TMZ.com is reporting that Jerry Springer, the former Mayor of Cincinnati who rose to prominence the 1990s as the host of the over the top, edgy Jerry Springer Show has passed away at 79 years old after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Springer's series was a big inspiration to then-WWF writers Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara, who would use the envelope pushing talk show, which initially featured lots of physical fighting before that was toned down, to help them curate ideas for the WWF Monday Night Raw series as the company headed into the Attitude Era. Other than the original ECW, The Springer series was likely the most influential inspiration for that period of time of WWF programming.
The series, which was mostly worked, featured appearances from a number of personalities from professional wrestling, including The Iron Sheik, Scott Hall, Justin Roberts and more. Jamie Dundee for a time worked booking talent for the series, which opened the doors for a number of those who worked in and around pro wrestling to appear, either as themselves or as characters on the show.
Springer made a number of WWE related appearances over the years, including guest hosting an episode of Monday Night Raw in 2010 before hosting a WWE Network series Jerry Springer Presents WWE Too Hot For TV.
Springer's most recent series Judge Jerry had him presiding over civil legal issues as a Judge, including a case involving professional wrestlers from the New York Wrestling Connection:
