Do you get a tickle in the base of your belly when someone talks about an upcoming flight or road trip? Do your fingers start to tap at phantom keys, searching for deals on plane tickets and accommodation? If any of this applies to you, you might have the travel bug. Regardless of how many places you've visited in the past, whether that's one country or 30, you probably still have a bucket list a mile long of destinations you want to see. If that describes your life, keep reading to discover five more nature destinations that will take your breath away.
1. Geirangerfjord, Norway
Scandinavia is famous for its natural wonders, especially fjords, and one that sticks out is the Unesco World Heritage site of Geirangerfjord in Norway. If you're wondering what a fjord is, it's a geographical phenomenon caused by glacial retreat over a long period of time, usually occurring in prehistoric times. Fjords are deep and narrow bodies of seawater surrounded by steep cliffs.
This particular fjord, Geirangerfjord, is well-known for breathtaking waterfalls and mesmerizing abandoned farms that you can spot along cliff sides. Seven-night Norway cruises are a popular choice for travelers when it comes to getting up close and personal with nature in Geirangerfjord.
2. Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
No nature lover's bucket list would be complete without the Galápagos islands of Ecuador. These islands are famous for their incredibly unique wildlife, and a visit to this destination is also a history lesson. You can learn about how the islands inspired Charles Darwin to expand his ideas of how species evolve, something that forms the foundation of biological studies to this day.
When you plan your visit to the Galápagos islands, make sure you're ready for a lot of swimming. If you're afraid of the water or not a confident swimmer, you may want to sit this one out.
3. The Annapurna Mountains, Nepal
If you are seeking an experience that will leave you in slack-jawed wonder, you have to trek in the Annapurna mountains of Nepal. While Nepal is also home to Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, the Annapurnas offer a much more holistic travel experience and one that you might find much more accessible.
You can see the Annapurna range from Pokhara, a tourist-friendly town in central Nepal. If you don't feel like hiking, Pokhara is the perfect place to contemplate the snow-capped peaks from a lakeside bungalow with a drink in hand. However, if you are feeling adventurous, you can get a permit to trek up into the mountains to Annapurna Base Camp, which sits at 13,546ft above sea level.
4. The Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Another once-in-a-lifetime trip that you should consider is a visit to the Great Barrier Reef in northern Australia. This is another destination that will thrill you if you love aquatic adventures. From Cairns in Queensland, you can choose a variety of different ways to explore the various reef shelves off the coast. You'll see some of the most stunning reef formations and sea life in the world, and you can also use your time to explore the Daintree rainforest, one of the oldest rainforests on the planet.
5. Halong Bay, Vietnam
If you want to feel like you're in the middle of a fantasy movie set, you can travel to Halong Bay in Vietnam. A seascape full of thousands of limestone karsts that jut out of the water like the spines of an enormous dragon, Halong Bay is a nature lover's dream. The area has received recognition from Unesco for being a reposit of the earth's geographic history, and the best way to see it is on a boat, of course.
If you don't have a passport yet, what are you waiting for? The world is full of wonders, and all you have to do is book a flight, leave home, and go discover what's out there.
