With the news of the Writer's Guild of America going on strike, I'm curious if we do see some additional wrestling content, either in-ring on outside of the ring make its way onto television if this strike happens for a while. Do you have any thoughts on that?
It's within the realm of possibility. If the strike lasts for any period of time, eventually networks will need content and pro wrestling is relatively quick and easy and cheap to produce if needed. I don't think we are there yet but most Fall series begin stocking writing rooms by June/July the latest, so if that process cannot begin, it's possible WWE, AEW, etc. come in to help, but we will see if that actually happens.
Regarding the infamous "WWF-signed Tazz being booked to win the ECW world title from WCW-bound Mike Awesome" rigmarole in 2000: why didn't Paul Heyman just book one of his ECW guys to take the belt from Awesome? As much as it makes for a curious piece of wrestling trivia, it seemed so unnecessary to get Vince involved in the whole thing.
Heyman booked Tazz to do it for several reasons. One, to get more attention. Two, the idea of switching the belt to Tazz then Tommy Dreamer then Justin Credible pushed Awesome well into the past. Three, it allowed Tazz to come back and have sort of a "happy ending" as someone who came to assist ECW, which meant a lot to him, as a big surprise NO ONE saw coming.
I finally got around to watching the "You Can't Kill David Arquette" documentary and I really enjoyed it. Regarding his latter day run as an indie wrestler, do you believe that he "redeemed" himself in the eyes of the wrestling community and fans after having been booked to win the WCW world title decades earlier? He really pushed himself to learn the ropes and you could sense how much he's always loved the business.
I don't think Arquette ever really needed to be redeemed as the problem was never him, but the atrocious WCW booking at the time. I think anyone who interacting with David during his run on the independents saw someone who worked REALLY hard even though he didn't need to and someone who truly LOVED pro wrestling and was happy to be there. If he felt he needed to truly be redeemed, he accomplished his goal and in my mind, should always be embraced in the business.
Based on the presale registration numbers, do you think AEW has a fighting chance to sell out Wembley Stadium, or at least come very close to it?
I think they will do whatever they want to set the capacity at. They've already made history and anyone who tries to split that hair are just being idiots at this point.
What's the greatest wrestling match of all time?
The match you saw as a kid that you loved the most. It all depends on what you saw.
