COMPLETE AEW DYNAMITE BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2023-05-24 20:26:00

It is Wednesday and AEW Dynamite is at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Our commentary team is Excalbur, Taz, and Tony Schiavone.

Orange Cassidy (AEW International Champion) vs Kyle Fletcher

Cassidy’s back is even more taped than last week. Fletcher charges into Cassidy at the bell and covers for two. The story they have been telling is that Cassidy is running himself ragged with an injured back, a bad hand, and opponents keep going after his knees. Fletcher goes after Cassidy with the Strong Style quick and snug moves.

I had thought that Fletcher was going to be in the Blackjack Battle Royal at Double or Nothing, but they have been having Cassidy in the kick off match more often than not. It also means that with his “injuries”, Cassidy is always fighting from underneath as he moves further away from the silliness he got attention for. Fletcher holds Cassidy in a Stalling vertical suplex for an extra long time before the picture in picture commercial.

We come back to Cassidy getting a flurry of offense after Fletcher controlled things before the commercial. It quickly turns to a 50/50 match showing the difference in style. As the move into the finishing sequences, both men work together so well that once again, you have a feeling either one can win. In the end, Cassidy is able to reverse a pile driver into a surprise roll up for the pin and the win.

Winner: Orange Cassidy.

A solid match to start the show, both men made it look good.

We then get Ricky Starks in the back to talk to Renee Paquette about how he was in full control last week. He says if no one will stop the after match attacks, he will take matters into his own hands. Juice Robinson attacks him, and Jay White joins in and they toss Starks into an equipment crate.

Jay White holds Ricky down and says they are having too much fun making his life a living hell.

Jungle Boy talks about driving to the show tonight, and how he used to drive through Vegas for his indy dates. He says last year was the worst drive of his life. He then talks about how the wrestling ring has given him purpose and Monday when he drives him, he will do it as the AEW World Champion. If you were looking for a promo to pump you up, keep on looking as if seemed a bit devoid of emotional heft.

FTR come to the ring to talk about their match at Double or Nothing. Cash says that Lethal and Jarrett have outsmarted them every step of the way, and they have been lucky, and at Double or Nothing, their luck runs out. Dax then has enough emotional heft in how he talks about how he will make sure Jarrett loses and how Jarrett may have to call Dixie Carter for a job.

Mark Briscoe comes to the ring. Dax says he knows they made a mistake, and not to let Jarrett and Lethal make him look stupid. Mark says they were brothers for life, and asks about the piledriver last week and asks him to shake his hand, and Mark slaps him twice. They argue and Mark leaves the ring.  Maerk sees Jarrett’s team and smacks Jarrett, Sonjay Dutt and Karen Jarrett aside.  He then tells Jay that jay is his boy, but he’s done with the BS.

Nice segment that makes it so Mark doesn’t look like a moron leading into the match on Sunday.

In the back, Sammy Guevara is with Renee, and she says MJF’s offer still stands for him to lay down and take that check. Sammy says he won’t lay down for him, and MJF can’t buy everything. He says he did make it as a pro wrestler and he’s the man who will take the title from MJF. An OK promo from Sammy, but didn’t feel like a world title promo.

House of Black (Malakai Black, Brody King, and Buddy Murphy) (AEW Trios Champions)  vs Metalik, Blake Christiansen, and AR Fox, and it’s a House Rules match.

This should just be a spotlight for House of Black. Buddy starts with Blake and each member of the Metalik team is taken out quickly.

They change up the presentation for House of Black with the house lights down, a light effect on the crowd instead, and the big screen shows a constant video that makes it look as if metal is falling on the stage. It gives everything a creepy feel that sets their time in the ring apart.

Fox and Metalik get to show up some of their aerial movesand Fox looks like he’s big enough to hang with House of Black.  The House of Black eventually locks everyone in a submission move, and since there are no rope breaks, they all submit.

Winners and still World Terios Champions: House fo Black

They don’t have a match at the Pay Per View?

We then get a video about the match between The Elite and The Blackpool Combat Club.

Bryan Danielson then explains the BCC’s objectives. Winning the Ring of Honor tag team titles tonight and destroying The Elite on Sunday. Jon Moxely then puts his team over as the best team in the world.

Still no breakdown of why Don Callis turned on Kenny Omega.

MJF now gets his time in the ring with a Mic.  He drinks some of Tony Schaivone’s coffee and tosses the rest on him. He mocks the crowd before going into how he feels about the odds stacked against him. Nice slam at Jungle Boy’s promo as he runs down the other pillars. Oddly, he says that he and the others aren’t just a part of AEW, they are AEW without the luxury of having been on TV before AEW started.

He then says he is sick of AEW fans and the lack of competition. He then brings up his contract is up soon and that Tony Khan is doing thai to take the title off him before he leaves.

As he finishes his promo, Darby comes from the back with a mic. He explains where he comes from and he wants to be the face of AEW and he needs to become world champion. And he might do it with a headlock takeover.  MJF gets in a low blow and as he gets ready to go after him, Sammy Guevara runs to the ring and MJF heads up the ramp as Jungle Boy comes from the back and clotheslines MJF down. He holds the belt as we go to a video about the TNT title ladder match.

Taya Valkyrie vs Lady Frost

We get a quick intro video that Lady Frost has been on Ring of Honor.  And that she’s not Ice Cold from WOW.

Frost and Taya have a physical match with a lot of strikes and kicks with Jade Cargill and Keira Hogan coming onto the stage to watch as they go picture in picture. It’s odd how the crowd is getting progressively quieter as the show goes on. I don't see a problem with the show unless the crowd was there for a pre-show taping, they might be getting burned out.

When Taya is in the middle of the ring with Frost, she looks HUGE in a good way. My only problem is that Taya should be getting in a lot more offense so that she feels more like a threat to Cargill. Taya gets the Road to Valhalla for the pin and the win.

Winner: Taya Valkyrie

Mark Sterling keeps Jade from attacking as we go to Tony Khan’s Announcement about Collision, which will kick off at the United Center in Chicago Il.

Page is with Alex in the back and he asks him about his friendship with the Bucks and Kenny Omega. Page says he doesn’t know if he and Kenny were ever friends, but they were family.

Um…wut?

He then goes over that the price the BCC have run up is too high and they will pay this weekend.,

And now the Contract signing between Chris Jericho and Adam Cole with Tony Schiavone. Jericho comes with the entire Jericho Appreciation Society. Cole just has Roderick Strong. Tony reminds us that Sunday is an unsanctioned match and AEW takes no responsibility for what happens between them. Cole runs down Jericho and says Jericho isn’t as invincible as he thinks he is. He then goes through a laundry list of things he’s going to do to Jericho.

Jericho then runs the clip of Britt Baker being attacks and asks what kind of man would allow the love of his life to be attacks inches from him, and the video shows he is a coward. Jericho then says Cole got outsmarted and there are five of t5hem and two of him.

Cole says he’s right, but he called someone who lives in Vegas who is Homicidal.

Suicidal.

Genocidal.

And it’s Sabu!

Taz says he knows that guy.

Sabu comes to the ring, drinks in the cheers then starts tossing chairs, nailing Matt Menard, who kind of deserves it.

We then get a video to hype the match between Jamie Hayter and Toni Storm.

Roderick Storm vs Daniel Garcia

I like thai idea, making it so the confrontation at the contract signing leads to an actual match on the show. They start with mat work and then into chops after Taz reminds us of how brutal Strong’s chops are. When they come back from the picture in picture, Garcia is in control and does his mocking dance when he gets a chance which wakes up the crowd to boo him.

The intensity of the first part of the match has faded as we go on, as it turns into more of a standard Garcia match. Strong wins by dropping Garcia across his knees for the pin and the win.

Winner: Roderick Strong

We get a video of Willow Nightingale winning the NJPW Strong women's championship.

It’s time for the Main Event:

The Lucha Brothers (Ring of Honor Tag Team Champions) vs Cluadio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta

Bryan Danielson joins commentary. Both teams throw hands as the bell rings. The Lucha Bros get in two dives before we hit the one minute mark. As I watch the Lucha Bros do their stuff, it’s been a while since they’ve been on Dynamite in a tag team match, and they move at a breakneck speed.  Claudio and Yuta keep up with them and it reminds me of the fast paced stuff of the early year or two of AEW.

As we come back to full screen, Yuta is the one bouncing around the ring for the Lucha Bros, and poor Excalibur can’t even tell us when Rampage is airing this weekend due to the playoffs. Bryan has a great time on commentary as he puts over hsi team, talks about their training, and when Yuta kicks out after a pile driver he explains that they work their neck to take moves like that.

As we get to the end of the match the Young Bucks come from under the ring and stop Claudio from breaking up the pin so Fexnix gets the pin and the win.

Winners and still Ring on Honor Tag Team Champions: The Lucha Brothers

Jon Moxley runs out, grabs a mic and says the Bucks should enjoy tonight because they are going to get plastered on the pavement. The Bucks are in the crowd motioning for them to bring it on.
