NJPW WRESTLING DONTAKU 2023 PREVIEW THOUGHTS

By James Kurokawa on 2023-05-02 09:30:00

Quick Preview of the top matches for Wrestling Dontaku 2023 on May 3, 2023.

1.  New Japan Strong Championship:  KENTA vs. Hikuleo

KENTA should win.  Hikuleo is not ready to hold a singles title yet.

2.  New Japan World Television Championship:  Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Jeff Cobb

ZSJ should win this match.  I see Zack winning with a Euro Clutch after avoiding Cobb’s power moves and out wrestling him.

3.  NEVER Openweight 6-man Championship:  Ren Narita, El Desperado and Minoru Suzuki vs. Tomohiro Ishii, Kazuchika Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi

Strong Style should retain the belts.  Okada, Ishii and Tanahashi do not need the titles.   If Ren loses the title, it could hurt him.  New Japan should be building anticipation for a singles match between Okada and Narita in the G1 Climax

4.  NEVER Openweight Championship:  Tama Tonga vs. David Finlay

Finlay needs to win the Title.  Bullet Club is no longer a force and their roster is so thin.   To keep Bullet Club strong, Finlay needs to be seen as a leader and beat Tama Tonga.

5.  IWGP World Heavyweight Championship:  SANADA vs. Hiromu Takahashi

SANADA should retain.  He cannot lose to a Junior, nor should he lose in his first defense.   It should be a good match since both have been in Los Ingobernales de Japon.    It will be interesting to see which heavyweight will be next in line for a title shot, which could be Tetsuya Naito or Shingo Takagi.   The obvious long term plan would be Okada winning the G1 Climax and challenging SANADA at Wrestle Kingdom.   However, hopefully New Japan will not be that transparent.
