REMEMBERING THE LEGEND DUSTY RHODES

By Kendall Jenkins on 2023-05-29 06:52:00

WWE fans of a certain age may feel a touch nostalgic when they hear the name Cody Rhodes. And the reason for that is because the Rhodes family name is synonymous with wrestling history.

The Rhodes wrestling dynasty

Cody Rhodes first rose to fame as a member of the WWE from 2006 to 2016. He then left the franchise and branched out onto the independent circuit, also making appearances for the TNA (now Impact Wrestling) brand.

But he’s now back in the WWE, and boy has he made an impact. On his return to the WWE roster in 2022, Rhodes was the surprise opponent of Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 38. The two wrestlers developed a feud that has since continued. And this battle shows no sign of letting up, with the two set to cross swords again in the 2024 Royal Rumble. Early betting online odds have Rollins as the 3/1 favourite, with Rhodes at 6/1. The use of an odds converter tool will help if you need to convert those odds to the American format.

One of the reasons Cody Rhodes gave for returning to the WWE was to win the coveted WWE Championship belt, a belt never held by his father. And in case you're not aware, Cody’s father was the late wrestling legend, Dusty Rhodes.

Dusty Rhodes; A huge name in the world of wrestling

Dusty Rhodes was part of the WWE when it was previously known as the WWF, first wrestling for the franchise from 1989 to 1991. That was in the days when the sport was dominated by the likes of Hulk Hogan and Randy Macho Man Savage.

Showing just what a superstar of the sport Rhodes had become, he featured in a wrestling ‘feud’ with the Macho Man, who became known as the Macho King for his part in the role. Such feuds only took place between big-name stars, showing how highly regarded Rhodes was within the sport back in the day.

Rhodes went on to become embroiled in more feuds with big names of the WWF such as the Million Dollar Man, and also wrestled against the now wrestling legend, the Undertaker. It was at this time, at the height of his fame, that Dusty Rhodes received an offer to return to the WCW, which he accepted, and from then on, his career inside the ring wound down.

But before he turned his hand to work outside the ring, one of Dusty Rhodes's last appearances in the WWF was alongside another of his sons, Cody’s half-brother, Dustin Rhodes.

Cody's famous brother

Yes, also part of the Rhodes wrestling dynasty is former WWF and WCW star, Dustin Rhodes. When the father and son combination performed together early in Dustin’s career, it was a fitting way for his father to bow out of the WWF.

Dustin hasn’t quite hit the heights within the wrestling world that his father did, but he has had one hell of a career. He has left and returned to the WWF/WWE no fewer than five times, and on his return for the fifth (and to date, final) time, he even wrestled alongside his half-brother Cody, in a tag-team format.

Cody may well be the big-name Rhodes family member in the wrestling ring at the moment. But it’s fair to say his family predecessors have more than left their mark on the sport. They truly are a wrestling family dynasty.
