.
